I've updated the Flyers salary cap chart to include Ian Laperriere and Brian Boucher. The team has about $2.9 million $2.053 in cap space to, presumably, sign an offensive forward and possibly an extra defenseman.

I only count 19 signed players though. So we’ve gotta get 4 more people, even if they’re from our minor league system, out of that cap space. $700K isn’t much wiggle room.

Is there a requirement

to hit 23 active? I thought 23 was just the maximum that could be carried at this point…

23 is the max but isn’t required, but while i think 19 might be legal, it’s a bit dangerously low for my taste. I’d rather have the room to at least bring up some kids from the phantoms if they’re needed, but we’ll barely be able to do that.

Rule 5.1

The rule is minimum of 20.

Sorry, I thought that was implied...

Either way, we really only need to get to 20, and I don’t doubt that, for right now, that’s Homer’s goal. If we have to start playing with backups and giving guys a game off, the extra $1mil cushion will allow him to bring up a Phantom or two as needed. But for now, I think he’s only looking to find one final forward for about $1mil to fill that final gap.

You really do need at least a mil or you’re just playing with fire. If someone’s hurt, but not hurt enough to go on LTIR, you need call-up space.

(Thanks for clarification on the minimum roster rule, I looked and wasn’t able to find it in the moment. Different sources were saying both 18 and 20 and I couldn’t locate the official one.)

I want to clarify my original post, in that I never meant that we had to go to 23 men on day one; but that I meant to convey that $700K pp (which was based on flawed numbers, it’s really closer to the league minimum 500K) is tight even to call up Phantoms’ players as needed, since many of them do cost more than that.

However, part of me worries slightly more about carrying a roster of only 20 because I’m not 100% sure they have completely adjusted their mindset for it. A year ago, calling up a Phantom could be a decision made just hours before game time without major ramifications. I’ve driven to Glens Falls from Cherry Hill, and in absolutely no traffic it’s a good 5.5 hours. Obviously I’m not saying that they aren’t aware that they moved the team, but I’m less comfortable with dropping the roster that far before they’ve actually played in that situation to realize that they do need to make those decisions with a lot more notice. I’m also not saying they need to go all the way to 23, but I think I would go to 21 by the time we’re ready to actually start the season, even if that counts current Phantoms players who end up making the team at the end of the summer. (And I’ll probably feel much better after practices start when I can see with my own eyes how everybody’s skating regarding previous injuries or surgeries.)

I definitely agree about 1M in call up room would be a good goal for Homer. It’s just a tricky situation all around.

I looked through your numbers and your total caphit line is wrong, if you add up your caphits you should come up with a total of $54.646.250, that leaves $2.153.750.

I concur

Looking at the math, Travis, it looks like you accidentally left out Boucher’s contract.

SO

What’s the diff….800K? Regardless, I think we’re done unless we move someone. Right now we have to hope Homer has a taker for a Carle or Jones…I know Hartnell was thrown around :(

I did.

It’s fixed now…. the team has 2,053,750 on cap space left.

Thanks for the correction.

Just further shows that we need to stand pat. Need that 2 mil if Briere’s groin is shot

I’m still thinking a trade might be on the way. Briere if possible, or Gagne, Carle or Jones.

If we want to add another forward, we basically have zero room to do so, without a move.

Also looking to next off season, Pronger, Coburn, and Parent will all need new deals, and the latter two are definitely getting a pay raise. Emery will also command a raise or we’ll have to pay another goalie better money to take over.

Briere is going to be tough to move, so he’s likely staying around. Jones only has one year left, so he won’t impact the following season, only this one. That leaves Carle if we move a D-man, or Gagne if we move a forward (assuming Briere is unmovable).

Random Thought

When I was looking at current Phantoms and what they would cost to pay them to be on the active roster, I was surprised to learn that 6 of our minor leaguers (Not including Rathje) have a larger cap hit than Claude Giroux. Still under $1 million, but James van Riemsdyk, Jon Kalinski, Kevin Marshall, Michael Ratchuk, Michael Teslak, and Andreas Nodl all count more against the cap than Giroux.

Either way, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ross is resigned, filling out the roster with him and Nodl.
