Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Sources tell TSN the Philadelphia Flyers have had significant discussions with Ray Emery's agent J.P Barry about the potential of the 26-year-old goaltender returning to the National Hockey League.

Emery played in Russia last season in the Kontinental Hockey League with Atlant Mytischi and has a lucrative offer on the table to return to the KHL with the same club.

Emery helped the Ottawa Senators to the Stanley Cup finals in 2007, but is considered too much of a risk for some in the NHL who remain spooked by a number of off-ice concerns that contributed to the Senators first placing Emery on waivers in June 2008 before the team bought out his contract.

The Flyers have not yet offered Emery a contract.

to be an issue for us to take risks on players.

Thats nuts

Homer brings in Carcillo and now perhaps Emery???? If this is true it is unbelievable..

Please no.

This can’t be a serious thing.

Let's go Flyers!

Rolling out the welcome Mat

I like Emery in Philadelphia. He reminds me a lot of Hextall with his tenacity and no nonsense approach. We attack Biron for being indifferent and nonchalant about games. This guy is the complete opposite from what I’ve read.

He also has something that Biron doesn’t have: Stanley Cup experience.

Whats the worst that can happen with this guy? We lose in the first round?
Oh wait…

Don’t judge this guy off the bat. If he comes to play in Philadelphia we will roll out the welcome mat.

I'm with you...

We can’t dismiss this guy out of hand. Since he played in Russia, how expensive could he be? Every year the Flyers sign some shitty goalie wondering if anything will happen. J-S Aubin this year, Boucher last year, and Jamie Storr a few years ago. If he signs for $550k or even $850k, is it really that bad? I mean, he won’t turn 27 until September. That’s still young. Especially for a goalie.

by Geoff Detweiler on May 4, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely, he could potentially be a cheap number 2 with legit number 1 starter upside.

Emery is crazy for sure, but we’re talking about a team who had or has guys like Downie, Cote, and Carcillo.

by FredEx on May 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

the only thing is he wont be resigning for 850k, hes getting 2 million (maybe under 2 million on the account of how sh*tty the russian ruble is). I say give 2.5-3 million, short team deal and go from there

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on May 4, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd still offer him less

I’m up for bringing in Emory in for the right price. I’ll put 2mil at the cap for now, and hope to get him in the 1.2-1.6 mil range. If he wants more, thanks but we’ll look elsewhere.

…This really is less a reflection of his talent, and more of me just trying to find ways to trim the budget a bit. :D

"...You know, Reemer, someday I'm gonna own a big sports bar."

by IcersGuy on May 4, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

If he’s getting 2 mil there, you’d think/hope playing in the NHL again would be worth it for less money. So unless there turns out to be several teams bidding for him, 2 mil or less seems right.

by FredEx on May 4, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I hear, Homer really wants J-bo. So signing Emery at a cheap price might be a precursor to that.

by jello44 on May 4, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Where are you hearing that Homer really wants J-Bo? Cause if that’s true then I am gonna get really excited!

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly were the off-ice concerns?

Go to the Wikipedia article...

… and look under personal life. From what I understand, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Wow. The first thing under personal life is that he has tattoos. He must be bad ass.
Ok, the second half is actually bad but that first paragraph was a joke.

by pintium02 on May 4, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I should have clarified...

I could care less about his tattoos or his wardrobe. The second paragraph is the “tip of the iceberg” part.

I posted a question about Emery at Silver Seven and you can see the response I got, regarding his level of play. Personal issues aside, the last thing we need is an overrated goalie.

NO!!!!

If someone is essentially kicked out of the league because he is COMPLETELY sideways, you don’t get him. I don’t care about his talent. All that does is cause a major distraction to your team chemistry, and we all saw what happened as a result of that. Except in this case, it wouldn’t be losing somebody we like – it would be keeping someone we don’t like.

From “Wikipedia:”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Emery

“Emery is notable for getting into numerous on-ice altercations, a rarity for an ice hockey goaltender. Emery has been involved in one such incident at the NHL level, fighting two Buffalo players, Martin Biron and Andrew Peters, in a line brawl during the 2006–07 NHL season. He was also involved in a much publicized fight with then teammate Brian McGrattan during a Senators’ practice in January of 2008, as well as an altercation with Jason Spezza during a practice in the 2007 playoffs, and a “verbal sparring match” with Chris Neil on February 3, 2008."

I worry that Homer’s GM career is starting to mirror his coaching career… one good year with exceeded expectations, and all backwards from there.

