Kyle McLaren to Flyers for a sixth round pick

photo via CBC.ca
Defenseman Kyle McLaren joins the Flyers from the San Jose Sharks. Philly gives up a sixth round pick in the deal.
The 31-year-old has not played in the NHL this season, playing just 17 games with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL since being placed on waivers to make room for other players in October.
He is a big stay-at-home guy listed at 6 foot 4, 230 pounds. He's known for his body checking, as seen here and here.
His cap hit is listed at 2.5 million this season and he's unrestricted in July. Eeek.
This is looking at the bright end of the spectrum, but McLaren could be real big for the Flyers in the playoffs. He brings a Hatcher like presence without the bum knees, not to mention a ton of experience.
My question is this: where does McLaren fit in the lineup? Jones or Alberts would have to go, here. UPDATE with an answer to that question. McLaren will be on the Phantoms and is purely a depth guy at this point.

At a certain point, acquiring all these prototypical Flyers gets really old. I know we have an identity and I’m all about being the team no one wants to play, but occassionally it would be nice if this team wen out and made the deal that really blew everyone away.
You know like, not trading for another fighter and a guy who hasnt played a game in the NHL this year and makes $2.5 Mill. Just sayin’.

Is this what we got the deadline extension for? This guy?

I’m actually just completly baffled right now. I’m at a lose for words. Did Holmgren miss Hatcher and Downie or something?

thank god
we traded upshall (and a 2nd rounder) to clear up some cap room so we could sign a 2.5 mil, 31 year old defenseman.
BRING ON LORD STANLEY!
but seriously, WTF?!

Not fully satisfied
Although I am happy we didnt sit back and watch the deadline go by, I am miffed that Morris and J-Bo werent part of our moves. I hate to see Scottie go, but I think we come out a minorly better team. I just hope chemistry isnt an issue.

relax people
Does anybody here remember how valuable Hatcher was in the playoffs last season? If we picked up this guy in such a way that keeps us under the cap it would be an excellent move. He is clearly an insurance policy. And if it required upshall to move, I’m ok with that.
Visions of 2004 with Sami Kaps playing D, and our injury troubles last year rush to my head…we weren’t prepared depth wise then. We are now.
I think we were smart in not making any “big” moves, we finally get our full compliment of players out there last night and we HANDLED the bruins. This team is good.

I would agree...
if upshall wasn’t involved…..him + a 2nd rounder made me mad..
About McLaren…..I actually like him…that was a good trade
Not the best trade…but good (6th rounder…fair)
We needed the depth…and this guy can hit….
The problem was the other trade…

forgive me but how was hatcher valuable in the playoffs last year? sure he played big minutes but those minutes were almost equal to minutes he spent in the penalty box. he was noticably slower than every single player on the ice and he kept taking restraining penalties as a result of it.
and as an above poster stated, i too am tired of the prototypical flyers players that we keep bringing in. for years bob clarke refused to understand that it isnt 1975 anymore and that big “rugged” (fancy word for slow) players arent the way to go. while holmgren has really made progress in bringing on skilled players, todays moves seem like a return to the flyers trade habits of old.
so what happens with McClaren? correct me if im wrong but his cap hit is too high for him to play in the NHL…do we stick him on the phantoms in case of an injury? or does this mean randy jones is about to leave town…if the latter is true than its not a bad move at all

Retarded.
That is all.
Let's go Flyers!

I have to keep telling myself that the Phils didn’t make big moves, but chemistry-related small moves at the deadline, and it all worked out pretty well for them.
Lots of teams make big moves at the deadline and (Hossa to the Pens last year comes to mind) and don’t win the Cup.
Got to dance with the guy who brung ya!

A poster on the 700 Level pointed out that Homer has been really bad at managing the salary cap (but pretty good at rebuilding the team) and I couldn’t agree more. Essentially, the Flyers lost Upshall, Vaananen, Metropolit and a 2nd round pick in the last week in return for Carcillo and McClaren and we’re still up against the cap.
by doubleh on Mar 4, 2009 4:56 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
well... and in return for Briere, as well
Metropolit wasn’t anything we don’t have in AHL, Vaananen ditto (plus a relatively expensive ditto). Those are understandable. Still… that 2nd and Upshall hurt.
Agreed, Holmgren is bad at cap management. We shouldn’t have signed Danny Briere to that contract, I guess hindsight is 20/20 but it’s still a pretty ridiculous contract. Ditto TImonen, even. It’s money well spent, but it’s also money that is prohibitive in that we can’t spend it when we really need it.

I disagree entirely in regards to Kimmo. He is the anchor of this defense and when he was out of the lineup, the defense was subpar. He’s 9th in the league in salary for this year, below Dan Boyle, Ed Jovanovski, and Wade Redden, and making slightly more than Chris Pronger and Brian Rafalski. I think his play warrants being paid in that company. Money that is prohibiting spending when we need it is Lupul and Jones. Lupul is getting bumped to 4.25 for the next four years and Jones is at 2.75. Jones does not deserve anywhere near that, since he’s just as good as Nate Guenin. And Lupul will be the ninth nighest paid right wing in the league next year, above Chechoo, Dustin Brown, Ales Hemsky, Patrick Kane, Milan Hejduk, and our own Scott Hartnell.

Timonen is the most underrated player on the Flyers and one of the most underrated players in the Eastern Conference, if you ask me.

I’m willing to give this a shot. I always look forward to seeing new players in Flyers orange and black, if only to see how they gel with the established parts. I will miss Upshall too, but I understand why we had to let him go.
More than anything I’m glad this whole thing is over, and I’m confident in my team going forward. Very confident even, especially given that they only gave up Upshall. I do, however, think they’ll be making a push for JBo in the offseason.

Please explain
why did we have to let him go? I mean this genuinely, I still don’t get it

Paul Holmgren’s press conference will be on Daily News Live in a minute. Looking forward to that.

Panaccio says Flyers don’t even have a 2nd round pick to give up next year so they are still trying to clarify what we gave up for Carcillo.

I think that’s an easy one to figure out… probably just not this years second rounder.

He thought maybe the 2nd rounder might be coming to Philly…I think everyone’s confused by this trade. He didn’t think this improved the team at all and thought it likely made it worse. I guess take what he says with a grain of salt (but I generally like his reporting and analysis).

Yeah, I could see that. And it would make more sense. But at the same time I’d find it tough to believe that it would go this long without clarification from either team or the league.

It’s a 2011 2nd round pick and Upshall for Carcillo per Homer. No 3rd deal in the works. JBo was too costly a deal.

carcillo will be in a battle with cote for the enforcer role next year, i like cote’s spirt, but he just blows in fights, this new guy can actually WIN them. as for Mclaren, more depth on D, is any of our starters go down, the cap would suit his salery needs so he can play, plus hes gone after this year anyways. do i think this team can win this year, maybe, it’ll be hard and i personally dont think so, but next year, with sbisa and JVR in the linup, yeah deff have a great chance, plus we free up at least $10 mill in the offseason, who knws what we can bring in.

6ft 200 lb fighter? Cmon, he’s going to get clocked sometime and he’ll be another Cote. So what you’re saying is that we needed to give away Upshall + a 2nd round pick so that we can be prepared next year to dump Cote from the 4th line?
