New lines for Boston
At practice there was a new line combo out there getting ready for the Bruins. Stevens mentioned he is trying to cut down on all the fancy passing and crash the net more which is a good thing.
Hartnell-Carter-Briere as usual
Gagne-Richards-Asham
Lappy-Giroux-JVR
Powe-Pyorala-Carcillo
My initial thought is replacing Knuble with Gags and Richie is going to be the theme of this season. Good luck Asham you got some big shoes to fill, but it is worth a shot.

I wonder how much ice time Asham will be getting then.

If they switched Pyorala with Asham and had Powe center the 4th line, then I would be happy. I don’t know what it is but I just don’t like Asham playing with our best players. I didn’t really like it when he played with Briere and Giroux last year, and I don’t really like this.

Asham can score
If he’s set up nicely enough, he can bang ’em in. He scored 15 goals one year when he was on the Islanders or Canadiens.
No one would mess with any of those lines because they all have someone (Hartnell, Asham, Lappy, Carcillo) who can punch you out.
Should be interesting to see how this works.

Giroux and JVR on the same line? Not sure if I like that.

Giroux’s the playmaker and JVR’s got the shot. Lappy’s there to be Lappy. Honestly, this is what I expected the third line would be when they said JVR made the team and they wanted Giroux to be a center.

It’s what I expected too, with Lappy and Powe switching back and forth depending on how well the pair is working.

Healthy scratch to first line is quite the upgrade for Asham. I love the guy so I gotta say I like this move.

I wish I had your enthusiasm for this move. I understand it, but I’m not sure I like it. Scoring 15 goals ONE time in his career doesn’t mean he’s going to turn into the next Knuble. I like the guy too, he’s good at what he does, and it was a nice goal he got the other day. But I’ll have to see it work to be convinced.

However, in very similar fashion, Knuble was a 4th liner for many years with the Wings, Rags and Bruins before the Bruins gave him a shot to fill in for an injury (Sergei Samsonov, I think) on their top line with Joe Thornton, and he turned into one of the best power forwards in the NHL.
Who knows, maybe this will be the season that Asham breaks out into a bona fide top-six winger? He has shown flashes of talent with the puck, and he’s as hard nosed as anyone… I am excited for him.

I feel like that is kinda wishful thinking for Asham. Again, I’d love to be proven wrong but I just don’t see it happening.

Never thought of it that way
For comparison’s sake, here are Knuble’s stats. Here are Asham’s.
Now then. Knuble is 6 years older than Asham. Noobs broke out at the tender age of 30, when he scored 30 goals. Prior to that, his best season saw him net 15 goals. Since his breakout year, Noobs has never scored less than 21 goals and has averaged 27-8 goals a season.
Asham can actually skate pretty well and, unlike Cote, has some hockey skill. If he is paired with skilled players he could probably score some goals. 20 would certainly be a stretch, but it wouldn’t be entirely out of the question. Perhaps Arron can regain the form he had as a member of the 1997-98 Red Deer Rebels, when he scored 43 goals and 49 assists for 92 points. 16 of his goals were on the power play and 2 were shorties.
A man can dream, can’t he? No way in hell would that happen, but it would be at once awesome and hilarious if it did.
Someone go find Mike Missanelli and have him proclaim that Asham will never score 20 goals. That worked for Trent Klatt.

The Florida game showed they need to get someone into the paint to score the dirty goals. Asham has all the physical tools of Knuble he might even be more physical on the forecheck and a better skater. Doing Knuble’s job seems so easy from an outsiders perspective if you have the size and strength but that is clearly not the case or everyone would be scoring 30 goals a year. Asham being only 5ft 11in is smaller than Knuble 6ft 3in stature but despite his shorter height Aaron is playing at a nice weight of 205 lbs, Knuble is listed at 223 lbs. Leclair was also 6ft 3in and played at 235 lbs. Asham is build more like a fireplug hopefully the lower center of gravity helps him out but I like to see power forwards modeled after Tim Kerr 6ft 3in over 220 lbs but Thomas Holmstrom the best in the paint player since LeClair is very successful at a modest 6ft 190lbs.
Something to look at it in the next couple of games. It is really hard to predict how this will work time will tell hopefully Asham has the knack for the puck in front of the net and the coaching staff lets this line run together for awhile it will probably take 10 games to get going. Powe should get shipped down when Betts comes back and Pyorala moved up to Giroux line if Asham works out.

Is the Richards line still the 1st line I think the Carter line has surpassed them. The RIchards line has been going up against the opponents top line and the Carter line has just been rolling out there forcing the opposition to match up on them hard to say but I would consider the Richards line as our second line for now.

not usre it matters
the fact that we have both lines should be forcing teams to try and cover both, creating favorable matchups for one or the other. If these lines are played, there is also a chance that the 3rd line will get some goals as well causing more trouble for most teams trying to contain the offense.
If of course they play an aggressive game. It also may help to have a better offensive scheme. I hate seeing 2 guys behind the net so often and nobody out front. I’m hoping htese moves change that.

Maybe I’ll call his new show on ESPN radio (950 AM) and tell him. One can only hope.
John LeClair was brought over and went from 4th line goon to a multiyear 50 goal scorer too, so stranger things have happened. I hope his hard nosed style opens up some room for his linemates. I’m hopeful, sure. But I have to take a wait and see attitude here. Thankfully it’s only one more day.
