Game 25, Preview and Open Thread: Bleeping Do It, Vancouver Canucks at Philadelphia Flyers
Vancouver Canucks at Philadelphia Flyers, Dec 3, 2009 7:00 PM EST
Vancouver Canucks (15-12-0, 30 pts) at Philadelphia Flyers (13-10-1, 25 pts)
Wachovia Center - 7:00 PM EST - Philadelphia, PA
TV: CSN Philly HD
Radio: 610 WIP, XM 205
This is the open game thread.
Behind Enemy Lines: Nucks Misconduct

Do you want to prevent a major shakeup? Do you want to save your coaches job? Win tonight and make us all feel a little better, Flyers. Sure, it's December. Sure, it's still early and sure, the Flyers have a ton of hockey left to play. But this team, with so many expectations coming in to the year, can't continue losing like they have been. That's unacceptable.
So is tonight a must win game? Well, they're 11 points out of first place. As Chris Pronger said the other day, "We need to make it bleeping happen on Thursday." Hey, it's Thursday.
Brian Boucher is in net as the Flyers try to get back on track. He's look good in his last several appearances, but the offense needs to be able to put the puck in the other net. That won't be an easy task, though, considering they have Roberto Luongo to beat.
In order to do that, the special teams are going to have to get back on track. They've been absolutely atrocious lately, especially the penalty killing units. They should be at the top of the league on the PK, but they've dropped like a stone in the rankings. Much like the team as a whole has...
Danny Briere returns for the Flyers. He missed two games with a suspension and then missed Saturday night's game in Atlanta with the flu. He'll likely play with Hartnell and Carter.
Vancouver played last night in New Jersey, beating the Devils 5-2. They haven't been successful in back-to-back games, though, and you should expect the orange and black to try and step on their necks early.
Apologies for the succinct preview. After the jump, questions to answer.
Questions To Answer
- Can the Flyers get to Luongo and the Canucks early?
- Can the special teams get back on track?
- How many hot dogs are consumed? Dollar dog night again...
- How many jokes get made at the expense of Jim Jackson's bald upper lip?
Tonight's game will be broadcast locally on CSN Philly and 610 WIP. As always, join us here for the conversation, and LET'S GO FLYERS!

what? you guys don’t have PPV for this? WTF, NHL? seriously, you PPV the game for the canucks viewers but not the other team???
(btw, do you guys mind if i swear? i know that some places are picky)
you’re worried about being 11 points out of 1st place? please, we are worried about being 1 point out of a playoff position

GO CANUCKS GO!
I’ve never even heard of a game being on PPV. Not in this century, at least. We’d have to go back to before CSN started up, and that was in 96 or 97. And before then most games were on PRISM, which was a premium channel but it wasn’t PPV.
What’s the deal, there?

GO CANUCKS GO!
We don’t have to deal with any PPV junk. All 82 games are broadcast on a local channel, be that CSN, NBC or Versus. It’s crazy that Canadian teams don’t have every single game locally.
you guys are lucky!!!
seriously, it sucks. all us nuckers will have to use online streams or go to bars tonight to watch the game

GO CANUCKS GO!
There are a surprising number of US teams that have most, if not all, 82 games broadcast locally. I don’t understand why that isn’t the case in Canada of all places…
someone just explained it at NM, turns out it’s up to the owners if they want to pay the expenses to make a huge profit off of PPV.

I sort of dislike how they refer to the Sedins as “the Twins.” I keep expecting to see some buxom blonde bimbos out there on the ice. Or a couple of cheerleaders hawking Doublemint or something…

Via wikipedia...
On October 10, 2007, Boulerice delivered a cross-check to the face of Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, with his team up 7-2 in the 3rd period. Boulerice received a 25 game suspension as disciplinary action from the league, which is tied for the second longest suspension for an on-ice incident in modern NHL history. 3

Feel bad for Stevens. I don’t think he’s the greatest coach ever, and I don’t know if he’s right for this group, but I don’t think he deserves what’s coming. Not that I would disagree with him being fired — he’s gotta take the blame since you can’t fire the players — but he really is a good guy.
Totally agreed. Couldn’t have said it better.

by SkookFlyerfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions
I’d like to see it happen.
Richards is not ready to be captain yet.. Pronger is the actual captain of this team — I believe that from seeing his comments the other day. I don’t care if that pisses off Richards, honestly. He’s the kinda guy that would use that energy positively. But this team needs a jump, and giving the C to Pronger is the proper way to go. He’ll whip them right into shape.

