Breaking Down the Flyers 2009/10 Schedule

There's always a lot to take in when a team announces their schedule for the upcoming season. 82 games unveiled all at once can be overwhelming, so we'll try to make the task a little easier for you.

The Flyers open the season on Friday, October 2 in Carolina. They then travel to the Prudential Center in Newark to take on the Devils the following night before opening their home schedule against Mike Knuble, Alex Ovechkin, and the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, October 6.

The season is highlighted by the Winter Classic at Boston's Fenway Park on New Years Day 2010 between the Flyers and Bruins. Due to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, there will be no all-star festivities this year and the Flyers will only play seven games in February -- no games from the 14th until March 2.

There is at least one game against each of the Western Conference teams, but the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and San Jose Sharks are played twice each -- once at home and once on the road -- for a total of 18 games against the West. There are six games against each team in the division, and four games against the rest of the Eastern Conference clubs.

The Flyers take their annual Holiday Season road trip again this year, but this time they'll stay on the East Coast, traveling to Tampa, Miami, Carolina, New York (versus both teams), Boston (for the Winter Classic) and Ottawa. It is the longest road trip of the season, six games in length. The Flyers will also take two Western swings, a four-gamer in November against Los Angeles, San Jose, Phoenix, and Colorado, and a three-gamer at the start of February against Calgary, Edmonton, and Minnesota.

There are several homestands, but the longest is six games long at the end of January. The season closes with a home-and-home against the Rangers. The front end is at Madison Square Garden on April 9, with the final game of the season at home against the NYR on April 11.

Again, tons of details after the jump...

I like this schedule so far. It seems pretty balanced, and the ‘Disney On Ice road trip’ or whatever isn’t as bad this year. The first home game against Pittsburgh should be a good gut check … ‘intense’ will hopefully be putting it lightly.

I feel awful for the Rangers, who have to witness the raising of the banner in Pittsburgh.

No sympathy for the Rangers. Ever,

Agreed

No sympathy . . . but I def. would be f**king mad if they had raised the banner against us.
Glad its not us and looking forward to bringing the Penguins back to reality 6 times this season.

Ditto

Ranger fans still can’t wrap their head around that fact that they were the worst team in professional sports for 8 years.

Back To Back Again

Flyers meet Rangers in a home and home again to close out the year…. why?

I know the Flyers played the Islanders in the middle of the games last year, but still. Weird ain’t it?

there’s always a lot of division games at the end of the season so it’s always possible

Rough first month

Schedule doesn’t look bad, nasty first month though. I haven’t looked at other team’s schedules, but I hope we get those games in hand like we had last year. That was a nice cushion.

Welcome.

The one thing I love about the schedule this year is, yeah there’s the 2 week layoff for the Olympics, but means we don’t have those stretches of 4 and 5 days off like we had seemingly multiple times last year. Those were terrible.

Because of that, though, it doesn’t seem to me like any team will get a huge games in hand advantage because no team is going too long without playing a game.

Also, the Flyers are only in ONE Hockey Night in Canada timeslot, and that’s not until February 13 @ Montreal. Not cool.

the Phantoms..

Do the Flyers have to play another preseason game against the Phantoms? I know the preseasons don’t effect the standings…..but last year the Flyers were whipped like dogs by their minor league counterparts……how an NHL team loses to an AHL team just is mind boggling…I don’t care what the circumstances are, that was a humiliating loss. bottom line is pride! an AHL team should not even hang around with an NHL team, much less beat them.
I hope if they play the Phantoms this year, they go in with the mind set…that they are representing the NHL (the best hockey league in the world) losses to minor league teams is unacceptable….that loss to the Phantoms I think kicked off that 6 game losing streak, that the team opened the season with..
