Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Question For Ya'll

Alright, so over the course of the season, a few of the blogs here at SBN have done what they call "road trips" during game threads. We're planning on trying it out for Game 1 tomorrow night, but I wanted to run it by you guys first.

Basically, the idea is to join up with the folks over at Pensburgh for the game thread.

  • During the first period, we'll head over to Pensburgh and invade their game thread.
  • During the second period, we'll host the game thread here at BSH with the folks from Pensburgh.
  • During the third (and OT if it happens), they go home to cry in their drinks while we celebrate victory.

The only rules are to keep it clean and act civil. Mild profanity is usually allowed here but with this format, it won't be allowed. No f-bombs or anything. Pretty much the only rule. It should be a lot of fun, but I before completely agreeing to it with the Pensburgh guys I wanted to make sure you guys are cool with it.

Vote in the poll, the result in the morning will determine if this goes down.

Not a fan. I am stuck out here in Pittsburgh for college so I get enough of the undereducated, inbred, white trash that populates Western PA. They think that the Penguins’ franchise actually rivals the Flyers’ in success. Plus, they actually defend Crosby. Its not like they like him but at the same time know he is a pussy (if that were the case I might actually listen their opinion). They honestly think that he is a good captain. Their blindness truly perplexes me to no end. Thus, I have no respect for anything a Penguins fan says and have no interest in listening to their babble about Diving Cindy and Frankenmalkin . . .

Trust me, after talking to one of them you will feel infinity dumber let alone joining them in the game thread.

Before I start, know that I just graduated from Pitt and therefore am well versed in Pittsburgh fandom. I agree, it’s absolutely ridiculous. However, I (reluctantly) feel the need to disagree.

Your characterization must be called a stereotype, for that is a gross generalization. Yes, a lot of Western Pennsylvania is undereducated, but please leave the inbred white trash in West Virginia (Morgantown, specifically) where it belongs. Pittsburgh is a fantastic city with plenty of excellent, intelligent people. It is only when discussing their sports franchises that one begins to grow a strong distaste and disrespect for Pittsburghers. But even then, their passion is obvious and rivals the passion of Philadelphians. The difference, and I’ve complained about this to no end, is that Pittsburgh hates Philadelphia. Legitimately hates Philadelphia. From the Eagles to the Phillies to the Flyers. And the only one that makes sense is the Flyers since they are division rivals. Philadelphia, meanwhile, hates the Mets, Cowboys, Giants, Devils, Rangers, and Penguins and whoever they are playing that day. Notice a similarity? Division rivals. I chalk this up to getting less attention in the state, but it could be many reasons. Either way, it’s irrational.

I am perfectly okay with them thinking the Penguins rival the Flyers in success. They won back to back Cups, so did we. They did it 15 years after we did, which goes in their favor. They also have a long history of success, just like us but not as sustained. They also have a long list of prominent NHL stars (Mullen, Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby, Malkin to name a few) just like us. They have a legitimate claim to success.

Next, Crosby is insanely talented. He is clearly the leader of that team. Without knowing any locker room, who are we (or they) to say he’s a terrible Captain? What makes a good Captain? You know it when you see it, but that mainly involves leading your team, taking responsibility, protecting teammates, and setting the tone. While he sucks at fighting and whines a lot, he knows it’s his team and he acts like it. Noone outside of that locker room can say he sucks as a Captain.

Lastly, I have plenty of friends from college who are Pittsburgh fans. Almost all of my friends who are Penguins fans know just as much about hockey as I do and can have a very strong conversation on hockey. You must be hanging out with the wrong people. Besides, you don’t make your point well by using the wrong word (infinity rather than infinitely) while calling them dumb.

This was a rather harsh rebuke, I know, but you are not helping to create an intelligent dialog between two fan bases by using generalizations to complain about them. Philadelphia has a lot of stupid, blindly loyal fans too. And we have to hear about it. Some of it I’m proud of, some I’m not. Either way, every city has this. Hopefully Pensburgh has rational members willing to engage in friendly banter and trash talking. I for one think it will be fun.

Besides, when I went to a Flyers game in Pittsburgh, the worst they had to shout at me was “Boooo!” and give a thumbs down. I was disappointed. Not one called me gay. Not one suggested I had inappropriate relations with my mother. Not even a single derogatory word about my team. I’m not afraid of them. At least we throw beer. At $6.50 a bottle, THAT’S hardcore.

Most of PA hates Philadelphia

A childhood friend of mine moved from Philadelphia to Lebanon Valley (not too far from Hershey). When he got there and went to school, all he heard about was how “The Devil lives in Philadelphia” and all of this other nonsense. A friend of a friend got married in some really small town out past Chambersburg and you better believe I kept my mouth shut about being from Philadelphia. So it’s not just Western PA… just get far enough past Eagleville and everyone hates us.

I’m down with this idea, by the way. Should be fun.

Alright Shagg,
The funny thing is that I agree with you on most of your points. I was deliberately generalizing and stereotyping Pittsburgh and it’s fans. As with any city, there are ignorant fans and fans who passionately love their team. I know this and Pittsburgh is no different.

So, thanks for the “rebuke” . . . I guess, but know that I was mostly being harsh in my hatred for everything that is Pittsburgh. Seeing as I spend close to half of the year living near Pittsburgh I do not apologize for insulting the City and it’s sports because I am forced to be around it so much (if I have to listen to someone talk about the damn steel industry one more time . . .) and feel that I have earned the right. My comment was intentional as I am an extremely biased Philadelphian who deeply loves his Philly sports teams and everything that carries a Philadelphia label. This pride has been increased after being out near Pittsburgh for two years and receiving, what I believe to be, unwarranted hostility from people who hate Philadelphia for reasons that I do not understand, as you stated. I have developed a strong dislike for Pittsburgh sports – a dislike that would never have been created if I were not attending a college near Pittsburgh. I mean, I even root against the Pirates. Now that is saying something right?

