ECQF Game 1, Flyers at Penguins: Game Thread
Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins, Apr 15, 2009 7:00 PM EDT
Tonight's goaltenders:
In case you've missed it, we're "road tripping" for the game thread tonight.
- In the first period, we're going to invade the thread over at Pensburgh.
- For the second period, we're coming back here, to be joined by the Pensburgh folks.
- In the third, they'll go home and we'll stick around here. This thread will open at the end of the first period.
Keep it clean over on enemy turf. We know Pittsburgh smells funny but I hear they're sensitive about it. Oh, and for the love of God, don't let them outnumber us.
LET'S GO FLYERS!

The 70s? It’s not like the team’s demeanor has changed any. I thought getting rid of Downie would solve that problem, but then you go and bring in Carcillo. rolls eyes

so i jinxed the flyers earlier today by saying they had done a great job in cutting down on penalties…i mentioned scott hartnell in particular
we’ll be fine though. while pittsburgh had the upper hand in that first period it wasnt shear domination. I thought we god a good forecheck going and we had a few good chances. they scored their goal on a power play that never should have happened (yes that was a total BS call. all the other ones were legit, but if thats hooking then their should be a hooking call every 3 seconds in every single NHL game
I thought the chances picked up toward the back end of that period, too. There was definitely a slow start (what else is new) but I expect the second to be much better

Sure!
I’m a jaded Philadelphia fan. More importantly, I’ve watched hockey for a long time. The unexpected always happens during the playoffs – no matter the team.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Over (potentially) 28 games, you’re not going to see a ton of variation on the regular season. Some, sure, but it’s not like that much will be different.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
Slow the game down
The Flyers can’t get into a run and gun with Pittsburgh here. They’ve got to slow things down and clog up the middle like they did in March.
They also can’t let their emotions get the best of them. I think Richards got called for his hit at the end of the period there. They’ve got to calm down.
And Biron needs to calm down too. Fleury is very composed right now. Biron was fine until that lousy goal went in.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
For the Center Ice people here:
Tax Day has a bright side for hockey fans. Starting today, April 15, and through the second round of the playoffs, subscribers to the NHL Center Ice out-of-market package will receive replays of same day games. In this new enhancement which is free to customers, the NHL Center Ice package will re-air each current day’s game beginning approximately one hour after the live game ends so that fans can see games they might have missed. Each game will replay in its entirety and will repeat continuously overnight and the next day, on the same channel, until the following day’s live games begin.
The "Replay Game" feature means that there will be approximately 4-5 replays for single, scheduled games. Live games scheduled back-to-back will be replayed in that same order, so that there will be approximately 2-3 replays before game-time the following day. No games will be bumped from the package to accommodate replay games. Blackout and other restrictions apply.

If the Flyers can play in the third like they played in the last bit of the second, we may have an interesting finish. But at the very least, if they can keep that type of play up, the series should be more interesting (to us as Flyer fans, anyway) than those first 1 3/4 periods were.

Yup
The Flyers started playing the way they did against Pittsburgh in March, so it’s obvious that they remember how to do that. The early-game jitters are gone.
Even if we lose tonight, I like our chances in Game 2 if we play like that from the beginning. It’s not the most exciting hockey, but it’s what we need to do to beat this team.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
The FLyers really need to get going offensively. They havnt played bad against the Penguins attack but when you allow them to spend that much time in our zone your bound to give up a few goals.
Im looking at Richards Briere and Carter. THey are the three biggest offensive stars on this team…this is why they are paid.
if we can get a goal before the 10 minute mark (preferably on this PP) were within striking distance
The beginning of the period is key.
If we score on the power play, we’ll at least make it interesting the rest of the way.

Our powerplay looks dreadful, and it’s because everyone is standing around waiting for a pass. Noone is getting open. It makes it sooooo easy to defend.

They’re doing the same thing at even strength too. They’re waiting for the Pens to make the mistake, they’re waiting for someone else to give them a chance to score. They need to be aggressive and go after shit. It’s not going to come to them.

I hate to be ‘that guy’ but if the flyers keep this up and get swept out of this series…John stevens is going to be the one that will likely have to pay for it. he absolutely did not get this team ready to play today. when your team quits after going down 1-0 two minutes into the game that falls on the coach and the leaders of the team.
Yeah, but … let’s not get that drastic just yet.

Don’t worry. You’re not ‘that guy’. You’re right. May it’ll be for the better. I don’t care, get a goalie too, get a d-man (or multiple d-men), it doesn’t matter, just do something!

Another post for Richards. That’s gotta be frustrating. On the bright side, 4-1 looks better than 4-0.
…Right?
Something like that.

