MYMMS Analysis

MYMS (MY Maybe Meaningless Statistics) I thought I would throw this up to have little fun during the long break, at least we got the Phillies to keep our wives/girlfriends from forcing us to watch a full week of mind numbing reality shows. Another Tuesday night with two hours of The Biggest Loser and I am going to jump off my roof. Without the currently voted 11th and 19th most valuable players, JVR and Blair Betts, the Flyers are 0-1-1 and while they remain a perfect 3-0 with them. Can a 20 year old rookie and a late tryout signee be this critical to the on ice success of our team and if so is there anything that can be done to fix that?

Without JVR, a viable offensive threat to pair with Giroux on the 3rd line Stevens has elected to moved Giroux up a go with a two scoring system that was much debated on the BSH this off-season. While that means more ice time for Claude, with better talent, it also means less scoring depth and more ice time for the Asham and Powes of the world without a puck carrying play making center to help out in the offensive zone.. So far this has NOT worked out evidenced by the 0-1-1 in the last two games and might prove be more problematic with Stevens getting the last change on the road.

Without Betts we are seeing more PK time once again for Carter and Richards is it effecting their play 5 on 5 I am not sure but once again looking at the 0-1-1 record maybe it is? The 4th line of Carcillo-Betts-Lappy looked great in the 1st 3 games and was getting quite a bit of ice time, Betts was averaging 13.03 min/game, providing more rest and energy for the scoring lines. With Betts out Cote is in. If you can call 2.02 min per game in? This has meant even more wasted minutes for Carter and Richards as they were rotating in and out on the 4th line playing on jumbled mismatched lines with "offensively challenged" wingers (I think "offensively challenged" that is more PC than "muckers and grinders"). Also in the Carolina and Devils games I believe Betts was on the ice to help close out both of those games, taking crucial draws and providing a veteran defensive presence on the ice. If Betts was available maybe he gets out to Getzlaf and prevents that keep in and Flyers don't end up losing to the Ducks

I know the above arguments are highly speculative and it is has only been two games both that is how the MYMMS system works, if you have problems with the MYMMS system feel free to include in your comments. Let's Go Phils.

I think you’re right, but two games is an even smaller sample size than 5 games. I tried hitting on the absence of Betts in my piece – and I plan on doing another, hopefully tonight – and I think you definitely have a point. Betts averaged 4 defensive zone draws a game through three, while Richards has averaged 5 per game through five. I’d like to find out how many Richie took in the two games Betts was gone, but I’m not sure if I can. Either way, I don’t think it’s hard to imagine Richards would be at least down to 4 per game if Betts didn’t get hurt.

Also, as a few people have said, why even have Cote waste a spot on the roster if he’s getting 2 minutes of ice time per game? You obviously aren’t rolling four lines out. This is where I’d like to see either Nodl or Kalinski called up. Nodl could play on the third line with Giroux (moving Pyorala back up to the first line) or Kalinski could play on the fourth line since he’s a more responsible defensive forward. If Cote isn’t going to play or fight, why have him?

Addendum: Kalinski was third on the Phantoms in plus/minus last year at + 11. He was behind only Jared Ross (+ 17, 69 points) and Nate Guenin (+14, 14 points) Considering that Kalinski only had 17 points, I think it’s safe to say he’s better defensively than Ross. But again, there’s not a lot of data to look at to prove that.

I agree – I would much rather see Kalinski on the roster over Cote. I don’t see the point of having a player that is only going to get 2 or 3 minutes in a game… Call up Kalinski and you can give him, Lappy and Carcillo 8 to 10 minutes of 5 on 5 – and let Lappy and Powe be your 1st PK unit…
Most importantly — take Gagne off the PK… His groin seems like it will bother him all season, and with all the players that can do well on the PK, there is no reason to expose Gags to those tough minutes. He is far more valuable to us in an offensive capacity.

I on board with that Cote out, pretty much anyone in I am not a big fan of Ross as I feel he is just to small for a defensive role at the NHL level, 5ft 9in 175lbs is not going to get it done on the 3rd or 4th lines. Nodl should be the one to move up. I think/hope JVR will be back in the lineup on Friday so we don’t have to worry about what to do for for now, as Asham or Powe will take Betts spot on the 4th line. Another roster concern that I have is that Pyorala hasn’t stood out on the Richards Gagne line I wonder if at some point we could make a move to pickup a better fit for that line, moving Pyorala down to where I think he belongs with JVR and Giroux. I really wish Knuble would have taken the incentive based contract, our team would be much better prepared to handle a missing top 9 forward if we still had him.

Pyorala was going to be a focus of my next “emerging trends” post. I agree he hasn’t stood out, but that doesn’t mean he’s been ineffective. 1) He’s helping out defensively; and 2) the same argument for Gagne (minus the injury) can be made for Pyorala: With Richards scoring so much, how much weight do you put on Pyorala’s 0 goals?

As for when JVR comes back, I’d think Powe splits time with Asham on the third line.
