The "Getting To Know You" Thread

Alright, so I think with the new Yahoo! deal and the coming influx of new readers (and hopefully quality members), it might be a good time for anybody who reads this site to introduce yourself. A lot of you comment every day and I don't know a damn thing about you, and to be honest, I'm curious. Even if you don't post often (or ever), feel free to step up and tell us a little about yourself.

I'll start with myself. I have a bio page on the site, but the cliff notes version...

I'm Travis (obviously). I was born in Philly, raised in South Jersey, and I love all the Philly sports teams. I'm absolutely obsessed with the Flyers and it borders on unhealthy, but that's fine with me.

I also like Seinfeld and orange soda a lot.

I go to school in Connecticut and consequently love when Boston and New York sports fans suffer. UPDATE - I go to school in Jersey now, but I still love when Boston and New York sports fans suffer.

Chris here. Born in Philly, raised in South Jersey. Diehard of the Phils, Eagles and Flyers. I was at Game 5 and it was the happiest I’ve ever been. No, really. I went to Georgetown, 2007 grad. Live in DC and work for SB Nation. Community Manager – so hit me up if you ever have any problems with the site.

Good idea.

I’m Tim. I grew up in Upper Darby, PA and still live their after graduating from a small school (Ursinus College) where I played lacrosse collegiately and (admittedly) roller hockey (which I continue to play). I work for a financial firm based in Valley Forge, PA which is surprisingly doing just fine.

I know Ursinus well. In fact, I live right around the corner from it.

Name’s Alon, born and raised in Philly, currently attending Univ of Pennsylvania. Was a hockey fan until the Flyers lost to the Red Wings, lost some interest after the heartbreak (between that, the Sixers, Eagles, and Phillies, basically too much heartbreak. Lost interest in all but the Eagles, really). Starting a few years ago, got into all the teams again, especially the Flyers & Phils, especially the Flyers (they were always my 2nd favorite to the Eagles, and now they’re back that way).

It’s been fun trying to get back into the swing of hockey, learning new names and prospects and re-establishing the players I love (Gagne and I have a history together, Giroux has been a favorite since I first read about him, Richards & Carter obviously, and I’m also a big fan of Kyle Turris for some reason). Finding this site a week or two ago was incredible, it’s been exactly the hockey fix I was looking for.

This feels like the first day of any class: “Name, hometown, major, something interesting”. I’m Geoff, graduated from Pitt last year and am now at Drexel Law. Huge Flyers and WFC Phillies fan, don’t care about basketball and never got attached to the Eagles. I’ve been a Flyers fan since my first game at the age of 7 and had to put up with 4 years of Pittsburgh shit, so the only teams I hate more than the Mets are the Steelers and Penguins. That hatred is probably obvious, though.

by Geoff Detweiler on Feb 25, 2009 7:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I went to Pitt too – started in 1991 – finished in 2001 – yes, it took me a decade to get my BS in Psychology! I was a fixture at many Oakland bars. Moved out to San Diego right before 9-11.

Which Oakland bar did you frequent? Not sure if the names have changed – I’m sure most of them have.

I’m not familiar with Mitchell’s. I hated Hemingway’s, rarely went to F&F just to drink, but absolutely love their sweet potato fries and quality beer selection. I worked at Spice Cafe (underneath India Garden on Atwood St.) and we developed quite a raport with Gene’s Place, a bar that opened in 2001 right at the corner of Louisa and York (in between Atwood and Meyran).

I’m Justin. From upper Bucks County, work in KoP. I’m a Flyers and Phillies fan, have somehow survived as a NY Giants fan, and have no team allegiance in the NBA (I’ll follow/cheer for players). I’m a Penn State alum trying to get into grad school somewhere halfway across the country. I love college sports and the college atmosphere in general. I spent all 4 years of college working/volunteering my time for the Penn State Icers (thus the s/n), and I still make the 3 hour trip regularly to watch and help out. (For those who don’t know, Penn State’s highest level of ice hockey is a club level team playing in the ACHA DI, where they are one of the most dominant programs every year. We’re moving ever closer to making the jump to the NCAA, but a new rink must be had first…)

For the most part, I waste spend my time over at the Black Shoe Diaries – Penn State’s SBN site. They’ve been kind enough to show interest and support my Icers ramblings.

