Note: Apologies for no game recap last night.

After a dominating win last night in Buffalo, the Flyers took the red-eye home to Philadelphia and are ready for faceoff against the St. Louis Blues tonight at Wachovia Center. The Blues come into the game as a shaky team with just five wins on the season. Might some of that be attributed to their trip to Europe a month ago to begin the season? It's a possibility, but whatever the reason, the Blues are not living up to expectations here early in the year.

Since beating Detroit twice in Europe, St. Louis has won just three times over Minnesota, Carolina, and Anaheim. Not exactly an impressive resume. Still, they have a ton of young talent while also possessing a strong veteran presence with Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya up front. In goal, the Blues are led by Chris Mason, a 12-year pro who slowly worked his way through the ranks before finally landing a steady job with St. Louis last season.

After some speculation that Brian Boucher could get his second start of the season tonight, the Flyers will go with Ray Emery yet again. The entire lineup will be exactly the same as last night, meaning Danny Briere and Ryan Parent are both still out.

Last time these two teams met last season, the Flyers were also ravaged by a flu bug. Two defensemen missed that contest, which the Flyers inexplicably lost 4-0, but tonight, while still tarnished by sickness, the orange and black will have everybody in the lineup. The question is how they will handle the flu after playing just 24 hours ago.

The Flyers are a better team than St. Louis and should beat them on home ice tonight. Hopefully the flu doesn't help the Blues out.

After the jump, a few questions to answer this evening.

Star-divide

Questions to Answer

  1. How do the Flyers react to sickness after a busy 24 hours?
  2. What does the Carcillo/Betts/Laperriere line do for an encore after playing a key role in three of the Flyers five Friday night goals?
  3. Can the young, speedy Blues dictate the tempo against the Flyers?
  4. Mason made 37 saves on the Flyers last time they met. Can he keep up that magic?

7 PM puck drop from South Philly. Watch on CSN Philly in HD, listen at 610 WIP, and as always, join us here for the conversation. LET'S GO FLYERS!

Am I the only one who just heard someone whose mic obviously shouldn’t be on say “what a bum, come on — end this fucking game”?

At the end of the Nova football game?

Yeah. Just did a quick Twitter search and I’m not alone. That was a great end of the game, production crew cursing or not.

I turned the channel just after he missed the field goal, so I must’ve missed it.

Here we go. Deadspin found a YouTube upload of it.

That was hilarious. Was that one of the announcers that said that?

by flyrsfrk05 on Nov 7, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

I assume it was someone on the production crew whose mic was unintentionally being fed out onto the air.

So at this rate, Boosh is going to get what, another 4 or 5 starts this entire season? Something’s not right.

by Ben Feldman on Nov 7, 2009 7:06 PM EST reply actions

Anthony SanFillippo said on Twitter that he thinks Boosh “isn’t a happy camper” and “isn’t getting along with Stevens.” I asked if he has proof of that or if he’s just speculating.. he hasnt answered me yet. I think that’s kinda irresponsible if he’s speculating.

I’m glad they’re starting off on a better foot than last night. I’m still recovering from how disorganized they looked at the beginning last night (although they did get it together later).

by NoalB on Nov 7, 2009 8:29 PM EST reply actions

i guarantee you that if a flyer hit absolutely any skater in the league like that, there’s zero chance of a diving call, and hell they might just give the flyer extra minutes

by chrislanci on Nov 7, 2009 8:45 PM EST reply actions

I think it was a clean hit. It’s unfortunate that he turned away from it when he did, but I don’t think you can blame him for turning away like that. I don’t even think he saw the hit coming. It looked like the goalie kinda screened his vision.

Unfortunate all around, but I don’t think it warranted that harsh of a suspension.

it’s not bad enough, all the non-calls and bad calls, but now we have incontrovertible video evidence of the referee cutting JVR! dun dun duuuunnnnn!

That didn’t look very bad for JVR. hope they gave him a band aid. Preferably Spongebob

Asham had one shift the entire third period according to Panotch?

by Ben Feldman on Nov 7, 2009 9:40 PM EST reply actions

Not accurate. He had three. With the injury to JVR and Laliberte as his other linemate, it’s kinda understandable as to why.

also watching richards’ and carter’s progress with shootouts, it becomes even more clear that john stevens is a bad coach. since day 1 carter has always come in way too fast every time, he needs to slow down and catch the goalie moving laterally (exactly like pyorala did).

by eeeeee on Nov 7, 2009 9:58 PM EST reply actions

Almost makes me wonder if the goalies in the league are more prepared for Carter because he uses the same moves too often, he’s gotta make some adjustments to get back the scoring touch he had the first half of last year.

by DragonGirl0583 on Nov 7, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

i mean just look at giroux. two goals on two sick moves this year (i’m speaking about in the shootout, of course, but it’s more broadly applicable), one to the forehand, one to the back. you just don’t know where he’s going, and you can bet that whichever way he goes, he’s gonna put a nice shot on.

by eeeeee on Nov 7, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Giroux is nothing if not unpredictable

by DragonGirl0583 on Nov 7, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

heheheh, well said. also he’s a superhuman at passing, though that admittedly doesn’t come up much in the shootout.

by eeeeee on Nov 7, 2009 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

Pyorala seems decent. Hopefully his shootout goal gets him going

by SkookFlyerfan on Nov 7, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions

What a great game, both from a Flyers fan point and a fan of the NHL. Super smooth back and forth with some great hits. After a horrible day on the links this was a sweet ending.