So now that I know you patrol this blog I will watch and limit my posts in hopes of avoiding “gross generalizations” and grammatical errors. I just did not expect to receive just strong opposition to hating Pittsburgh on a Flyers blog . . . my bad?

by Mitchell Green on Apr 14, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I made another boo-boo in the last line. Its should say “receive such strong opposition.” There, that should save you the hassle Shagg . . .

by Mitchell Green on Apr 14, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

And I agree with almost all of what you said. I can see why you said what you said and feel how you do, I still disproportionately hate the Steelers. You hating the Pirates does show me the amount of shit you have received for being there. Especially since Pittsburgh talks about the Pirates as if they left the city 15 years ago. I simply defended Pittsburgh because I think this could be a great idea and if people honestly think all Penguins fans are bumbling idiots, the cross blog might not work. Nothing I said was personally directed at you, especially because I know what living in Pittsburgh is like.

Lastly, isn’t it ridiculous how the city thinks their players can do absolutely no wrong? They literally think Ben Roethlisberger is Jesus and Bill Cowler is God. I’m just amazed that Philly wants their athletes to be grounded (we boo Ryan Howard for Christ’s sake) while Pittsburgh thinks theirs should be anointed.

Haha I see you and I have very similar experiences. I know you weren’t attacking me personally and I think that its perfectly fine that you challenged my comment. As Philadelphia sports fans we are held to a higher standard. I mean, we are the BEST fans in the world right? Thanks, and I am glad to hear that others feel similarly about Pittsburgh and that I am not the only one that is utterly baffled by their twisted version of fanhood.

Lastly, isn’t it ridiculous how the city thinks their players can do absolutely no wrong?

YES! This is my biggest frustration. I feel like Pittsburgh (and Western PA) are in a small bubble and do not focus on the rest of the sporting world. If they did they would know that Sidney Crosby is a pansy and Ben Roethlisberger is a dumbass. Maybe I have such an issue with this because I am from Philadelphia and that, to me, no athlete is faultless. As good as Ryan Howard is I will still criticize him for striking out. We all will. That is just how we are as fans. People can’t fathom why we as Philadelphians are so critical of our sports teams.

You are probably right. The cross blog thing is a good idea and I don’t want to take away from it. I guess I am opposed just because everyday is a cross blog for me and I am thoroughly aggravated and fed up with Pittsburgh sports fans. The last thing I want is to read their comments haha. Obviously, most of the people on this blog do not share my experience so maybe the cross blog will enlighten then to what I am talking about. Thanks for the debate Shagg ;)

i'm at pitt, flyers fan.

let’s do this, we can even get into primanti brothers and their subpar sandwich making abilities. majority of the fanbase is people who didn’t like hockey and like hockey and bought a crosby jersey, and can’t name the captain of the team before crosby was drafted and limited knowledge. until someone along the line mentioned, “oh here’s the second best player to ever play, lemieux.” to their credit, the sparse diehard fans live in the outskirts and probably can’t afford the games as much. [the city’s economy is terrible. eastern pa is probably the only reason the city hasnt collapsed on itself.. no one wants to live in a city with a crybaby as captain and is cloudy all the time, superbowl or not.

WOW

agreed. Primanti Bros sandwiches f’n suck. It’s just a sandwich, it’s not a cheesesteak. It’s a fucking sandwich! Fuck!

Sorry, had to get it outta my system now so that I won’t do it during the date party.

Couldn’t agree with you more Kolparty.
While Pittsburgh does have their diehards that followed the Penguin’s poor excuse for hockey over the 7 or 8 years (pre-Crosby), I feel like most present day fans (and the ones that I see constantly popping up) are nothing more then recent bandwagon jumpers. Making the playoffs and having the NHL poster boy on your team definitely helps that.

Its frustrating as a Flyers fan that has been following the team his entire conscious life to have Penguins fans who think they are diehard hassle me when the tag of their Crosby jersey is still hanging from the back collar. You get what I mean? I often ask Pens fans that give me a hard time how long they have been a fan for. They kinda just babble and stutter. They honestly they think that they compare to Philadelphia, when in every respect they are and will always be nothing more then second best. Just because they beat is in ECF last year means little to the big picture. We beat them in 1999-2000 thanks to Keith Primeau’s 5OT game winner, but that was way too long ago. None of the present fans were aware that hockey existed then which is exactly my point.

Every city has bandwagon jumping (yes, Philadelphia included) but Pittsburgh, I feel like way more then most, is an unbelievably flighty city when it comes to sports. When you’re good they love you. But when you’re bad you are the excuse to make jokes. Yes, I think that if the Steelers sucked for 5 or 6 years the “Steelers Nation” would diminish too.

[Oh, and Primanti Bros. “sandwiches” do suck. Which is why whenever me and my friends go there I just get pizza . . .]

I'm refusing to vote

on the grounds that I don’t know where I’ll be when I watch the game tomorrow. However, should I be at home and near a computer, I’ll gladly post wherever you tell me to, good sir!

I'll be in Cleveland

for the Sixers finale tomorrow night, but Go Flyers!!!

I could definitely see doing the road trip for other playoff games.