If anyone cares...

I did get into grad school halfway across the country. I’m currently working on my M.A. in Counseling at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. This also means that I’ve been reduced to hoping that the Flyers show up on Versus.

(And no – I have no plans to get any of the hockey/sports packages on TV. I just said I was a Master’s student, so I have even less money and more debt than undergrad.)

And yes – I still live over at Black Shoe Diaries. :)

jon, originally from philly, went to psu, now living in dc and contemplating buying center ice b/c bars are getting expensive down here.

flyers were my first philly sports love due to playing an excessive amount of street hockey growing up. tied at a distant second are the WFC phillies and eagles.

favorite flyers include poulin, tocchet, and hextall.

for those of you who haven’t seen Icersguy posts over at blackshoediaries, you should do so. the guy knows his stuff and really writes great posts covering psu hockey.

I'm kinda new to the blog

Cliffs:

Real name, David. Father of 2, originally from Valley Forge area, now living in Los Angeles.

Grew up playing hockey in the philly area with my brother, High school and club, including a national championship. Played in college (well rode some pine mostly, at Boston U.) Am back on the ice teaching my son to skate.

Catch all the Flyers games that are offered on DirectTV NHL package, thanks to the pretty cool HD-DVD Dvr. Most games are in HD, Only downside is that I have to listen to the opposing team’s commentators, who range from ok, to the most biased homers you can imagine.

Still big Eagles fan (cry), Baseball bores me, and basketball - welll the sixers blow.

I’m Heather. Been a Flyers’ fan since I discovered them on Prism on the set top box (channel 2) 26 years ago. Hockey was actually my first love, although Phillies’ baseball is a close second. I am a diehard all Philly sports fan, but most devoted to the Phils, Flyers and Villanova basketball (I am a 1994 VU grad). Fave Flyer of all time is most definitely Ron Hextall. I currently worship at the altar of Mike Richards, Chase Utley and Jay Wright.

And I am also a girl. Gasp. I am a bigger sports fan than all the men put together in my family. I am currently teaching my son the ways of Philly fandom and made sure he was present at the WFC parade!

PSU

being a philly fan in PSU was absolute hell. to start, when i first arrived, i was unaware that there was any animosity from that side of the state. big mistake-pitt fans have a huge inferiority complex when it comes to philly (constant need to prove themselves better when we couldn’t care less). Also compounding the issue is that it was decided that state college was to get only pitt telecasts. i am guessing it’s due to proximity.

the worst was the sports cafe (RIP). the staff was pitt-centric, so while they grudgingly put on the flyers, they would always drown the telecast with horrible music, even when nobody was there.

do your time there with pride. nail as many pitt skanks as possible (easy). and take no guff from that swine fanbase that only care for their team when said team is winning.

and you better go to the BJC tongiht-free tix and dollar dog night……

The animosity toward Philadelphia from Pittsburgh is hilarious! All you need to say is that you are from Philadelphia and you get dirty looks which I absolutely LOVE! They see how proud I am to be from Philly and it makes their blood curdle. Outside sports, there is no explanation for it except for the fact that they get overshadowed by Philly and completely resent that.

At first I didn’t know why but now I expect it so I try to announce it as much as possible . . .

fitz

hi guys and dolls…

born in chester, lived in the media/swarthmore area for about the first 15 years of life such that it is. was a goofy ‘want a be’ at age 13 during the ‘87 run at the cup… that was probably when i officially became ’flyer conscious’… i was all in the phils/six n’ birds as a wee wee in the early 80s… but taking gretz and the oils to 7 games was a thrill and i will always remember that feeling when we lost…:(- because that feeling hasnt gone away yet…

I had to move with the folks two years later, stuck in the BFE of virginia where the kids called me Howie because of my mark howe jersey These were dark times for sure… and i remember them well… my aunt from south jersey sent me VHS tapes of the caps/flyers 89 series since we had no cable… we didnt get prism in the south… sigh

I was in a rat infested basement apartment in Richmond VA, watching that 7 some OT game where Primes won it against the Pens… the rats were happy for me…

I love the Flyers and everything they stand for. I want the cup baby, just one time…

Long story short; Flyers win the cup=last 19 years of my life makes some sense.

