Around SBN: Off Tackle Empire interviews Rich Rodriguez

"Third star, Chris Pronger -- Even at age 35, there's no slowing the Philadelphia defenseman. He has a four-game point-scoring streak, and had 4 assists and 5 points in three games last week. Pronger also was a plus-5 while average more than 25 minutes per game of ice time."

NHL.com on the third star of last week, Chris Pronger.

Pronger's the first Flyer to pick up any such honor this season.

Shhh… he’s an old overpaid pylon that the Flyers traded the future away for, remember?

A sure sign that the Pronger trade is paying dividends for both teams

Pronger has overcome some early adjustment issues and has really upped his game. Braydon Coburn seems to be learning a lot from him, and it’s turning his season around.

Lupul is scoring in bunches again for Anaheim. The Ducks are 1-3 (technically, 1-2-1) when he scores a goal and 5-6 when he does not.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

Sbisa is tearing it up with 4 points in 4 games…

…in Lethbridge of the WHL.

Even when Pronger is an old man at the end of his contract, he will be a #3 defenseman at worst. Totally worth the late-round first picks, Lupul, and a kid that everyone loves for some reason, but keeps getting shipped back to junior.

Luca is only 19. I think the fact that he has played decently in his short stints in the NHL is a good indication of the kid’s future. He will never be a Pronger but I don’t think its a stretch to think this kid has the potential to be a solid NHL defensemen one day (even if that is 3 or 4 years from now when he is 21 or 22). All signs so far, are pointing toward that so it is tough to surrender that much upside. Obviously, that is what people feel uneasy about.

But, we knew what we were getting with Pronger and so far he has been exceptional. And, you are right, he is going to be a #3 defensemen, at the lowest, even when he is an “old man.” Also, I think that Luca is very replaceable so I am not losing any sleep.