Not to me. ): I’m one of those people that considers the season a failure if the Stanley Cup isn’t won. Harsh? Dramatic? Yeah. It is. But, that’s the goal, and if you don’t meet the goal then…

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I think Biron has actually been relatively sharp. Thoughts?

He isn’t the reason we lost. And the first three goals were kinda weird.
I give him a C+

I read that they’re retiring the black jerseys — just orange next year. http://www.phinallyphilly.com/2009/03/25/flyers-town-hall-meeting-report/

This is just stupid. In the first period yeah, you should start a fight. With 8 seconds left after being dominated it just looks like you’re a poor loser.
Guerin picked that fight, not Coburn

we cant take the “wipe the slate clean/move on” approach we took after the Rangers game. instead we need to take the “holy shit we played like crap” approach we took after the Toronto game…we scored 5 goals in the first period after that one. Homer needs to come into the locker room breaking sticks again…or whatever he did after that game. because this effort was pathetic
Agreed.

Two problems: Pittsburgh isn’t Toronto and MAF isn’t Gerber

Richards again with the “it’s a seven game series” / “it’s only one game.” That attitude really needs to stop. A loss in the playoffs is not something that you should just brush off as the captain of the team considered the underdogs.
Tough call
I’m sure he’s more upset than he’s letting on. You wish hockey players would show more emotion sometimes, but overall I’d take this approach over Mike Keenan knocking juice bottles off the table. I’m sure Richards will let the team really know how he feels behind closed doors, but he doesn’t have a lot of room to talk to be honest.

Looking forward to Game 2
Seriously, I mean that.
I expect a much better effort from this team. They won’t have the Game 1 Jitters that they had tonight. They showed – however briefly – that they can slow the game down and create some chances. Their penalty kill looked good – the only PP goal they gave up was a total fluke. They need to practice the power play and get the puck movement back. They need to be relentless along the boards, too. If we do this from the start I like our chances.
Ed Snider needs to come in and start breaking sticks this time. I’d imagine he’s an even scarier guy than Holmgren. But either way, we do need to take the post-Toronto approach again.
I’m somewhat hesitant to say this, but I’ll say it anyway. The Penguins were the better team and deserved to win tonight. With that said, they were helped by the bounces. I am almost positive that at least 95% of the bounces were in their favor. Three posts by Richards? Check. Bad bounce off the back wall, the back of the net, and the side of the net which gave Malkin a gift goal? Check. (That was not Knuble’s fault, nor was it Biron’s.) Scoring a goal by kicking it, having it hit the post, then bounce off the back of the goalie’s leg and into the net? Check. Just about a whole bunch of other things I can think of? Check. That is the frustrating stuff. As soon as Crosby’s goal went in like that, I knew it was going to be that kind of a night.
But I believe we’ll be back. This is still going to be a long series.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Generally, yes, but...
… everything off the boards, off the glass, etc., bounced in the Pens’ favor. I know it’s easy to say that the other team got the bounces, but they really did. I’m not one to say that very often.
The AP referred to Malkin’s goal as the result of a giveaway. Give me a break. That was as fluky as fluky can be.
Again, let’s not shot ourselves here: Pittsburgh was the better team and they won. But the whole bounce thing makes it really frustrating.

Only one qualm with what you wrote

I think this charade would be useless. When it was done the last time, it was a nice bump to get us into the playoffs, and not completely slide in. But even then we didn’t string together back-to-back games where we played extremely well (win or loss).
Let’s be straight here – it’s the playoffs. Against your in-state rival. If you can’t get up for that, then nobody is going to get you hyped up. It’s up to each individual player to look inside tonight and tomorrow and find whatever fire that’s left inside, throw caution to the wind, and be willing to let it all ride regardless of the outcome.
This is a team that can play 60 minutes of hockey – we’ve all seen it. This is a team that can get things rolling and moving in the right direction in a short amount of time. But it’s up to them and them alone to get it done.
"...You know, Reemer, someday I'm gonna own a big sports bar."
biron played well.
except for the 4th goal, i mean christ he had no one finish on offense, what the hell are you supposed to do when you team is handing pucks to malkin and serving the puck up in the slot, not to mention a total dysmal effort on the forecheck, in the scrums for the puck, much less anything, every chance we had i felt like a flyer stopped skating or no one came up for support, we played the whole contain puck and laid back on them and finally when we start pressing we score a goal for two important reasons. 1] pittsburgh had already won, they could give two shits 2] it was united nations sitting between north and south korea the whole damn period, and we were north korea fucking with the whole world and pissing everyone off.
im absolutely disgusted, see you friday.