Great idea Travis! I too have some fun facts about myself in my bio but I’ll expand them a bit.

My name is Mitchell Green. I am from Glenside (Cheltenham Township) where I attended Cheltenham HS and graduated in 2007. Now I am a junior Elementary Education major at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA which is 45 mins north of Pittsburgh (so if anyone hates Pittsburgh, it is me. That includes the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins and everything associated with the city).

I am a Philly fan through and through; that includes the Flyers, Phillies, Eagles and, yes, the Sixers. Philadelphia sports really are my passion (which bothers my girlfriend obviously. She hates all the ESPN, CSN, Flyers & Eagles texts that I am forever getting). I also love Penn State football, Big 5 Basketball and Liverpool Football club (so if anyone wants to talk futbol, it is another love of mine).

The s/n flyrsfrk05 was the one I chose in 5th grade when I made my AIM s/n. Philly sports has really been one of the biggest parts of my identify all my life. At college I am known as “the Philly fan” and I organize events for all the other Philly fans out here to watch the games together (gotta rep hard for the city I love, right?). I really like tradition but, I am thinking about changing my SBN s/n to something less childish.

Any other questions feel free to ask. Also, I am really looking forward to meeting some of you guys and gals if we are able to do some road trips together.

~Mitch

I agree with Mitch, great idea to bump this up (not sure why I never posted here in February).

I’m Ben (my username hopefully makes that obvious). I’m a fan of all Philly sports teams, especially the Flyers and the Phillies. Like Geoff, I’ve never really become attached to the Eagles like I have the Flyers or Phillies — I watch every game, but it doesn’t mean quite the same for some reason. And the Sixers? Well, I like Marc Zumoff (met him once; really nice guy), but that’s been about it since 2002 or 2003 or so. Quite frankly I’m looking forward to the Union’s inaugural season more than I am the Sixers’ upcoming season, and I’m not what you would call a soccer fan.

Favorite Flyers of this past decade include not Eric Lindros, Roman Cechmanek and Gagne.

Hopefully these sorts of things can help shore up BSH, because it’s not fun going to sites where you don’t want to regularly contribute because someone will inevitably yell at you and try to start an argument.

by Ben Feldman on Oct 10, 2009 12:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My name is Eric. I am almost 22 and go to Ohio University. I am an avid Flyers and Sixers fan. As a kid, I never really liked Ohio teams, but I liked certain athletes. These athletes lead me to be a fans of their teams, and 10-15 years later, here I am an avid fan. My Flyers fandom started with Eric Lindros (I loved Desjardins and Brindamour too). My Sixers fandom started with Allen Iverson. My NFL team is the Carolina Panthers (not b/c of any player, just adopted them when the joined the NFL in 95, in an effort to start with a new team) but I love the Dolphins too (Marino started that). My MLB team is the Oakland A’s (a little McGwire, a little Chavez, a little Giambi). Also, as far as Philly sports go, I love the Temple Owls (basketball more than football). John Chaney was/is a legend. I root for Michigan in college football, mostly because I’ve had Ohio State jammed down my throat for my whole life, and I’ve grown to resent them for it. I follow almost every sport in reality. Not WNBA or wrestling or boxing, but I like golf (Sergio Garcia), NASCAR (Jeff Gordon), tennis (I miss Andre Agassi), and soccer (Chicago Fire and the US National team).

I’ll pull for Carolina and Miami without shame. And I’ll keep an eye on Temple basketball. And I hold no dislike towards your golf, NASCAR, or soccer picks.

But really. Michigan? Of all the… and you… Michigan!??! Oh, and Geoff, don’t think you’re excluded from this!! I mean, if you really wanted to get under the skin of a Buckeye, you could’ve just picked any SEC school…

I’m kidding, of course. Good luck with Iowa today. That’ll be a far more exciting match-up than facing Indiana Eastern Illinois on ESPN Classic.

