Gameday: Lineup finally healthy, ready for Bruins
Philadelphia Flyers (33-18-10, 76 pts) at Boston Bruins (42-12-9, 93 pts)
TD Banknorth Garden - 7:00 PM EST - Boston, MA
TV: CSN HD, NESN HD
Radio: 610 WIP, XM 204
This is the open game thread.
Behind Enemy Lines: Stanley Cup of Chowder
It's been a long time since we've been able to say this, but the Philadelphia Flyers are completely healthy heading into tonight's game with the Boston Bruins. No, we're not counting Derian Hatcher.
Kimmo Timonen, who's been battling the flu, returns to the lineup for the first time in over a week. Danny Briere is in his second game back since returning from groin surgery, and he'll look to build on an encouraging performace against New Jersey on Sunday.
Claude Giroux has been recalled from the Phantoms after being sent down due to cap problems. With the return of all of these guys, here is the Flyers lineup tonight.
Gagne - Richards - Knuble
Hartnell - Carter - Lupul
Upshall - Briere - Giroux
Cote - Powe - Asham
Timonen - Parent
Coburn - Carle
Alberts - Jones
Could this be the final time we see this lineup? The trade deadline is, of course tomorrow and rumors are flying everywhere. Honestly though, as excited/nervous as I am for tomorrow, I'm just as excited for this game in an hour. I'm pumped to see this fully healthy lineup in action for, really, the first time all season. Especially that third line (which won the poll last week, btw).
As for the Bruins, they're probably pissed. If you missed the end of their game against the Caps on Saturday, have a look. Alex Semin blasted a shot from just across the red line and it somehow beat Tim Thomas to give DC the 4-3 win. Yeah, I'd be upset after that too.
Between the Pipes: Antero Niittymaki will go for the Flyers tonight, and that's probably a virtue of his shutout hockey (which came in relief of Biron) back on February 7th. Niitty turned away 22 shots as the Flyers went on to win in overtime.
Manny Fernandez was in goal for that game, and he's likely to go for tonight's game as well. He's only played in two games since that night and both were losses -- one in overtime against Nashville on Valentines Day and a regulation loss against Tampa Bay on the 22nd where he allowed four goals on 18 shots.
Questions To Answer
- How is the chemistry between Briere, Giroux, and Upshall?
- Do the Bruins regret starting Manny Fernandez?
- Do the Flyers regret starting Antero Niittymaki?
- Any odd healthy scratches before the game (meaning a trade is imminent)?
- Do the Flyers learn their lesson from last time these teams met by playing a full 60 minutes?
7:00 PM. Go Flyers.

Which Flyers?
Which Flyers will we see tonight? The ones that beat Washington last Tuesday or the ones that phoned it in against the Devils on Sunday? Hopefully the former. With only around 20 games left, we have to step things up to keep our 4 seed and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Go Flyers!

Same reason why I can’t post links in the game threads anymore… sucks. But it makes sense on the NHL’s part.

Agreed, as long as they don’t do what MLB does. They take it too far and charge for audio feeds. I think that’s ridiculous.

I dont mind the MLB audio package. it’s only $15 for the year. It’s very affordable. It’s the TV packages that are so expensive.
by chillicothe20 on Mar 3, 2009 7:07 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed, I paid for it before I had a Slingbox… but now I don’t deal with any of these packages. It’s nice.
I just think its absurd to pay for what comes free over the airwaves.

by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 3, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I’d love to see the replay. My guess is Hartnell was talking, Chara got upset and hit him, and they gave Hartnell the gate because they missed the original infraction. The penalty to Hartnell was slashing, not sure how that works.

Lupul has played well but Jones really hasn’t. I used to like the guy a lot but now I really won’t mind seeing him gone by dinner tomorrow.
Swing by The Flyer Frequent if you have nothing better to do.
In the first period, Jones got caught in the net by skating into it, then somehow got the puck, lost it in his skates, and allowed the Bruins guy to skate in and take it while he just stood there. And all of that happened in about nine seconds.

From Christy at Winging It In Motown...
He was hit and fell awkwardly into the boards and immediately grabbed his neck.
Fortunately, he was moving so that’s a good sign and the Wings report that he never lost consciousness which is wonderful news. He is being taken to the hospital as a precaution especially this was his first game back from a sore neck.

I definitely agree. I’m a huge Boucher fan, to this day. I wrote about it in response to Ed Moran’s, maybe, column on the rotating door of Flyers goalies. His third year he won the job back, but got hurt and never was given another chance, even though Roman Cechmanek was a psychopath.
On him given the reins: He’s having a great year, with a GAA under 2 and a Save around .92, but he hasn’t been a starter in this league since 02-03. I’ll stick with Niitty.

Kings/Jackets game is crazy…5-4 CBJ. The Kings scored three goals in two minutes in second. Shows we need to be careful only up two.
