Did Holmgren even check the stat sheets? Or ask someone in Adirondack? From Tim McManus:

Clearly, Matsumoto has been the Phantoms best center. But that doesn’t always mean you get the opportunity.

I forgot: Ross hasn’t scored since October 18th, and Nodl has been playing on the third line.

I would rather see Matsumoto and Patrick Maroon … ESPECIALLY Maroon. He’s a giant kid with a decent scoring touch and a bit of physical play to his game. Ross and Nodl have had their chances to make the team, now give Matsumoto and Maroon their chances. Look what happened when they called up Bartulis for the first time!

A scene from a meeting between Homer and Stevens:

H: Well John, this isn’t good. Our faceoff specialist and one of our better role players are out of the lineup now.

S: We’d better call someone up. I guess we can have Nodl on the wing, if only because he played some games last year.

H: Done. What about center?

S: Good question. Matsumoto’s doing well right now, isn’t he?

H: Yeah, he is actually, but he hasn’t…
(At this point Homer’s Blackberry goes off.)

S: Someone calling?

H: No, just a calendar reminder. My wife’s birthday is coming up and I have to get something for her. She likes jewelry a lot but I don’t know where to go out here On The Road.

S: You’ve got to be able to get mall jewelry around here somewhere.

H & S (singing together): It can only be JA-RED!!!!

S: As in, Ross?

H: Ooh, good call. Speaking of which, let me get on the horn to Adirondack. I’ll have Ross and Nodl meet us in Denver.

S: Word to Larry Bird.

(Exeunt.)

My first thought was to look at cap numbers, but no salary considerations appear to have been involved in the decision.

Nodl – $850k
Matsumoto – $600k
Maroon – $528k
Ross – $500k

I’d guess they feel like these guys have some chemistry after playing last season?

My guess is based on how they plan to reshuffle the lines, calling up a right winger (Nodl) made more sense than a left winger (Maroon). And for what it’s worth, Ross has proven that he can be a decent fill-in fourth line center.

From Carchidi:

The Flyers strongly considered recalling right winger Stefan Legein (three goals in 10 games) from the Phantoms but opted for Nodl (three goals in 16 games) because of his familiarity with the team and coaches, Holmgren said.

I’ll give you more on each of these guys tonight. My computer at work is doing some screwy things when it comes to putting an article out. I also was surprised by the names. Ross is an underperforming captain, and I was shocked to see him get the call up. He plays bigger than his size, but seemed to be a little man in a big man games this year.
Nodl would have not surprised earlier in the season, but as of late has fallen off. He started as 4th line guy on opening night, played very physical and has been moved all around the line-up since. As of late he had appeaered to have been in Gilbert’s dog house and not seeing much ice time.

I am not a big fan of Ross but I can understand why Nodl has been called up. These guys are replacing Betts and Powe checking line / role players not goal scorers. You call up the guys you have to most experience to come in a play solid D. Something Nodl did well last year I am not sure how Ross is defensively but more offensive orientate guys like Matsumoto and Maroon would not fit in well on the 3rd and 4th lines.

I imagine Carcillo will move up to play with Giroux and Lilaberte make the checking line Ross, Lappy and Nodl.

Nodl was a minus-15 in 38 games with the Flyers last year, while Ross was a minus-4 in 10 games.

Their Corsi numbers relative to the team were also bad, (Ross -20.7, Nodl -3.1) despite starting in the offensive zone 50% and 49% of the time.

Basically, neither of them are good defensive players. They are both supposed to be goal scorers, but this year they aren’t even scoring. And in the AHL, Ross is a minus-5 while Nodl is a minus-3. In contrast, Jon Matsumoto is a plus-3 and Pat Maroon is a minus-2. The only rationale is that these guys played (poorly) with the Flyers last year, so let’s call them up instead of seeing somebody new.

Another consideration in this decision on who to call up:

If Ross or Nodl catch fire they could be trade bait to a younger team like the Isles in return for a veteran checking forward or 3rd pair dman.

Sort of like the Patrick Sharp trade years ago, Ross or Nodl could be seen as a guy with promise and given the chance to develop on a growing team (think Isles).

That is a great point.

Although, I doubt that is Steven’s and Homer’s thinking, honestly. I hope that happens. We know both of these guys are nothing more then AHL players. If we could use them as trade bait for a Bill Guerin type player, I would be ecstatic.

Then again, what is the likelihood of either of these guys catching fire?