Well hey everybody! I’m Michael. I am 35 years old, I am divorced, and I live in a van down by the river.

Kidding of course, except for the part where I’m named Michael. (I choose to keep my personal life/identity private as it is not relevant here.)

As I say in my profile, music is my first love in life but the Flyers are as much a part of me as anything else. My first memory of my life is hearing my father yell at the Flyers, and thinking he was yelling at me. I started going to Saturday matinees against the Rangers and Islanders when I was 5. (My father had season’s tickets from the Flyers’ very first year, in Section 36, Row 5, seats 1 and 2.) In 1985 I was old enough to realize that they were good. I was also sad when Lindbergh died, as well as when we lost in the 1987 Finals.

Quite frankly though, I had a naive belief that the Flyers would always come through in the end. (In the 1989 playoffs, I was the only one I knew who felt that they would beat Washington and Pittsburgh, and I was right.) So reality was a cruel mistress in 1989-90, and 1990-91, when the team broke my heart. Once I knew they needed to rebuild, I was patient and stuck with them all through the years… from Ricci and Roussel to Lindros and LeClair; from Cechmanek and PJ Stock to Roenick and Primeau; from Leighton and Hamel to now, and through all of the coaches in between. Part of me still has that “trust” in the Flyers, so I expect to see a Cup before I die.

Other things about me – I am an educator in the wonderful world of City- and State-funded nonprofits, so as you can imagine I’m having tons of fun with the budget crisis. I’ve worked in real estate, in law firms, in audio engineering, as a classroom teacher, and as an animal handler/caretaker. I’ve been in eight billion bands (seemingly) but finally have my first official record done and will be shopping it around soon. (Lots of studio time for me this year.) And of course, I root for all of the Philly teams.

Thanks!

No deal yet, but I was recently accepted into ASCAP as an artist/songwriter and a publisher. So when I am signed I can get royalties. This will likely earn me an additional $1.00 income per year.

The record should be done after about 3 more sessions; we need to finish mixing and mastering. After that I’ll upload some samples somewhere (like Bandcamp) and hopefully sell it on eMusic too, but I guess that’s up to whatever small label will sign me.

My name’s Nick and I’m from northeast philly. I currently attend fordham university in new york where I’m surrounded by the enemy. It’s become a pastime to invade rival stadiums since going away, which always turns out interesting. Nothing better than going to jersey or ny and getting a win and letting everyone around you know about it. The same goes for the phils in queens, you can’t beat it.

I’m a huge fan of all the hometown teams, although the 6ers are to a lesser extent. On top of watching the flyers, I also try to play a lot of roller hockey.

Besides sports, I listen to a lot of music(predominantly rock) and don’t mind the occasional movie. Another interest of mine is writing, which I’m trying to turn into a career in some way.

Jeremy Here –
Moved to West Chester PA in 1984 when I was 11 & started following the Flyers and playing Ice Hockey.

I went to U of Pittsburgh in the 90’s – and visited the Igloo as often as possible when the Legion of Doom came to town. Played Juniors and Mens leagues in Western PA all throughout the 90s.

Moved to San Diego in 2001 and now I watch as many Flyers games as I can on NHL Gamecenter. Big time Eagles fan as well. Baseball is okay, and I have never liked basketball. Haven’t played any hockey since moving out West. Trying to get my legs back off the ice – so I can get back on the ice.

My favorite hockey players growing up were Dave Poulin, Peter Zezel, Hexy, Rick Tocchet, Scott Mellanby and then in the 90’s, The Legion of Doom, Roenick, Recchi, Theo Fleury and oddly enough – Geoff Sanderson and Pierre Turgeon. Post 2000, I would say Roenick, Primeau, Gagne and Richards are my favorite flyers of this era.

I hate all Pittsburgh teams, and really need the Flyers to win a cup to shut up all of my friends from college

I have been reading this blog since the middle of last season and thoroughly enjoy being able to keep up with my Flyers from so far away. There see to be a lot of knowledgable Flyers fans here, so I look forward to all your posts. Travis, Ben, Geoff – you guys do a great job, keep it up!

