Friday Morning Fly By: Flyers return while Habs lose 7-on-5

Boring weeks mean there aren't a lot of pictures to choose from. Looking back into the archives is never a bad idea in these cases.

Boring weeks mean there aren't a lot of pictures to choose from. Looking back into the archives is never a bad idea in these cases.

Your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news...

  • Last night's NHL scores: Capitals 4, Sharks 1Avalanche 3, Canadiens 2Wings 5, Kings 2 - Senators 7, Lightning 1 - Blackhawks 3, Predators 1 - Coyotes 3, Blues 2 OT
  • The Flyers are back tonight. NHL scheduling has them playing for the first time since Saturday, and after tonight they're off until next Thursday. How's that happen in an Olympic year when the schedule is supposed to be condensed? We're not alone, at least. Atlanta is in the same boat. [Twitter]
  • Gotta raise the question, here. Which league is worse at scheduling, the NHL or MLB? Playoff games ending at 2:15 AM without extra innings or two games in 12 days?
  • Regardless, the Flyers are looking forward to ending this current layoff. [CSN Philly]
  • Also in the Panaccio article, JVR will return and play with Arron Asham and Mika Pyorala.
  • In case you don't scroll down, you might miss this. Reader DragonGirl0583 uploaded a video of the supposed "dirty" hit by Danny Briere. As you will see, James Wisniewski is a joke. [BSH Comments]
  • You've heard of six-on-five hockey; you pull the goalie, it's not a hard concept. But um, seven-on-five hockey? To close the game? For twenty seconds? There's video if you don't believe it. [NHL FanHouse]
  • Islander fans have been nervous over the past 36 hours or so, as it looked like owner Charles Wang had finally pulled out of the proposed Lighthouse Project that would cement the teams' future on Long Island. Wang says the project is still on the table, though. [Newsday]
  • Another round of jersey fouls! [Puck Daddy]
  • A Q&A session with former Flyer favorite Scottie Upshall. [FanHouse]
  • We now know what the Vancouver 2010 medals look like. Jury still out? [LA Times]
  • Old story, but I couldn't find it last week when the whole Hartnell "biting" incident went down. This ran on this Pittsburgh newspaper blog back in March, and it shows how cool a guy Hartnell really is. [Empty Netters]
  • Phils take game one in LA! [Phillies Nation] - [The Good Phight] - [The Fightin's]

Not sure how the JVR, Pyro, Asham line will look something to look forward too. I like the idea of Giroux up on the (RW) wing his natural position, I am concerned over Pyro taking draws but playing him with less talent maybe he will look to handle and shoot the puck more instead of always looking for Gagne and Richards.

Will there be any changes to the PP? I would like to see Richards, Kimmo on the point with JVR, Gagne and Giroux up front Coburn does nothing for me on the PP. Let Carle and Pronger play with the Carter, Hartnell Briere trio. PP has been good so if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. both JVR and Giroux should both be getting PP time the only way to do that is move Richards to point.

I’m glad you guys were amused by the clip of the Briere “hit” :) Made the work I did to find it worth the effort. Luckily, Wisniewski had been credited with that hit on Carter at exactly 10:11, or I would never have figured it out!

That 7-on-5 clip is an absolute joke. NHL refs do things all the time that make me want to scream, but how hard is it to see 4 guys all right in front of the net and 3 more out at the edge of the faceoff circle? Their jersey’s are bright red, it’s not that hard to notice them! (If you pause it right around the 10 second mark, it’s really easy to see all 7 guys in one frame)

Oh and on the Jersey Fouls page, I’m a math major, so the Pi jersey made me smile, whether it’s a foul or not.
