Game 34, Preview and Open Thread: Snow Day! New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers
New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers, Dec 19, 2009 1:00 PM EST
#9 New York Rangers (15-16-3, 33 pts) at #13 Philadelphia Flyers (15-16-2, 32 pts)
Wachovia Center - 1:00 PM ET - Philadelphia, PA
TV: CSN Philly HD, MSG 2
Radio: 610 WIP
This is the open game thread.
Behind Enemy Lines: Blueshirt Banter

Yes, the game is still on.
While most of the Delaware Valley is snowed in thanks to one of the biggest December storms in recent memory, the Flyers will look to dig themselves out as they face off against those hated Rangers for the first time this season.
Simon Gagne will be in the Flyers lineup today as the team finally starts to regain their health. Will he be the spark the Flyers need to get their offense back on track? We'll find out today. He'll play on the top line with Mike Richards and Dan Carcillo.
The Rangers come into town looking just as bad as the Flyers. They're one point ahead of the orange and black thanks to an extra game, but they're 2-6-2 in their last 10. Wade Redden and Ales Kotalik were benched after Wednesday night's loss against the Islanders, and in the back end of their home-and-home on Thursday, the Rangers snapped a five game losing streak.
John Tortorella will go with the same lineup today, sitting his struggling veterans in favor of Erik Christensen and Bobby Sanguinetti. Marian Gaborik is really the Rangers only true scoring threat, and he leads the league with 24 goals, but we also have to look out Ryan Callahan, who's on a bit of a hot streak with seven points in his last four games.
It's also Blair Betts' first game against his former team.
After the jump, Flyers probable line combos, starting goaltenders, questions to answer, and our in-game open thread.
Flyers Line Combinations
Carcillo - Richards - Gagne
Hartnell - Carter - Briere
JVR - Giroux - Asham
Pyorala - Betts - Laperriere
Starting Goaltenders
Questions To Answer
- How does Gagne perform now that he's back in the lineup? He only had one goal in the nine games he played this season, if you remember.
- Do Hartnell and Carter carry over the chemistry they displayed on Thursday?
- Can the Flyers successfully stop Marian Gaborik?
- How many people actually make it to the game today?
Today's game is on CSN Philly at 1 PM, and MSG 2 if you're in North Jersey or the NYC area. Listen at 610 WIP, stay warm, and as always, join us for the conversation. LET'S GO FLYERS!

Maybe just Maybe Gagne is the answer to turn this team around, sure its highly improbably but one can only hope.
Not any time soon. Gage historically plays scared for about a month after returning from injury. Even Gagne himself concedes this:
“It’s definitely going to take more than four or five games before I feel good and feel like myself again,” he said after yesterday’s practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. “I don’t expect to be the same player [today] as when I was 100 percent and in good shape. It’s going to take time, and I have to be patent.”

The thing is, everyone will make mistakes. But competent writers will correct it and apologize. I guarantee he’ll never mention it again. He probably doesn’t even know its wrong.
Exactly. Even Seravalli copped to a mistake he made here. An entire paragraph, with explanation and apology, and he clearly was embarrassed.

I would think Downie.
I would never want Avery. We piss and moan about Carcillo, Avery is 100 times worse, and he runs his mouth off the ice too.
See I disagree. Hartnell has more skill. Secondly Hartnell just does dumb things without thinking. Avery is calculated. He knows exactly what he is doing. If anything, Avery is a poor man’s Tie Domi.

The difference between Avery and Domi is that Avery’s afraid to fight most tough guys. Domi would fight anybody — Avery antagonizes and skates away when somebody drops the gloves.

why are we incapable of scoring. It seems every goalie we play against turns into superman. I hate to blame luck, but it seems everytime we get a good chance the puck takes an odd bounce away from us
all our shots that make it to the net are low % and
All scoring chances miss the net or are blocked
by SanDiegoScraps on Dec 19, 2009 3:07 PM EST up reply actions
I just got home, so forgive me for being out of the loop of conversation, but does this whole thing seem a little slow motion to anyone else?
There doesn’t seem to be hustle from either team, which is so weird. The puck is like drifting along slowly… when somebody does actually make a pass at what would be normal speed (like Asham’s 30 seconds ago), it seems completely out of place because the pace is so slow
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 19, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions
because we dont play against ourselves. I honestly dont think its the opposing goalie, we literally are jus cursed.
and has anyone else noticed everytime Carter gets the puck he trys the same move, he skates to the outside, waits 2 seconds and basically tells the goalie what hes about to do, and then takes a wide angled wrist shot thats easy to stop.
Yeah, apparently they only had 90 seconds of energy left in the tank and felt they had to save it til the end… I cant tell how much of the problem is motivation, what part is lack of conditioning, etc.

