Phantoms wearing "Broad Street Bullies" jerseys on Friday night

The Broad Street Bullies shaped the future of hockey in Philadelphia and also developed into an entire culture of expectations for opponents and fans at the historic Spectrum, making the building one of the most loathed places to play for other NHL organizations.

The Phantoms will be honoring those Flyers teams of the 70s on Friday, February 20 as part of their celebration of the final season at the Wachovia Spectrum. The club will wear a Broad Street Bullies-themed jersey as their second specialty jersey of the season when the club hosts Portland at 7:05.

I have a feeling a lot of people aren't going to like these jerseys. Personally though, I think they are awesome. They've got that original six look to them. The game on Friday will be televised on Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia. I doubt Giroux will be wearing one though...

For an NHL thing, no no no.

But for an AHL tribute to an NHL club’s history? I can dig it. My training normally objects to using a nickname (“Let’s use B-O-L-T-S!”) on a jersey. But for minor league and tribute purposes, it’s kinda cool.

I don’t like them, and it’s more of an objection to them trying too hard. Yes, it’s a minor league team, but it reeks of blatant commercialism. I’d honestly rather see a Charlestown Chiefs throwback than a fictitious rendering. Maybe if it just said “Bullies” rather than the whole thing… I don’t know.

Put that thing back on th rack and back away s-l-o-w-l-y.

Yikes.

I think Shagg is onto the right path: mimic the Syracuse jersey from Slap Shot (or whatever the orange one was that Ogie Ogilthorpe was wearing) and you’re miles ahead of this monstrosity.

Sorry.

I completely understand where you guys are coming from. I’m not surprised you don’t like them. I just think it’s cool and different, and it’s definitely a style of sweater that has a lot of history in the game. That’s why I like it. I’d be pissed if they or the Flyers decided to wear these regularly.
