BSH: "You've had five wins and five losses through the first ten games of the season. Any big picture things you need to change going forward?"
Mike Richards: "No. We're playing well, the effort's there. We're minimizing mistakes. It almost seems like every time we're making a mistake right now, it's ending up in our net.
"I think execution is a big thing for us right now. Putting pucks on their net, and trying to bear down on their net. That's it."

It almost seems like every time we’re making a mistake right now, it’s ending up in our net.
Are you sure that wasn’t Cole Hamels?
Fuck you Mike. It’s time to take his C and put it on Pronger’s chest.
Mario you’re an idiot. We’re 10 games into the season. They’re gonna go through up and downs. Just looking at this team you should know they’ll go through a hot streak that’ll put them where they need to be. Don’t trash the team after such a ridiculously small sample size.
I could find you half a dozen post-game quotes from last season about how “we’re playing well and doing what we should and it’s just not clicking”.
It’s why Pronger was brought in here, because that attitude is not acceptable. Richards still hasn’t learned that? Take the C off his chest.
Yup. This is still the same old “lazy” Flyer squad I’ve seen for a few years now. I’m not sure if it’s Richards or Stevens or where it starts, but definitely they need a shakeup. You can’t be happy with mediocrity (which is exactly what this Flyer team is right now).
Of course, goaltending is still an issue to me. Yes, Emery has made some fine saves, but he has still given up the same old backbreaking goals that has killed this team and it’s momentum for years.
There are still a decent amount of fresh faces on the squad, so maybe they need some time to gel, but poor play in Oct/Nov could spell the difference between home ice and playing on the road come April.
Also, it’s been said before, but Timo and Coburn are awful together. JS needs to break them up. Put Carle with Timo and Coburn with Pronger and see if that works.

you might disagree with him, but he’s certainly not an idiot for voicing his opinion and its really unnecessary to do so. he didn’t trash you or the team and he definitely isn’t the only one questioning the leaders of this team and it has nothing to do with being 10 games into the season. you may not like or agree with what Mario says, but he defends his opinions and he deserves respect for that.
i think richards is a good player, but i seriously question his captaincy. he doesn’t appear to hold the team together, in fact, they seem to break down quite easily. i look at those critical games like the final game of last season when they lost home ice advantage for the playoffs and last year’s elimination breakdown vs. the penguins. i look at his shut down with the media when he should be defending his team and players, just like he’d do on the ice.
Disagree
You can’t come out in the media and rip on anyone. What Richards said is what they all say, they always have to be politically correct. I would think behind closed dorrs these words don’t get spoken. They need to find a new leader in the way of a coach. Sorry John, you do not cut the mustard. I was hoping they would have gone after Andy Murray when he was available. Right now I say bring in Ted Nolan. That guy would get the most out of these players gauranteed.

I don’t think putting pucks on their net is necessarily a problem right now.

public relations has watered down player/media interaction so badly. rarely do you see players break from that mold and really give some personality with thoughtful answers. ‘we need to hustle, not turn over pucks in our defensive zone…’ come on, when should you ever not hustle? when should you ever turn over pucks in your defensive zone? what they are saying usually means so little its almost pointless to read. it takes some really inventive and effective questioning to break through the facade.
BSH: “You’ve had five wins and five losses through the first ten games of the season. Any big picture things you need to change going forward?”
Mike Richards: "No. We’re playing well, the effort’s there.
Same attitude as last year…expect the same result: Playoff exit in the first round, most likely against the first place Pens, and Stevens sticks around for another full season of mediocrity. Welcome to the Flyers fandom under Johnny S. I like Richards as a player but this guy really needs that C yanked off his chest and a swift kick in his but if he thinks they’re playing well and the effort’s there.
Question for all those saying Richards shouldn’t wear the ‘C’ because of his recent answers: What would your preferred Captain have said to “any big picture things you need to change?” Yes? A new coach? A new system? New players?
I’m not slamming Ben for his question, because I know he only got one question in, but like beatniche said, this is how NHL players answer questions. We may not like the answer, but what’s to say the answer is truthful? He can’t sit there and slam his coach or his teammates. Again, this loss wasn’t nearly as bad as the loss in Florida or the last one against San Jose. It’s frustrating, but they did put 43 shots on net, they killed off a 5-on-3 power play, they scored two power play goals, and the game winning goal went in off a deflection. Something needs to change, but a Captain is going to keep his complaints in the locker room.

