Monday Morning Fly By: Laviolette teaching on the fly
Your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers...
- Last night's NHL scores... DET 3, NYR 1 - OTT 4, ATL 3 (SO)
- Dan Carcillo was suspended four games by the NHL yesterday (link). Reaction from around the web...
- ... beginning with the Philly MSM via Panaccio [CSN Philly] ...
- ... the enemy reaction [Japers' Rink] ...
- ... the outsiders views [Hockey Or Die] and [Puck Daddy] ...
- ... and the local reaction from [The 700 Level] and [FGSB].
- Here's an interesting piece that revolves around the same suspension, analyzing media bias from our MSM journos. I know it's from Washington, but I happen to agree with a lot of what they have to say here, unfortunately. At least take the read and get the perspective out of it. [Japers']
- Meanwhile, back in Philly/Voorhees, the Flyers are prepping for the Canadiens, who they take on tonight in Montreal. Preview and game thread later, the game page for now. [SB Nation] ...
- ... Peter Laviolette ran his first lengthy practice yesterday, and by all accounts it was a long, difficult skate. [CSN Philly] and [Bucks Co. Times]...
- ... and that kind of skate seems necessary, as this week is a major crossroads in the Flyers season [Inq] ...
- ... in which they hope they can find a fresh start [Globe & Mail] ...
- ... and, in one writers opinion, the captain has stepped up. Will the rest of the team? [Daily News]
- Another preview of tonight's game from the neutral perspective [NHL.com] ...
- ... but only one from the Montreal perspective [Gazette], as they seem forever occupied in their 100th anniversary celebration, which was supposed to end Friday after about a year and a half of chest-thumping. Be sure to check out SBN's Eyes on the Prize for everything Habs, though.
- Despite a slow start, it seems Ken Hitchcock's job is safe in Columbus. [Dispatch]
- Happy birthday to Peter Laviolette.

Carcillo's suspension
Certainly we need to stop taking dumb penalties but that is an internal matter not for Colin Campbell to handle; the penalty was way too high. First of all a nine minute powerplay; no penalty at all for the goonery that started all this. Then the suspension comes on top? The suspension would be more tolerable if the League suspended guys who goon the Flyers up, IT would be more tolerable if Malkin was a 7 tie repeat offender getting 15 game suspensions by now. He another Penguin double-teamed a Hawk the same night to the tune of a mere double minor. And Malkin’s final act was an elbow to the face. SO much for dangerous headshots being a concern of the League.
For Holmgren’s consideration Carcillo’s upside has not matched his downside.

No explnation
I have repeatedly seen that Flyers captains and assistant captains are ignored to told to be quiet in these situations while unlettered players from other teams talk endlessly with the referees. If it is true that Richards did note received an explanation as to why there was NO penalty on the Caps player then this referee needs to be publicly disciplined by the League

I agree with you on that one. The problem is that the NHL almost never criticizes their referees, even in the most obvious situations – e.g. Anaheim/Detroit last year. That’s something I do actually like about MLB: Either the umps themselves or the league will say, “He blew the call. It happens.” The NHL never admits wrong.