I can’t see them saving Stevens any other way. I think it may be a nice jolt. Especially after that horrble fight Richards had. Hopefully they do it between periods
by SkookFlyerfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions
Do you do that and fire Stevens at the same time? If that doesn’t jumpstart this team, nothing will.
I think they’ll do one or the other. I’d rather see the C traded. I agree that’d get them going, but i’d save it just in case they still don’t play well. Then if they don’t play well, I say they sacrifice a live chicken

/sarcasm
i’m currently enjoying that on yahoo’s box score, they don’t even know how to list that penalty it occurs so infrequently (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/boxscore?gid=2009120315)
So here is what is gonna happen:
The Flyers are going to come out and play a really tough 3rd period, get a goal, pepper Luongo all period and going to lose 3-1 with the Nucks adding an empty netter.
You heard it here first.
but they’re going to make it really exciting in the final couple of minutes before having that empty-netter scored on them. you’ll be on the edge of your seat, just sure that any second now the game’s going to be tied. but if the last two years have taught me anything, it’s that it will never be tied. ever.
And then, my friend, you die...
Well it certainly isn’t bleeping happening tonight, is it?
To paraphrase John Stevens, I love the effort, but…
No goals in the last 7 periods for us. Last Flyers goal was in the first period of the Buffalo game with like 3 seconds left. Nothing since then.
Not Stevens’ fault at all, but Stevens will take the fall. It’s a shame. I just hope they find a suitable replacement should it come to that.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
If I had to guess, it’ll be Laviolette. With Homer standing next to him, ready to shove sticks down throats.
That’d be my bet.
It’s more about the message sent by firing the coach then it is the actual replacement anyway.
But Laviolette is a hell of a coach.

Richards tries to do too much.
Perfect example right there: instead of dumping and chasing, he skates into the zone amidst 3 Canucks and runs out of room to do anything. Winds up turning the puck over. And this happens several times a game.

Wrong.
The system worked fine when the Flyers were playing it and scoring goals.
That was the same system they were playing when they won 7 of 8 games.
The Flyers are not playing as they should right now. That has nothing to do with Paul Holmgren.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
And, for what it's worth,
I don’t think Stevens deserves to be fired. But I’d be surprised if he weren’t.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
By the same token...
That didn’t surprise me when it happened. Their preseason was so “Meh” that I figured that Hitch had lost the team at that point.

Just as Stevens being fired wouldn’t be surprising now.
The difference is that this team still has hope for this season. Big hopes. That team was clearly lost.

Quality of Competition played no role in that streak…
Carolina
Tampa (Pre-Nitty starting goalie)
Buffalo
St Louis
Ottawa
Loss to Buffalo
New Jersey
Los Angeles (a game they should’ve lost)
There’s two quality wins out of those seven.
I'd say seven
Especially because you prove your own quality/worthiness when you beat teams you should beat.
Besides, St. Louis was a very good road team (at the time anyway, don’t know if they are now) and they won that game in LA no matter how you shake it. We could have / should have won our last three games but we did not.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
The most dramatic (and sensible) thing to do:
Fire Stevens and Bring in Laviolette.
Make Richards an A and give the C to Pronger.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
The stupidest thing to do:
Nothing.
Alternately: Fire Stevens and bring in Mike Keenan. That would be even worse than doing nothing.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Keenan would be a DISASTER.

Something needs to be done. Take the captaincy from Richards maybe. I don’t know. But they absolutely have to do something.

The Flyers need to be shocked into awareness, That’s all there is to it.
While Stevens does not deserve to be dismissed, a coaching change is justified in that it will get the team out of its comfort zone.
Bring in a new coach and suddenly you’ve got 23 guys who have something to prove. And hopefully by the time they’ve proven themselves they’re playing like a well-oiled machine.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Agreed.
I would hope that stripping Richards, the so-called franchise player, of the C would have the same effect.

This is just silly pop-psychology.
If the players don’t have motivation to play right now, trade them. They’re never going to be good players.
There is absolutely nothing that justifies a coaching change.

Right on both counts!
I live in DC and get Center Ice. I watched 80 friggin regular season games last year , and 79 the year before. I have been a fan since ‘75. I will not watch another game until a serious change is made. Can’t we get some dude from the roofers union to persuade Briere out of his contract? That would free up some serious cap space. Would also be happy to see Carter and Gagne go as well if we get some decent trades.