Was born in upstate NY which is why I am a Bills fan, Moved to Allentown in the mid ’80’s and started playing hockey this is how I became a fan of the Flyers. I currently live in AZ and the sports here is nothing like back east. Although I do get to see the Flyers this year when they play the ’yotes. I got the center ice package just to watch the Flyers although when they are palying the caps I am stuck listening to their commentator who sounds like ernie and I have it muted the whole time.

I’ve been a Flyers fan since I was 8 and my dad was a Phillies season ticket holder at the Vet before the ‘94 strike, so those are the sports I love passionately. I also played ice hockey for several years, which is uncommon for a girl in this neck of the woods. My favorite player as a kid was Eric Desjardins, and the recent years it’s been Gagne and I’m getting a soft spot for Giroux. It’s all about effort for me, so any player who still plays his game even when the puck bounces aren’t going his way or we’re down by a lot is alright in my book. I’m very fortunate to live half a mile from the practice facility, so it’s nice to be able to head over when the mood strikes. I’m very happy to bleed Flyers Orange, and I have succeeding in getting my fiance to prefer watching hockey over football (we’re both still Eagles fans, but I’ve gotten him to start to truly understand hockey, yay!). Loving the good conversation and happy to have found this site, so you guys as a collective group are awesome :)

Hi, my name is Mike. And I’ve been a Flyers fan since they faced the Oilers in the playoffs all those years ago. The image of Hextall going after Gretzky imprinted on y young and fragile mind and I’ve been hooked since. I am 35, married and am Philly Born and Bred.

Hockey is my favorite sport, followed by Football. I don;lt get center ice package becuase I’d never get anything done around the house. I love the sport and will watch any game I can. I lurked around this site for a while before joining and posting. And I’m glad to be here.

My name is Steve. Born in Abington because there’s no hospital in Hatboro, grew up in Florida. I’m 26, and working on an MBA (have bachelor’s degrees in economics and theology). I grew up playing baseball, as one of Zack Greinke’s catchers in Little League. Currently working on getting back in shape, since I’d like to play in one of the beer leagues around here, but I’m still recovering from a torn ACL. Mom’s family has been in the Philly area since the 1750s, so I’m a Flyers, Phils, and Eagles fan. For basketball, my loyalty’s with the Magic, since I was in Orlando when they were formed.

I don’t think we ever radar gunned his pitches, but I definitely wore extra padding under the catcher’s mitt when he threw (spare batting gloves and such), because his stuff stung like nobody else’s.

My name is Ben (shocker), and I live in Washington DC. I went to the University of Michigan, the hockey highlights of which included being able to watch games on CBC, an oft-#1 ranked school team, and two Flyers games at the Joe, where the Flyers haven’t won for a couple decades.

All Philly here (Eagles, Phils, Flyers, Sixers (they still play right?). Born in NE Philly and moved out to Reading when I was pretty young (Go R-Phils). Went to Pitt from 90-94 so I hate everything Pitt Sports except Pitt (but Wannstedt sucks and may be the worst in game coach in NCAA history).

Living in NY area now and have perfected my long-standing disdain of the Yankees, Giants, Devils and Rangers.

I try and have fun but can get pretty emotional after losses (especially Flyers in playoffs) so if I ever piss you off let me know. Pretty much everything I say has some tongue in cheek to it.

Good idea Travis.

If anyone ever runs into Scott Stephens give me a shout. I still want to show him what the difference is between a clean check and an elbow.

Im a HUGE fan of all 4 Philly teams, but my love for the Sixers has started to fade since the NBA is turning into a pile of shit.

Any league where two teams at .500 and a team four games under .500 can get into the playoffs is a league that does not get much respect from me. And in the West, the drop off is incredible — top 9 teams are well over .500, and the other 6 are so bad they make the Nationals look decent. Makes you appreciate the tight races we’ve seen over the past few years in the NHL.

