Scott Hartnell will not be fined nor [sic] suspended for allegedly biting the Penguins' Kris Letang.

Flyers official Twitter account

Good news for the Flyers. Have to figure the lack of video evidence was the fatal hole in determining whether or not to suspend or fine him.

i still think it was made up. You could probably tell from the wound if it was a bite from hartnell or some other form of damage, and i am pretty sure if it was a bite mark then hartnell would have been fined/suspended

Rather than get into another argument over at Pensburgh, I thought I’d share this gem over here.

You hear that? Now THEY are whining about the NHL being on OUR side. The levels of humor on this line of thinking are endless.

i love how were being called goons and because were goons we get away with alot. yeah cause that makes a whole sense in todays world. Even though they win last night, they still find something to cry about

I think they may have a point. I mean, what’s the league ever done for them?

…Oh right.

I’ll try this a third time: this is a poor attempt at sarcasm. I’ll leave it at that.

I wanted to remind them of Talbot spearing Chris Osgood in the playoffs, immediately followed by Malkin swinging a stick at Zetterberg’s head. But, thought the responses would be funnier over here.

dont forget about the malkin picking a fight incident and didnt have his jersey tied down and should have gotten suspended for it according to the rules

Come on, you know rationale doesn’t work on people who believe in conspiracies. Don’t confuse them with facts.

Even their announcers believe they never stoop to “bullying” tactics in order to win games, when we all saw for ourselves last year against the Red Wings (and others) that is it clearly not the case.

Do you really think the NHL would be on the Flyers’ side here? I don’t believe in conspiracies that their “out to get us” but you can’t seriously think the league would protect the Flyers, considering their history.

I have to think there wasn’t overwhelming evidence or there’s more to this whole story than we all are privy to, and so therefore there will be no suspensions.

I’m sure there will be retribution from the Pens, however, when we next meet. AAMOF, I think the league is banking on it (and hoping for it). It’ll make for good ratings.

by doubleh on Oct 9, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even last night I didn’t think there was any evidence to lead to this being true OR false. Someone on my site claimed they don’t need evidence if Letang had bite marks on his hand. That would be evidence in and of itself I figured, but whatever. The league isn’t on either team’s side. I don’t think they’re protecting anyone in this matter, be it the Flyers or Penguins. I just grow tired of false accusations from this site or my own because all it does it lead to more tin-foil hat assumptions.

I will honestly say that I don’t think Letang made it up. I mean, it sounds kinda ridiculous to think a guy would just walk out of a heap of players and say “someone bit my hand,” and try to get away with it. Did he fish hook Hartnell? Probably. Did Hartnell accidentally bite down when a finger was in his mouth? Probably. But none of that matters right now. The ruling isn’t in favor of Philly or against Pittsburgh. It’s just a ruling. Plain and simple. I know many of you will disagree with me on this but the league doesn’t see it as Philly vs Pittsburgh. They see “Team X vs. Team Y.”

Pens/Flyers always draw huge ratings either way so I don’t think that was a factor in any of this.

actually you make sense, i think people will agree with you. i still dont think there was any biting and if there was wouldnt there be some pictures of the wound of maybe hartnell with some blood and skin in his mouth? either was this gonna make for a hell of a game in december

by phish'n on Oct 9, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I grow tired of it, too. Too many fans on both sides think the other team is favored. And the media doesn’t help to quell these notions on either side of the state.

Very well said Frank. I for one am certainly glad that the accusations of the NHL favoring the Pens have largely disappeared – from this site at least. You can’t rationalize with those people!

No, Frank, for most part I do agree with what you are saying. I think when Letang tried to facewash Hartnell his fingers where near Hart’s mouth and it really doesn’t surprise me to think that Hartnell would have bit down. The man has done some rediclous things on the ice, there is no doubt about that (Read: Glove throwing).

I think comments from both sides are always going anger the other. For us Flyers fans, it gets old when “goon hockey” is thrown around like no other team ever does anything wrong, especially when it comes from Penguins fans. This is hockey, it is a rough game and players take cheap shot all the time. And, I am sure the “rigged draft lottery” gets pretty old for you.

*Just a general comment here: Can I further point out how bad the Penguins TV commentators are? I am sure this is another thing that you are tired of hearing about, Frank, but they truly have no sense of professionalism. Despite the fact that you commentate for a specific team, I think that is fair to say, you are not supposed to commentate the game like you are with your buddy watching the game from a barstool in a pub. You’d think they’d have to have some form of professionalism. I don’t mind a little bit of homerism, but they are the epitome of what a bad commentator is, imo. I wouldn’t ask them to take the other team’s side but you’d think they might at least try to commentate with just a bit of regard that there are actually two teams out on the ice. Sorry for the rant, but I was just watching the clip that Frank posted of the final scrum. Those guys never cease to amaze me . . . Sorry if this detracts from the topic actually being discussed haha.

I don’t think it distracts from the convo one bit.

Bob Errey sometimes acts like he’s on the ice with the Pens. Even to Pens fans he sometimes makes comments that leave you rolling your eyes. To me it sounds like he’s literally in love with the team. His comments are rarely unbiased and he even delivers his commentary like he’s nudging an elbow into the ribs of every listener. It’s annoying.

Paul Steigerwald, the more flat-toned announcer in that clip, will give credit where credit is due. If the other team makes a nice move to beat Fleury he’ll say it. If Crosby or Malkin take a stupid penalty, he’ll say it’s stupid. But he also has a tendency to lean in favor of the Pens in a lot of things and last night that was really evident. For what it’s worth I got pretty annoyed listening to them too.

Yea and I think most of the time Pen’s fans will agree and say both those guys are pretty ridiculous. Its just that no matter how many times I am stuck listening to their commentary I am surprised at how biased they are…staggering, really. I just wouldn’t want my team’s commentators to be so mesmerized by the team that they don’t admit wrong doing and don’t praise the opposition. If I wanted the guy’s opinion sitting three stools down from me at the bar I’d ask him.

But that’s life. You can’t doubt their passion for the Penguins and I guess that much is praiseworthy, right? * eye roll * haha

Just out of curiosity, from a perspective of a Penguins fan, do you think Richards hit Fleury at the end of the game on purpose or it was an accident because Richards was crashing the net and trying to tie up the game and he just couldn’t stop?

Here’s a fun quote from Hartnell…

"(Letang) had me in a headlock, his free hand was in there, and I can’t tell you what happened but I definitely didn’t bite him. I know he was complaining like he did, but his bare hand was scratching my face and hands were everywhere. I’m a pretty honest player, I think I’ve said that all along. I play the game hard; I play the game the right way. You don’t want to take liberties with anyone in fights or hits, or anything. I think if you ask guys in our dressing room here they’ll say the same thing, and guys around the league. I like to chirp a little bit and get in the mix a little bit after the whistles, but that’s part of my game. That’s how I play, and that’s how I have to play to be effective."

I love Hartnell. He is so entertaining. I think he is right though. He plays hard and he plays the right way. I wouldn’t call him a dirty player but he certainly likes to aggravate and get in the middle of things – he isn’t gonna make many friends around the league – but it is apart of his game.

But lets me honest, would anyone be surprised to hear that Hartnell did bite Letang? I know I wasn’t. I think Letang was a super drama queen about it, skating off to draw attention like he was dying or something but his hands and fingers were all over Hartnell’s face and I really wouldn’t be surprised if Hartnell just bit down. Simple as that.

Yupp, Hartnell is pretty ridiculous and I love him even more for it . . .
