Jobing.com Arena - 8:00 PM ET - Phoenix, AZ

This is the open game thread.
Behind Enemy Lines: Five For Howling
After a disappointing result last night, the Flyers look to get back to their winning ways tonight in Phoenix. Last night's loss dropped them to 7-2 in their last nine games, still rather impressive. The Coyotes meanwhile, are 3-5-1 in their last nine, fresh off an overtime loss to St. Louis on Thursday night.
In years past, any trip out to the desert would yield plenty of talk about former Flyers. Now, only two former Flyers are currently in Phoenix - James Vandermeer and Scottie Upshall. Most people are still upset about the Upshall trade, but he only has eight points in 20 games so far. He is, however, tied with Jeff Carter at seven goals on the year. Vandermeer meanwhile, is getting the seventh most ice time per game among Phoenix blueliners. Neither appear to be integral pieces of this Coyotes team, which currently sits 7th in the Western Conference.
As Five For Howling said in their preview:
And Those Guys That Got Traded...: Yeah, everyone still remembers that Scottie Upshall got traded to the Coyotes for Daniel Carcillo and a Second Round pick. Half of the things I've seen around the net are about "Danny Coming Back!" and what not. I can honestly say I don't really care. I'm not angry, It's just not important to me. Sure, he was a fan favorite when he was here, but we traded him for a player that has done really well for us this year (Tied for the team lead in goals) and for more picks. I liked the trade when it happened and still do. I get the player loyalty, but I guess I just moved on. Probably see many a Carcillo Jersey around the Arena tonight too, hopefully in the old Coyote colors and not the black and orange.
Look for Ray Emery in net again tonight (via Panaccio) against Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov is having a great year, with a GAA of 2.09 and a S% of .920. As far as Darroll Powe goes, I haven't seen anything concrete about his injury, just that he's "Questionable." If you watch The League, no one knows what that means. If you found something that I didn't, please post it in the comments. Obviously, if he can't go, Riley Cote will be inserted into the lineup and many a shuffle will ensue.
After the jump, some Questions to Answer.
Questions to Answer:
- Five For Howling expects a good reception for Dan Carcillo tonight. Can he outplay Upshall?
- Just how many fans show up tonight? How many are wearing orange?
- How does the team rebound after giving up the most goals against all year?
- The Coyotes not only don't score a lot of goals (2.46 gpg), they also don't give up a lot (2.46 gapg). Is the Flyers' offense better than the Coyotes' defense?
Apparently, even Coyotes fans hate Chris Pronger. This might be the most interesting thing in these west coast games. Join us for the game thread, and LET'S GO FLYERS!

Forgive the unusual size of the Coyotes logo at the top: I don’t quite get even the most basic of photoshop functions.

I don’t understand the Emery start at all. Boosh loves Phoenix, it shoulda been right in his wheelhouse.

agreed with the whole Cote thing his presence on this team in pointless and under 2:35 pays
I thought the team played good in the 3rd but with that bad call they pretty much turned it off, shit happens I was confident in that we would get a least a point out of the game the way we were playing in the 1st 10 minutes of the 3rd period but I was wrong.
A win in Colorado is now a must to redeem this trip.
Really not as many Flyers fans in the stands as I had expected.

Real nice positioning there from Emery, that shoulda been a goal by Mueller.

These shots by the Flyers are wayyy off the mark here. They’ve gotta be tired.

Blair Betts leaves the ice gingerly, some sort of arm thing.

With both Betts and Powe out, the Flyers are in desperate need of a call up monosyllabic forward from the Phantoms.

Flyers really don’t have a lot of spark out there. Not shocking at all with the back-to-back and travel.

Reminds me of the ’80 Finals Game 6. Isles offside (much clearer than this), Flyers froze, no call, Islanders score easily.

The worst.
Forget about the officiating. That was bad enough, but to be honest the Coyotes deserved those breaks because they actually looked like they cared.
Forget about fatigue. I understand that the Flyers had a tough game last night and had to travel. But it would have been nice if they actually showed up tonight, which they did not.
As bad as the officiating was, the Flyers lost this game justifiably. They were horrible. I cannot remember the last time I’ve seen the team this disoriented, this disinterested, and this directionless in one game. Not to sound like Michel Therrien, but to me it looked like we had about three guys out there who cared. Richards in particular cared a little too much and tried to do too much. As a result he had an awful night.
And Riley Cote needs to go. I’m sure he’s great in the locker room and all, but if he plays for 2:03 on a night when our top faceoff guy goes out AND he’s filling in for someone who plays for considerably longer than 2 minutes a night, he is of no use to this team at all. You may as well dress Tollefsen and have him play at forward.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

Betts out at least 4 weeks with a dislocated shoulder, according to Homer. God damnit.
So the call-up has to be a center, unless Briere moves back to the pivot (which would be the worst idea ever). I can’t find AHL faceoff stats, but Matsumoto has 14 points in 16 games, and is a plus 3. Ross has 7 points in 15 games, and is a -5. Dingle and Kalinski are both plus 1, but have a combined 6 points. Bring up Matsumoto! Laperriere can take the draws if need be.

Surely.
Lappy has played center before. Powe can play there too, depending on the severity of his injury.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
But if he plays, Homer won’t even call anybody up. Just let Cote dress (not play) again.
