Game 31, Preview and Open Thread: On the Scene of the Winter Classic, Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins, Dec 14, 2009 7:00 PM EST

#13 Philadelphia Flyers (14-15-1, 29 pts) at #5 Boston Bruins (16-9-6, 38 pts)
TD Garden - 7:00 PM EST - Boston, MA

Radio: 610 WIP, XM 205
This is the open game thread.
Behind Enemy Lines: Stanley Cup of Chowder
Bruins_yellow_medium

A little over three miles away from TD Garden, through the Back Bay section of Boston, they're prepping the ice at Fenway Park for a little get together between the Bruins and Flyers on New Years Day. But if the team from Philadelphia is still floundering come January 1, that game will certainly lack some of the luster. Beating the Bruins at home tonight would be a nice first step toward turning the season around.

After a flat performance on Saturday night in Newark, the Flyers have no time to reflect as they'll play four games over the next six nights. At the same time, they can't trap themselves into looking ahead to a home and home with Pittsburgh coming up on Tuesday and Thursday. Boston is one of the better teams in the East yet again, and they'll certainly make the Flyers pay for such an error.

As has been the case over the last several weeks, it's the same old problems that are plaguing this team. No offense, no competitiveness, weak power play, etc. When will this hit rock bottom? For the love of Gene Hart, make it be tonight.

Braydon Coburn is out of the lineup tonight, hobbled with an ankle injury. Perhaps that's a reason for his weak play over the last... all season? Ole-Kristian Tollefsen returns to the lineup. Also, Dan Carcillo will be back in action tonight, fresh off his four game suspension. Don't sucker punch anybody tonight, please.

Good news for the Flyers: Milan Lucic is still out for Boston. Still, Boston is 8-1-2 in their last 11.

After the jump, line combinations, starting goaltenders, questions to answer, and our in-game open thread.

Star-divide

Flyers Line Combinations - conflicting reports, but this is what I've come up with.

Richards - Carcillo - Carter
Hartnell - Giroux - Briere
JVR - Pyorala - Asham
Laperriere - Kalinski - Cote

Carle - Pronger
Parent - Timonen
Bartulis - Tollefsen

Starting Goaltenders

GP MIN W L EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
Brian Boucher 11 592 3 7 25 2.53 259 234 .903 0

GP MIN W L EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
Tim Thomas 18 1077 7 7 45 2.51 507 462 .911 3

As you can see, Thomas hasn't had an excellent season thus far. Tuukka Rask has had a lot of playing time of late.

Questions To Answer

  1. Tim Thomas hasn't won a game since the 2nd and hasn't been great this season. Can the Flyers take advantage?
  2. Claude Giroux has scored the Flyers' last three goals. CAN SOMEONE ELSE SCORE, PLEASE?
  3. Can the Flyers get the first goal and gain some momentum early?
  4. Power play. Goals?
  5. How's Tollefsen look now that he's back in the lineup?
  6. Does Carcillo noticeably hold back at all, fresh off his four game suspension?

Tonight's game has been pushed from CSN over to sister channel The Comcast Network. Channel 8 (and 201 in HD) on Comcast systems in the Delaware Valley. Otherwise, listen in at 610 WIP and, as always, join us here for the conversation. LET'S GO FLYERS!

I wonder if the broadcast will bother showing the game, or will we just get two hours of more Winter Classic nonsense.

January 2nd can’t come soon enough.

I take it you’re not looking forward to it…

Not in the least. Dislike concerts in stadiums, too.

There’s a reason arenas are built nothing like stadiums. Is the closest seat to the ice in Fenway closer to the glass than the last row of seats in the Garden.

Not a fan of mystique? Or aura? Or any of those overused adjectives?

You’ll have a nice view from the couch, though, so why hate on the event?

Broad Street Hockey - SB Nation's Philadelphia Flyers Blog. Makin' it look mean since 1967.

by Travis Hughes on Dec 14, 2009 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Because I don’t give a fuck about Flyers Toque hats when I could be seeing a replay of a penalty that the camera missed in the first place.

by MarioD on Dec 14, 2009 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

By the way, did you know that Fenway doesn’t even have heat in the locker rooms?