I could almost sense that the Rags knew that they only needed to score 2 goals to win. After the 2nd goal, they were playing “not to lose”, which is why we had so many shots in the 3rd period compared to them…
by SanDiegoScraps on Dec 19, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions
By the way...
… the season is over. They have what, 48 games left and they need to win at least 31 of them to have a shot at the playoffs?
Not gonna happen.
Holmgren and Snider need to go. It’s not enough to fire Holmgren because Snider will replace him with “a loyal organizational soldier.” We don’t need another inbred GM. We need fresh ideas. We need a new direction entirely.
It’s beyond the coach; it’s beyond the players. The culture of the organization must change or it will be doomed to fail.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Disagree
The play on the ice is lackluster. They need to get rid of some big names, get draft picks, and sign a top echelon goalie. Bot a 2nd tier, not a goalie with upside, they need a top 5, top 10 goalie. How they do that, I don’t know. King Henry won that game for the Rangers. Boucher doesn’t win games
TAKE THE FALL, ACT HURT, GET INDIGNANT
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Dec 19, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions
I agree that we need a stud netminder, but today was not Boucher’s fault. We can’t fucking score.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
People are awarding Boucher with playing great goaltending, keeping the Flyers in games. This is what happens to Boucher: opposing team scores goals, grabs a 1-2 goal lead over the Flyers. Then the other team throws lazy shots/typical flyers shots at Boucher that a backup can stop. Since the Flyers couldn’t score if the other goalie was a prostitute, the other team can slow the game down and all they have to do is keep the Flyers off the board.
TAKE THE FALL, ACT HURT, GET INDIGNANT
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Dec 19, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions
I also disagree. Its not the coaches, or the management. This team just cannot score. If you’re players won’t score you can’t do anything. The Adirondack Phantoms could score more than these bums. they’re professionals and BY ACCIDENT they should score more goals
by SkookFlyerfan on Dec 19, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions
There is no reason at all that we should be saying “This team cannot score.” We need to trade one big name for another because some of our big names need a fresh start elsewhere. My problem is, who gets traded and for whom? Does Homer make a shrewd move or screw up?
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
No. He’s made good moves before, so he could do it again.
The way things have been going though, I only expect failure.
That angers me to no end. We’re supposed to be the proud, always-competitive Flyers. And we are anything but.
I hope 2010 features the worst draft in NHL history since we won’t be getting anyone.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
exactly. THey need to do something to send a message. Laviolette and/or homer better be in the locker room throwing chairs right now. And make Carter/Hartnell/one of our “stars” a healthy scratch for the next game to send a message. It worked when ANdy Reid Benched Donovan. Act like a bitch get treated like a bitch. thats the message that needs to be sent
I thought the Carter/Hartnell/Briere line was solid today. They are a microcosm of the team – working hard but not producing.
The only “message” that can be sent effectively is a trade.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
They were the best line on the ice, but you have to send a message somehow. SOmetimes someone just has to be the fall guy. you cant bench the captain as that would create a shitstorm that would last well beyond this season. As you said, that line was a microcosm of the team and for that reason one of them needs to be the fall guy to send the message that working hard but not finishing isnt good enough.
if they cant turn things around this team is fucked for the long term. Richards signed a 12 year contract and he looks like a role player at best right now. Carter will be gone in two years but he hurts his trade value everytime he steps on the ice. Briere’s contract makes him untradeable. Pronger is as advertised but we’ll have given up a top 5 draft pick to get him. We don’t have a goalie. Every other “good” player on our team is signed to a long term fat contract that makes them untradeable. were stuck this team blows.
it’s easy to lead a team when the team is winning. It takes a real captain to lead in the face of defeat.

Richards is trying. Stevens’ departure lit a fire under him. I never thought I’d hear him say anything like he did after the 6-1 loss at Pittsburgh.
Much like the Lindros era, we’ve got the right centerpiece but the wrong supporting cast. And this has been going on for the last 20 years.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Pronger speaks, Boucher speaks, Laviolette speaks. Time for Richie to own up and open up to the media, at least create some sort of drama other than “how much will this team suck tonight”

Get used to this ...
Nothing’s going to change with this team, because of all the talk that this team has the talent it needs to win, it certainly does not have the chemistry. Holmgren is not going to trade a player with talent to change the chemistry, so this is what they are stuck with. Worse, their 1st pick, which certainly seemed to be a late rounder when it was traded, looks like it will be an early rounder or, dare I say it, a lottery pick. So they don’t even get the prize waiting for them at the end of a dismal season.
But Philly fans can look forward to pitchers and catchers reporting in February, at least.