Part of that’s bad ownership/management, and part of it’s the way rankings are done – instead of the W-L-OT system of the NHL, basketball’s using a W-L system. Using a W-L system, last year’s NHL playoff teams (ignoring the “top team in each division” rule):

East:
1 Boston 53-29
2 New Jersey 51-31
3 Washington 50-32
4 Pittsburgh 45-37
5 Carolina 45-37
6 Philadelphia 44-38
7 NY Rangers 43-39
8 3 teams at 41-41 (Montreal, Buffalo, Florida)

West:
1 San Jose 53-29
2 Detroit 51-31
3 Chicago 46-36
4 Calgary 46-36
5 Vancouver 45-37
6 Anaheim 42-30
7 St Louis 41-41
8 Columbus 41-41

Three teams at .500 would make the playoffs (and two eliminated because of tiebreakers).

Been a fan since I moved to Medford area ‘85. Used to be the only kid in New Orleans with a hockey sweater in the 70s. I go Flyers/Phils/Birds/ and now Union in that order. If we had a jai lai team I’d prefer watching them to the Sixers.

Went to school in NY and would roll with my Mike Quick jersey and hang my head in shame as our aces were Don Carman and Bruce Ruffin. Loved Kevin Dineen, in a purely healthy platonic way of course, the injunction was a misunderstanding. Big fan of Propp, Howe, remember the Brindy trade with St Louis.

I’m in a 20 team fantasy hockey league/cult, so probably spend too much time watching hockey. But it’s good to watch other teams every now and then.

Pete, forever city resident, went to Trinity College and Drexel, started watching Flyers hockey during the great Flyers vs. Edmonton finals days. And YES, I have been a Penguins fan for over 20 years … but the style of Flyers hockey has always seemed more familiar to me. Never played (can’t skate backwards), but was a rugby player, so you get the idea. I desperately wish Sid wasn’t such a nancy sometimes, so I definitely enjoy watching Mike Richards come onto the ice, swipe a puck after a crushing hit, and waft it past the opposing goalie. My mother still whines about losing Brind’Amour too. And there’s nothing better than looking down the bench and seeing the Chief in a tie!!!

I live in central VA and grew up outside of Philadelphia, went to college in Buffalo, so I’ve gotten to see a lot of amazing hockey.

I’m a high school English teacher and I run an after school street hockey club. Bringing the great game to central VA! Our only rules are no slap shots and you can’t check kids, but you can check teachers. We usually get about 15-20 people out. Lots of bandwagon Caps fans here, but you’d be surprised, there are a few Flyers fans too, all transplants. I teach with a guy from Canada who is a big Canadiens fan and we pass the ball back and forth across the hallway during the school day. We keep the records up on our white board. Go Flyers!

Im John, 19(and have the worst bday, Dec 28. Right after Christmas and the Flyers are always away) i grew up in South west Philly, but live in Narberth now. I go to school at PSU DelCo, hope to hit Main soon. I’ve been a Flyers fan as long as i can think of. I love the Eagle and Phills too, but not nearly as much as i love the Flyers. Im always at games, been to 4 home games already, plus 2 preseason games. I played in a league between the ages of 10-16. I was a defenseman, but led the league in assist and points twice, and played against Bobby Ryan when i was 13(He deeked the ish outta me for a goal too, thats when i knew he was gonna be good) I gotta say my all time favorite player is John LeClair. I guess i gotta say im a fan because, no matter how mad this team makes me(which is a lot0 im always ready for the next game and never think that we are the underdogs no matter who we play.

Hello everyone

My name is Matthew, I have been a Flyers fan for sometime now, ever since John Leclair was traded to Philly. I’m a Canadian and still live in Canada. It sucks because I can’t go to any game live, but I don’t miss a game on Center Ice, even if I have to record the game and watch it later. My wife and I are planning on making a trip to Philadelphia in the next couple of yrs, so we can see a game live. I have been reading this site for awhile now and I decided to join, so I can talk Flyers hockey.

