Broad Street Bits: Wednesday 2.18.09

- Sam Carchidi of the Inquirer writes on the emergence of the Upshall-Giroux-Powe line, particularly how impressive they've been in their short time together.
- His tooth-less smile may be misleading, but Darroll Powe's a smart guy. The Princeton grad is living his dream with the Flyers while his classmates are working on Wall Street, Ed Moran writes today in the Daily News.
- Powe is a common theme this morning (he must've had an entertaining chat with a few reporters after practice yesterday something). Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post has another piece on Powe, while also offering up notes on Danny Briere's status.

- TSN reports that an offer has been made to buy the Coyotes.
- Mike Brophy of Rogers Sportsnet breaks down the needs for each team in the East. For the Flyers, they say it's the goaltending. Not sure I agree with that as a deadline need, but feel free to debate it in the comments. They also say that Holmgren is "very aggressive in filling holes in his roster." Can't argue with that one.
- John Buccigross of ESPN (the best guy at the network) re-visits his preseason NHL predictions in his weekly column. He wasn't far off with the Flyers (picked them fifth, currently fourth, but he appears to have been wrong with the Rangers, Penguins, and Canadiens. He picked them at 4, 2, and 1 respectively.
- NHL.com has a pretty cool Q&A about the trade deadline.
- Rory Boylen of The Hockey News takes a look at some growing rivalries. Philadelphia-Washington makes the cut, along with Detroit-Columbus.

- I contributed to Illegal Curve's trade deadline, as did a blogger from each NHL team. It's quite the undertaking on their part, and the finished product is quite impressive. It breaks down the needs and the available players on each NHL team as we get closer (14 days now) to the deadline. Thanks to IC for asking me to be involved.
- Mirtle lets us know that the Montreal media has found a reason for the Habs recent plunge in the standings: too much partying. Hm, it hasn't hurt the Flyers...
- Puck Daddy has the full story on the drama in Montreal. Alexei Kovalev won't be with the team on their upcoming trip because, according to GM Bob Gainey, "he's been so ineffective this season, his services won't be needed." Sergei Kostitsyn was also sent to the AHL.
- More from Mirtle, this time his Selke Watch. Mike Richards is an early candidate.
- Litter Box Cats has a different take on the offensive capabilities of Mister Jay Bouwmeester.
- Defending Big D analyzes the impact of Brad Richards recent injury. Could it derail the Stars meteoric rise in the standings?
- Pensburgh breaks down Dan Bylsma's first game as head coach.
- Stanley Cup of Chowder reports that the Bruins are looking to land Erik Cole.
- SBN is becoming a Twitter madhouse. one, two, three, etc.