Its the definition of a specacle with no regar for the game itself.

by MarioD on Dec 14, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I am willing to bet there is heat in the clubhouses at Fenway and if there isn’t they will bring in heaters for the game.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Dec 14, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

They’ve gotta do something for heat when the Sox are in the playoffs, so I’m sure they have a solution. Again, space heaters. It’s not that tough.

Broad Street Hockey - SB Nation's Philadelphia Flyers Blog. Makin' it look mean since 1967.

by Travis Hughes on Dec 14, 2009 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure they’ll figure it out, though the locker room is too small for hockey players without space heaters clogging it up.

My point is just that its stupid to be playing hockey games in a place which is in no way, shape, or form equipped to house hockey games.

by MarioD on Dec 14, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

It hasn’t prevented Phoenix from having a hockey team. /rim shot

Sorry, I’m exhausted from Halladay rumors/Flyers fatigue.

by doubleh on Dec 14, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Space heaters.

I agree to an extent. But when just about everybody who’s played in the Winter Classic says it’s a great event, it’s hard to think otherwise. There’s no denying the NHL is just in it because it’s a huge money maker, but so what? It’s a fun event, and after everything, this is just entertainment. I don’t think it hurts the integrity of the game or any of that, either.

Broad Street Hockey - SB Nation's Philadelphia Flyers Blog. Makin' it look mean since 1967.

by Travis Hughes on Dec 14, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

No, I don’t think it hurts the integrity of the game. But I actually like hockey. I don’t need it wrapped up in spectacle and ridiculousness that only takes away from the discussion, footage, et al of actual hockey.

by MarioD on Dec 14, 2009 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t pacify these prima donna’s. I would think most of these guys grew up playing outdoors and there were very few heaters to go around. And if that is why this team fails to perform we are bigger trouble than I originally thought. However, I also think this media glut is ridiculous. They are making a sideshow of this sport enough with the stupid shootout, it doesn’t need to sell out to a corporate bowl game as well.

My magic 8 ball says the flyers will win this one and go on a decent winning streak to close the month.

I mean, if losing to the Bruins tonight means we win the Winter Classic while I’m in attendance, I’ll take it. =P

Otherwise, I’d like to see a damn win tonight.

That scoring chance and subsequent PP were created by Laviolette’s defenseman pinching system.

Time to trade everyone for a bunch of draft picks and rebuild.

It doesn’t matter what the Flyers do. Hold an opponent to 13 shots – lose. Play a solid game on the road against one of the better teams in the league – lose.

I know I’m late on this one, but is it bad that I think we might have cursed them, on this board when we were talking about ‘being so close in points with games in hand’ on the game thread of the San Jose game?

Anywho, the whole wiccan equivalent of karma is the rule of three, whatever energy you send out into the world you get back times 3…. for all bad energy you send out you get 3x the bad energy back, for all good energy you send out you get 3x the good energy back. So if you get everyone you can to generate some positive karma, the ship could theoretically be righted thanks to the larger returns.

This reminds me of when the 1980 Olympic team had a one goal lead on the Soviets in the third period and they just kept looking at the clock, wishing it would speed up.

So, since Kimmo scored, my story will wait until at least Wednesday, if at all. Hopefully they’re out of their scoring slump, but here was the picture for my story:

Caption: After Jeff Carter was credited with 12,312,412 more missed shots, he was left wondering if the net he was shooting at was in fact regulation size.

Kelly green hoodie, blue jeans, Winnipeg Jets t-shirt.

I reserve the right to have different socks and underwear on, though.

I have to set a good example for people in my line of work. I assume that putting on clean underwear/socks every day is part of setting a good example.

Once I get home, it’s a different story.

Well, I mean, if you wanna get technical, nobody is really checking out your underwear and socks at work.

Then again, I’m not sure what you do for a living. Hahaha.

If this is what we have to look forward to with Laviolette, then I’m all for it.

I loved how Carcillo and Richards took time and space away from Chara behind his own net late in the third.

I think we need to call them this for the rest of the season. If they turn it around, they become the Mighty Ducks. If not, District 5 is accurate.