Let go Flyers :)

Stu – 44. Live on the SC coast and have been in the Carolinas most of my life. I catch the Flyers on Center Ice and take advantage when they visit Raleigh (got to the opener this season!). Been to one game at the Spectrum in ‘94 or ’95 and one game at Wachovia in ’02 or ’03 – memory is bad. I play in a men’s league here in town, picked up the game at the young age of 38 – started playing after meeting bunch of hockey dads at the rink while my son was practicing. I’ve been a Flyers fan since I knew about hockey, probably since around ‘77 or so… Not much access to hockey in the Carolinas back then, what I could see usually was about the BSB’s. I took to them instantly.

Sometimes I wish the Flyers didn’t try to play like the Broad Street Bullies.

As much as we’d all like to see that go away for a little bit, way too much of the fanbase depends on that “style.” If you’re ever on this side of the world and go to a Flyers game… the other fans around you make that crystal clear.

Been a Flyer fan since I started playing hockey at 5 (35 years ago). I live in Kelowna, BC Canada. I don’t see too many games, though TSN up here shows a few games once in awhile. I did see them in the Cup final in Edmonton in 1985, actually sat with a lot of the Flyers parents and sibs at the game (game 5 that the Oilers won the cup in – we still miss you Pelle!). All time favourite flyer is Peter Forsberg (why Lindros, why?!), current favourite flyer is Mike Richards.

I live in Schuylkill County, hence the name. I graduated from King’s college in 2006 with a double major. I work with a Mental Health field which is nice because they give me a laptop computer with internet so i can browse the web basically all day. I’m a diehard Flyers and Phillies fan. I basically never miss a Flyers game and attend around two or three games per year. I played roller hockey when i was younger and also in college. There weren’t any ice rinks around when i was younger so I was SOL. I also love college hockey and was at the Frozen 4 in DC last year. What a finish

Yo,

I’m a die hard flyers fan, devoted eagles fan, passionate phillies phan, and a fairweather sixers fan (welcome back #3). I’m 25 years old and have been a huge hockey fan my entire life. Since leaving philly I’ve managed to have season tickets with the rochester americans, nashville predators, and now washington capitals (b-school at GW). Nothing compares to flyers hockey. A part of me enjoyed Carcillo’s sucker punch on Bradley b/c I’m worried 20 years from now fighting may be outlawed from the game. I’m behind Laviolette all the way and I hope he can keep the ‘bullies’ together with his fast-paced style of coaching.

I have center Ice so I watch at least 75 regular season Flyers games each year. Hello, my name is Brandon…and I’m a Flyers fan. (can’t believe no one has done the bad AA meeting introduction joke yet — maybe because it’s bad :P)

Anyway, sorry I didn’t see this thread earlier. I have been a frequenter of this site since Yahoo! introduced it to me. I’ve posted maybe a couple times about very unimportant things, but usually I just like to read MarioD’s posts and then witness the backlash and arguing that inevitably comes after them. :)

My sporting loyalties are varied because I was raised in the middle of PA, in York County. Therefore, for whatever reason, my attentions were torn in 3 different directions — to the west and Steelers football, to the south and Orioles baseball, and to the east and Flyers hockey and Villanova college basketball (I don’t care for pro ball)

Specifically, the story of why I’m a Flyer fan starts in college. I really never had any interest in hockey until then, but when I got there, a lot of my friends were hockey fans. So one night during the playoffs, when I was probably supposed to be doing a paper, I decided that whoever won the game that my friends were watching was going to be the team that I would root for from there on out. Then, about 7 hours later, thanks to Keith Primeau, I finally had a team to root for, and the Flyers and hockey have been my favorite team and sport since. Thank goodness — I don’t think I could have lived with myself if the Pens had won that game. :)

Tim from Calgary, AB, CAN,

I have been a Flyers fan since the early 80’s. My next door neighbour who was 10 years older than me, used to drag me out and strap the goalie gear on me(complete with the Orange and Black #31 jersey), and shoot frozen tennis balls at me until I was black and blue. We would talk Flyers hockey non-stop, and he totally idolized Pelle. We were both crushed when we learned about his death.

The first Flyers game I ever saw live, was at the Calgary Saddledome, against the home town Flames. Tim Kerr came down the off wing and blasted a shot which deflected off the defensemans stick and hit Mike Vernon square in the mask. They carried Vernon off on a stretcher!! It is still one of my most favorite hockey memories.