If they don’t want to re-sign Biron, I’d rather they sign Anderson and go with Backlund as a backup.

That is...

Here is the Wikipedia article, "Wikipedia:"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Emery sorry.

by mikefive on May 4, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that it’s not optimal, but if he comes at a cheap, one-year deal, I don’t see it as a huge problem. The minute anything happens, cut his ass. But an on-ice fight, even against Biron, doesn’t mean anything. Garth Snow, Rox Hextall, Neil Little… goalies fight. And Andrew Peters jumped him from the video I saw, but noone really knows what was said on ice.

Bottom line: He has severe issues. You didn’t even mention his drunk driving or punching his trainer in the face in Russia. But there are some notable things to say.

Outside of the on-ice fight (which doesn’t tell me anything. Goalies fight.) and “an altercation” – I don’t know what that means – with Spezza, the other events were in the 2007-2008 season. That season, the Senators started with a new GM and coach. Emery made the All-Star team, and arrived late to practice the first day after the break. Apparently, that was a tipping point in his relations. But Wikipedia also says the head coach had a “‘lose and you’re out’ policy of rotating his goaltenders depending on the team winning or losing, and not the goaltender’s performance.” That can’t be good for a goaltender’s psyche, especially when you led them to the CF the year before. Just sayin…

by Geoff Detweiler on May 4, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Clarifying again...

I don’t care that he got into a fight. I only mentioned it because he got into a fight with Biron. From what I know about Marty, he is not overly quick to anger. If Emery got Marty to drop the gloves, then something bad must have happened. If Emery and Biron end up on the same team, and there is bad blood left over, then that could be problematic.

No. thats my initial reaction.

We simply don’t need a headcase, especially at one of the most high pressure positions in professional sports. Imagine if he has a bad stretch where he lets in a bunch of soft goals and the fans get on him. He’d explode.

We see this type of character in all sports and the debate is always “does his talent outweigh his attitude?”. 99% of the time the answer is a resounding no. what happens with these players is they come in and play nice in the beginning, we hear the whole “oh he’s changed” stuff, and then as soon as adversity strikes they implode. Guys like this are a divisive force in the locker room. And don’t tell me it’s “intesity” or “character”, punching your trainer in the face isn’t “intensity” it’s mental instability. guys like this put themselves above the team, take costly penaltys, and ultimately cause distractions (Im looking at you Mr. Carcillo).

The Flyers need to focus on maturing and growing as a team. bringing in a psychotic goaltender would be a step backwards.

And we havn’t even talked about his playing ability. He’s been out of the league for some time now, who knows if he’s any good.

The Flyers should worry about their defense, before goaltending. If we can build a formidable blue line I think someone like Biron can flourish back there. I can not stress this enough, Defense wins championships and ultimately it’s the defense that influences the goaltenders performance more than anything. I’m not saying a good goaltender can’t do wonders for a team (Fleury) but ultimately they can’t do much without defense. Take Martin Brodeur for example. Obviously he’s a great player, but do you think he’d have the records he does if the Devils weren’t such a sound defensive team?

Emery

I think it is too delicate a position to entrust to someone as volatile as Emery. If he was the backup to a stud goalie I’d be a litel open but really if we are going to go ahead with a “?” #2 potentially #1I’d rather have Biron be that guy. He’s a good team guy and has shown he can step up, even if he’s not a lock down ride to the Cup guy.

by Fr. Orange and Black on May 5, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone else remember the Biron-Emery goalie fight? I forget who, but one of the Sabre skaters eventually came over and started punching Emery in the face, with Emery smiling all the way.

Emery is flyer material

he’s defiant, original, brash, with some personality and individual independence, tough and may have gotten a bum rap from an organization that was looking for a scapegoat and he fit the bill…

sign him !!!!!

by fitzy first on May 7, 2009 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

I just want our boys to finally make that push into the Stanley Cup. We have had a great team last couple seasons just can’t seem to break that hump. Emery has the ability and I think for a cheap short-term contract isn’t necessarily the death of us. I do think that we are kind of jumping the gun here tho, I know with contract and salary cap woes our hands are tied, but there are a lot of potential takers for the numbr 1 position in net. I’ve heard names like Price, Luongo, Anderson, Vokoun, Clemmensen, etc….being thrown around as possibles and I know we are looking for a Defensive D-men as well, so maybe the right trade with the right team could give us much more and also maybe knock some money off that cap for us too.