That would be one of my questions, not that we’d ever get a straight answer. Does Richie have the same calm, borderline shy demeanor in the locker room as he does in front of the media?
For some reason, I doubt it, pointing to some of those mic’d up segments where he seems like a completely different person on the ice.

“I think we need to be better. I can’t tell you right now if that means we need to change something in the big picture, or a little picture, or what we need to change. But we’re gonna figure it out and fix what’s not working.”
That’s pretty easy, isn’t it?
Well, that’s a good answer, but it’s certainly a politician’s answer. You’re deftly rejecting the premise – much like politicians and lawyers are so good at – which Richards clearly didn’t do. I’m not sure you can expect an athlete to think like that, although your answer would be preferable.

I’m confused. Are you saying he didn’t spout a nonsense answer? That he really believes they are playing well?
I’m saying he didn’t reject the premise. He answer the question he was asked (“No.”), rather than pivoting like you just said.

I don’t see how he could truthfully answer that question “yes”. I mean, they don’t come off the ice and have Stevens announce “tomorrow morning we’re installing a new system.” Thats something Richards wouldn’t learn until today.
That was my point. He couldn’t say yes.

i don’t particularly feel he shouldn’t be captain solely based on his recent comments, but i’ll address the question considering i was critical of him as captain.
i’m aware there is limited time for response, so what i hope to hear and what is possible to get out are likely two different things. i’d like to hear him give an answer that elaborates on what ‘execution’ means, because i’ve seen a lot of shots, i’ve seen a lot of pressure, i haven’t seen a lot of consistency. i accept canned responses are part of media relations, and his answer seems like one to me. it isn’t particularly what i look for in personalities i respect in sports, but its something i accept.
i like to look at results to measure leadership. of course its subjective, but this defines my own opinion. obviously i hold the team in high regard or i wouldn’t be dismayed at their lack of success and searching for potential answers. there are leaders in different ways, and from what i have seen from richards is a strong, mostly quiet, leader who does so by example, at least in public and that’s all i’ve got to go by. from my viewpoint, the flyers look like a team lacking strong leadership. maybe richards leadership style isn’t working, maybe the alternate captains and veterans need to step up more, maybe its the coaching, or maybe leadership has nothing to do with it.
i am beginning to question the decision to make richards a captain when they did. the nhl and media surrounding it is serious business. leading a group of players is as well. veterans have the advantage of dealing with a lot of different players, the media, and developing a working leadership style through experience. richards didn’t have that advantage and learning to lead on the job can be extremely risky. failures cause leadership to be questioned and can create a downward spiral in the locker room and in the media.
i don’t want him to lose his captaincy. i want to see positive results and improvement. i see a better roster than last year but no real indications of significant improvement. i want, when people ask what is up for the future, someone to not tell me they need to execute better, because at this point i think that’s a pretty safe assumption.
i don’t want to make it seem like ben’s question was bad either, its a fair enough question and one i’d really like a serious answer to. at the same time, if he’s just going to vomit a PR answer, it makes the process seem pointless. i respect the time you 3 put in and your efforts in the site and the fact that you’ve gotten any questions answered by any flyers, let alone the captain, is awesome. i think that your questions deserve respectful, thoughtful answers.
if he’s just going to vomit a PR answer, it makes the process seem pointless
I read it the entirely opposite way.
Media is bullshit. Still, he’s got a handful of PR answers to choose from. I posted one above that would’ve shown some growth, maturity, and leadership. Instead, he continues to claim/believe that the players aren’t doing anything wrong, and he has no idea why they’re losing. When he understands it’s because they are playing like shit, then maybe they can move forward.
They are not playing like shit. They outshot and won most battles against one of the best teams in the east. Saying they need to blow things up because of this effort is ridiculously short sighted.
You’re not gonna win every game. Losses aren’t apocalyptic.

the end is nigh!
i sort of hate posting about this topic in this thread because i don’t want it to seem all that reactionary. they certainly aren’t embarrassing themselves, I think the Leafs have that market cornered. i don’t think they are playing anywhere near their potential yet though. they had a bad start last season and in the grand scheme of things faired pretty well despite injuries.
5-4-1 is under expectations, but its over .500 and its foolish to think he should be tearing into players and blowing up the team in the media.
i’m curious if you believe there are any overarching problems other than actual play level? i mean, certainly something like ‘execution’ is an issue, whatever that’s referring to, but do you think there is a greater issue or do you think its simply the result of on ice performance alone?
