Hm. As a musician, I can’t help but think that these live-person-singing-with-dead-person things are crutches for people who aren’t good enough to stand on their own. Natalie Cole included, although that was a little better because at least it was her dad.

Lauren Hart can sing just fine on her own. But back in 74 when the Flyers won, Kate Smith was the “secret weapon.” She has a statue in front of the Spectrum, in fact. The duet is playoff/big game tradition, now.

I know the Flyers are down, but are they playing well? Hard to tell from just shot totals…

World Ph*cking Champs! That was fun - let's do it again...

by Jordan Ellel on Apr 21, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

They were playing pretty good. The goals against were due to a very odd situation and misplay by one of the D-men. Theres been a momentum shift now though and they’re not looking too good. MAF is playing pretty good, shutting down any chances they had.

by pintium02 on Apr 21, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Fleury is stopping everything so far, but we’ve had some good chances. Very sloppy overall though.

by chillicothe20 on Apr 21, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it was looking like Fleury was playing solidly since the shots seem to be from pretty good locations (between the circles, and inside the hash marks)…if he’s playing that way, hopefully it will just take getting a single one by to open the floodgates…

At 750K words, I’m thinking RJ would’ve gone back on his word…I love the fact that one of the primary reasons for 3 volumes is that they don’t have the technology to efficiently bind a book that large…

but to the main point, I’m just starting book 2 of the Mistborn series and I have to say that I am very much enjoying it thus far…

by Ben Feldman on Apr 21, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. We should have won this game hands-down, but Fleury was outstanding.

I agree with you, Ben. After the first intermission, shots were 34-13 Philly and the Flyers controlled the puck in the Pens’ end just about the whole time. Fleury was the difference, he was out of his mind tonight.

by Hooks Orpik on Apr 21, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, but they just looked flat. Fleury was great but it didn’t hurt that they were just throwing pucks into his chest. They didn’t play their hockey. As dominant as they seemed I could just tell they didn’t have it. It wasn’t gonna happen for them.

by Mitchell Green on Apr 21, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, but...

… I think that was more of a product of Fleury being “on” then the Flyers being “off.”

Think of the Montreal series last year. We won because of Martin Biron, RJ Umberger, and Carey Price. Biron was really “on” more than the rest of the Canadiens were “off.” It happens in the playoffs.

by Geoff Detweiler on Apr 21, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

UNINSPIRED???

What game were you watching, sir? Was it Detroit/Columbus?

No one who was at the game would agree with you. The first period was one of the more exciting playoff hockey periods I’ve seen in a while. Both teams played well. The second period started out that way until the Crosby “goal” and then the Flyers got stupid for a little while. Eventually they got better as the period went on. Then, they absolutely dominated the third period. Fleury was the difference. End of story.

My only gripes with the Flyers were the power play (half of them were useless) and Jared Ross’ blown coverage which led to the Kennedy goal. Other than that, they absolutely deserved to win.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 21, 2009 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Watching the replay, Ross wasn’t exactly where he should be, but he was covering Staal (As he should – center on center) and Kennedy came in from the wing. Either that’s Carcillo’s man (I didn’t even see him on the ice, but he’s usually the LW on that line) or Alberts’ (Who was in front of the net, as he should be, but covering nobody). On that play, Staal drove to the net, Ross passed him off to Alberts, but at that point, Staal and Kennedy crossed and Kennedy was left with the puck, noone on him, and Ross spinning around to switch men. I’d say it was poor backchecking, but maybe it was a line change? Either way, I still say that’s Jones’ first mistake of the playoffs. He just got blown by. Straight up spun around and left behind. That created the 3-2, with only Alberts and Ross back to cover.

Bottom line, just a pretty play that I think deserves more credit to Pittsburgh than blame to Philadelphia.

The puck went in the net, there was no kicking motion, the goalie wasn’t interfered with and the net was on the moorings when it went in.

Strange goal, no doubt, but if Mike Richards is scoring it, you guys are bouncing off the walls.

by Hooks Orpik on Apr 21, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

No, if Richards was scoring it, they would have not counted it

by thwalls on Apr 21, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The goalie wasn't interfered with?

I was at the game. Biron did not have an opportunity to stop the puck before it went into the net. How could he? Both he and Crosby were in the net before the puck went in.

It doesn’t matter if it’s Crosby or Richards or someone on the Atlanta Thrashers doing that. If the goalie does not have an opportunity to stop a shot, the goal should not count.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

But are you able to call goalie interference after the ref calls goal?

If I understand, you’re not arguing it should have been overturned, but rather that there should have been a penalty and an initial, on ice call of no goal?

by Geoff Detweiler on Apr 22, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s how I feel about it too. I don’t know the exact rule but once that’s ruled a goal on the ice, it’s tough to overturn.

That said, it never should’ve been ruled a goal on the ice.

by pintium02 on Apr 21, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m also sick of that happening. There were a few games down the stretch — back when the Flyers knew how to play for 60 minutes in a regular season game — that we should have won based on the incredible number of high-quality chances and defensive plays that we made, but we ran into someone like Craig Anderson, who decided to have a career night. There were also games that we didn’t deserve to win but we did because Niitty or Biron had great nights.

That’s hockey for you.

Carter's Elbow/Wrist

Anyone else think that Carter seems to be favoring his elbow/wrist? Every time he goes down or gets checked hard, he seems to be favoring one arm. Have been noticing it for a month or so.
