"That’s not the effort we wanted. That is not acceptable. That’s not a playoff team that is trying to win the Stanley Cup. Be honest. Now it’s time to go. It’s playoff time for us now, too. We’re not in the playoffs yet. We’ve got to realize that so the next six games is our playoff time now."

This should have been said after the comeback in Long Island but because they won the bleeding was somewhat stemmed and then because Boston is 1st in the East I feel like the Flyers thought losing to them was acceptable, which it isn’t. Its a shame that they are only getting the message now after playing so poorly right before the playoffs.
However, maybe this is good. This could be the exact wake up this team needs. I would rather this happen 6 games before the playoffs then 3 games before the playoffs or in the playoffs. If they turn it on right now and finish these next 6 games strong and get back on track then they can hit their stride with perfect timing. Plus, add in that the Flyers are geared for the playoffs and will, without doubt, step up their game accordingly this small slump could play in our favor.
Who knows? I am just trying to be optimistic after such a horrible game and the playoffs growing ever closer . . .
Talking the talk vs. Walking the walk...
This is what they say, but what will they do? We know how they are capable of playing. They know how they are capable of playing. So why don’t they play that way? Seriously! It was like they left it all out there in the Jersey game, and then forgot what they did. The Flyers were a different team last Thursday against Florida than they were three nights prior against the Devils. And since then, they’ve just gotten worse and worse – save for the third period of the Islanders game and the second period of the Boston game.
You can forget catching Jersey now. Last night was their prime opportunity, and they blew it.

"Jeff (Carter), Mike (Richards), Mike Knuble, Scottie Hartnell…those guys need to step up now. They’ve done their share for most of the season. They’ve played fairly consistently but now it’s all about sealing the deal and getting ourselves into a sure playoff position."
"Until you see that little letter next to your name in the standings in the papers, there’s no sense feeling comfortable because the league is too tight. Just because you play well doesn’t mean you’re going to win. That’s how tight the league is. Last night (a 3-2 loss in Toronto), the little bits and pieces of the game I saw, we didn’t play hard enough to come close to competing for the two points on the line. We need to do a better job."
Amen. Hope this fires them up a little bit.
as terrible as that game was im trying to look at the positives. Id rather have them struggle now and give the front office/coaching staff a reason to light a fire under their asses before playoff time then wait until the first round to do so.
as competitive as this team has been the last two seasons we sometimes forget that it’s still a very young group. sure we have no shortage of seasoned veterans (timmonen, knuble, Briere, Asham) but the core of the team (including the head coach) is still very young and just two years removed from being the worst team in the NHL. being a winning team is about more then just having good players, it’s about learning how to win. The Flyers are close but they still have yet to figure out exactly how to be a championship caliber team. going into a game like last night’s you have to have the mentality of “we’re in a playoff race, this team is not, we know we are better than this team and there is no way they are beating us…” you have to learn how to win, and we just havnt quite gotten there yet.
I hope Stevens juggles the lines again. he juggled them last week and they seemed to be working but then he went back to the old pairings for the last few games. I really want to see Giroux/Briere on Carter’s line. I cant emphasize this enough, Carter’s lack of production over the second half of the season is largely due to the fact that he has such a dangerous shot and defenders gravitate towards him everytime he touches the puck. we need skill oriented player on that line that can dart to the open spaces created by such defenses. Imagine the offensive possibilites of Giroux’s set up ability coupled with Carter’s finishing ability.
I mostly agree.
This is a young team at heart. You’d think they would have learned from last year but maybe not. That team had veteran leadership from guys like Smith and Hatcher who are now gone. I said it before but I’ll say it again: Richards has had to deal with an awful lot in his first season as captain, and he’s done a good job for the most part. This is the final regular-season hurdle for him. Let’s see how he handles it.
Put Briere with Carter and Hartnell again. Keep Richards with Gagne and Knuble. Giroux with Lupul and Carcillo? Start Niittymaki to keep him fresh, and have Biron ready for Ottawa on Saturday night. Oh, and call up Syvret. Andew Alberts really needs a game off. The whole team has been lousy, but the Jones – Alberts pair has been a disaster of late, and #41 has been the bigger culprit.
Speaking of defensemen who give the puck away: I was watching the Flames-Stars game on GameCenter tonight, and our old comrade Jim Vandermeer was up to his old turnover-happy ways. Man am I glad he’s not here anymore.
