Carcillo to serve one game suspension
Daniel Carcillo will serve a one-game suspension for his role in an incident in the final minute of last night's game. Expect the versatile Luca Sbisa to take his spot in the lineup in Game 2.

Can we re-sign him anyway?
Let all of our UFAs go except for Nitty. Use the money to get a new starting goalie and a big-time D-Man (JBouw / Komisarek). Maybe trade one or two people for draft pick. Use the extra money to get Upshall.

I believe Upshall is a restricted free agent.

You are correct. He’s an RFA. Yotes and Upshall both have made it clear in print that their preferences are for him to stay a Coyote. I can’t see how they won’t get a deal done.
He’s got way more ice time than he was getting in Philly. He played more than 20 minutes a night 7 times after the trade. He 18 minutes as a high minutes for Philly once. In addition, he’s got a center he clicked with in Matt Lombardi. I expect them to play together a lot for Team Canada at the World Championships. Upshall was third in scoring with the Yotes after the trade. Only Shane Doan and Lombardi had more points after the trade deadline.

I know
Don’t RFAs usually require draft picks as compensation? My thinking was that we could trade people for draft picks, then use those draft picks as compensation for re-signing Upshall.
Moot point, so it appears.

Totally agreed, but the Flyers probably aren’t going to be able to afford him. Van Riemsdyk is a guy that can take over the same on-ice role as Knuble, but we’d definitely miss Knuble’s leadership and veteran presence.

I think I heard somewhere that Knuble was willing to take a paycut or at least less than market value to stay. I don’t know if it would be enough to keep him, as tight as we are to the cap right now, but worth considering.
And do you think JVR starts the season a Flyer or takes a route more like Giroux, taking his time coming from the Phantoms..or whatever they’re called next year
That’s gonna depend on a lot of things… but I see him winding up with the big club somehow next year, if for no reason then the aforementioned limited cap space.

im honestly not upset by this. Sure you dont want to see one of your guys suspended, but Carcillo sucks. ive given him a chance, ive given him an opportunity to prove his worth, and he hasnt done that. he hasnt scored a single goal since the trade, all hes done is take bad penalties. he sucks. even if he wasnt suspended I wouldnt want him getting more then 2 minutes of ice time. sit his ass on the bench and use Sbisa. atleast he has some skill.
There had better be a suspension or two as a result of the Boston/Montreal game tonight as well, or I call shenanigans.
Meh.
For the value I view Carcillo, he does his job well enough. That said, he’s still rotate-able (go with me on this), and we probably should have though about doing so much earlier. If, you know, we had the cap room… Digressing, rotating him out is fine – it’ll allow Sbiza to jump in and maybe his energy spark will be the one we need. We’re at the “The only way to go is up” stage of team building. Just have to work on our timing next time.
As for our suspended friend, I still think Carcillo is stuck in this strange transition mode – trying to reign in the free-wheeling energy he ran around with in Phoenix, to become a more “complete” player for the Orange and Black. Until he figures it all out, he’ll have more really bad games, with a hint of worth thrown around here and there.
To summarize, he’ll suck for now, could develop into something worthwhile next season, but until then, we can rotate him in and out of the lineup freely.
"...You know, Reemer, someday I'm gonna own a big sports bar."
What I don’t like is the way that fans of opposing teams toss around the word goon to describe any physical player that doesn’t play on their team. I don’t use that word toward any other players, but they call Hartnell, Carcillo, Cote, and Asham goons. Downey was a goon. Hartnell is a pest, but most definitely not a goon. Asham and Carcillo have some skill, so I don’t think you can just blindly label them goons…at least not Asham…Carcillo might take stupid penalties and lose his mind from time to time…
Long story short, they have players like these on their team but they don’t refer to them as “goons”. It just p*sses me off.
Remember, We're the Flyers!
Everyone who plays for us is either:
a) A Talentless Goon
b) A Cheap-Shot Artist
c) A Whiner
d) A Disgrace to the Game
e) All of the Above
That’s what most other teams will tell you anyway. We could have all of Detroit’s roster on our team and we’d still be labeled as such. I hate it too, but there’s no talking sense with most sports fans, unless they root for the same team you do.

I should say...
… that’s what FANS of most other teams will tell you.
Philly fans are passionate and knowledgeable. I can say the same for Flames fans, as I root for them and as I post on Matchsticks and Gasoline. And hey, some of our new friends at Pensburgh are the same way too.
Far too often, though, fans of other teams have the blinders on. They believe what their Mommies and Daddies tell them about the Flyers of old. So whenever the Flyers of Today play, these fans only look for the bad or “tough” things we do. That way they can say, “See? See? They’re thugs!” This probably sounds childish, but I am convinced that a lot of other hockey fans actually think this way.
