Monday Morning Fly By: Injuries around every corner
Your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news...
- Last night's NHL scores... ATL 3, STL 2 (OT) - EDM 5, COL 3
- It was a weekend of injuries around the NHL, and brutal ones at that. Most notably, Carolina goaltender Cam Ward suffered a horrifying laceration to his upper left leg on Saturday night when Columbus' Rick Nash's skate came up and caught him. He'll miss at least three weeks, a devastating blow to an already suffering Hurricanes team. [Canes Country]
- In Detroit, winger Jason Williams will miss at least two months after breaking his right fibula -- that's his leg, for the uninitiated. [Winging It In Motown]
- Alex Ovechkin has been sidelined for about a week now, and in an interview with Puck Daddy, he said that he'll be out about four-to-five weeks. Not so fast, AO. [Japers']
- In Pittsburgh, they entered Saturday night's game in San Jose without Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar, Tyler Kennedy, or Maxime Talbot. Add Kris Letang to the list, as he fell with a shoulder problem. He could be out a while, too. [Pensburgh]
- Of course, the Flyers weren't exempt on the injury front this weekend. With Simon Gagne, Danny Briere, and Ryan Parent already out, James van Riemsdyk and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen didn't complete Saturday's game. OKT has a concussion and JVR has a fractured pinky finger. Each are listed as day-to-day. [CSN Philly]
- As if it were some kind of foreshadowing, Puck Daddy published a list of the top 10 most brutal NHL injuries of the last decade on Saturday afternoon. Randy Jones' hit on Patrice Bergeron and Patrick Thoresen's "potentially ruptured testicle" each make the cut. [PD]
- While Danny Syvret has been less than impressive as a Flyer this season, the guy he was traded for, Ryan Potulny, is getting a chance with the Oilers. Until now, he has only played in eight NHL games since the June 2008 trade. [Oilers]
- Spectrum seats go on sale today at 10 AM. [BSH]
- The Phantoms played once this weekend and fell to archrival Albany 3-1. [Post-Star]
- If you don't venture past the main column of this site, you a) have tunnel vision and b) missed out on some good discussion of the current standings system, started by mikefive over the weekend. [BSH FanPosts]

Not related to anything, but it takes a quarter of the schedule before we face either New York team. I’m curious to see if the Islanders can get a win or two against us this year…

I wouldn't be surprised.
They seem to be better this year, somehow.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Their goaltending has mysteriously improved :P
Last year, MacDonald/Danis had a .901/.910 save percentage. This year, Biron/Roloson have a .915/.914 save percentage.
Their defense has also cut shots against per game by about half a shot per game so far this season, from 33.45 to 33. It’s still higher than I’d like to see for a team I was rooting for, but it’s movement in the right direction.
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
more evidence that the NHL schedules makers are mentally retarded, for some reason the Sabers played 3 out of 4 games against the Islanders in their 1st 12 games similar to our 4 out of 7 games against the Canes in November last year, I am not from Canada but they do have computer their right, it shouldn’t be this hard to put together a balanced schedule playing all your games against division rivals over one period of time doesn’t reflect how good you team is for the entire 82 games, what if Miller was out with the flu last week and the Isles got 3 games against the backup if they were in the same division that you be a huge advantage to the Isles.
I’m completely inclined to believe Ovechkin. There’s no reason for the Caps to say he’ll be out longer than on a game by game basis, if they want to keep people open to buying tickets for a few weeks from now at full blast.
If nothing else, the whole experience is enlightening Caps fans to the fact that there is more to a hockey team than stars. As indicated by this brilliant comment on Japers’ Rink:
The Phonebooth was full, and LOUD last night. On a night the fans knew full well they would not see AO, Gangsta, or Sarge.
Yay Caps Nation!

Is it just me or is the scheduling just ridiculous this season? The Flyers have another 4 day break? Really?

Really.
But given the flu and the injuries, I’ll take it.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree now, but let’s see how we feel when we’re making up all this time in the next few weeks, and then again come March and April.

Meh
The Potulny/Syvret trade is likely a wash. At least Danny earned a spot in the Flyers’ lineup, somehow.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I think that trade might hold the record for smallest players involved in a single 1 for 1 trade, or at least I thought NHL.com and Wikipedia has Syvret listed at 5ft 11in 200lbs and tiny Ryan Potulny at 6ft 190lbs. For comparison Mike Richards is listed at 5ft 11in and 195lbs on what planet is Syvret bigger in height and weight than Mike Richards, Kimmo is listed at 5ft 10 in and 194 lbs he looks bigger than Syvret, these reported heights and weights are a joke.
