Flyers clearly don’t give a damn bout a bad reputation, to put it lightly.

I think that part of the Todd Bertuzzi story is behind us. My larger concern is that he is a waste of time and money.
Then again, since we’re the Flyers, everyone will talk about the Steve Moore incident like it just happened yesterday, when John Stevens and Paul Holmgren told him to do it.

I may be going a bit out there, but this has been floating around in my mind for a bit and it’s making more and more some sense as we trade for Pronger and have our eyes on OKT and Bertuzzi.
If we get Bertuzzi (and OKT), there’s little doubt in my mind Homer’s strategy is for us to be the Broad Street Bullies again. Why? I really think he still wants to get back at the league for having the 1980 Cup stolen from us. 1980 was his best season ever in the NHL in terms of points. I think he may want to win the Cup because he knows he deserved to have his name on it in 1980 with the Flyers, and now he’s having another opportunity. Am I crazy in assuming this may be his ultimate motivation?
How did the Flyers get to the Finals in 1980? Well, we were the Broad Street Bullies. He thinks if we become the Broad Street Bullies again, we can get to the Cup again. I’m sure Snider’s with him because we all know how Snider thinks about all of this.
Homer’s new strategy this season is, and I quote, to be “more uptempo and more physical.” Doesn’t this sound like the team that once had a certain fast-paced winger who at one point held the record for most career penalty minutes as a Flyer?
I would hope that Homer wouldn’t let his innermost personal emotions about not winning a Cup before dictate the way he approaches winning a Cup as a front office man, but what you’re saying does make total sense. As long as Homer is looking at the way the game has changed since 1980 and THEN deciding that would be the best way to win a Cup with the current roster, then that’s fine.
But if you’re suggesting he’s trying to win just as they would’ve (should’ve) in 1980, out of spite and whether or not that’s the smartest course of action, well, I wouldn’t be okay with that. Then again, if it works, who cares?

I know it’s ridiculous. I wouldn’t call it anything else. It’s pure speculation, but on some level it almost makes sense.
No, I’m sorry, it is far from “making sense,” it is pure ridiculous conspiracy theory that wastes the people’s time who bother to read it.
I don't know if it's that extreme...
The 1980 “Streak Team” was not just tough, but they were high-scoring too. Much like our current crop, they had 6 20+ goal scorers:

So maybe Homer is trying to re-create a team like that one, but I doubt that it’s out of spite.

well...
everyone on here was clamoring for Bertuzzi more then anyone else that was available. Not sure why but they were (maybe cap space, maybe his physical style), I’m surprised that there aren’t more satisfied comments on here now they got the guy they wanted. I still wanted someone with better offensive hands but if we do win then yeah, who cares?
Nash for 8 More, Baby!
I saw his name on a list of the top 100 FAs and thought it made sense.
Not that I’m overly excited about it, but I thought there was a decent chance this happens, and off the top of my head Malhotra is the only guy I’d rather have more.
Not saying that it wouldn’t make sense, the Flyers have made the decision to go to a, in Holmgren’s words, “an uptempo and physical team” (kinda hashed his words but you get the point). The addition of Bertuzzi is just piece of this puzzle that we are putting together, I was just more surprised that there weren’t more positive things being said about this considering that he was a wanted player here in Philly. (out of what is available player wise and cap room)
I do like the fact that we are hunting down a player like Bertuzzi to fill in for Knuble’s skates. Granted like chrislanci posed, not as much offense probably but good size and can still put pucks in the net…so why not? He is younger, got good size and physicality, and would probably settle for a cheap deal seeing how Philly is gearing up to make a Stanley Cup run….I don’t think ‘the Pitt’ will get off so easy this coming season.

bring in big bad Bert
offensive hands with good size… we have enough speed around him, might work out… we could have the next legion of DOOM with Gags, Richy and burt (or Harts) and the legion of ZOOM with Carter, Danny and Claude
Why Not??
My question is simple someone propose a legitimate reason why we should not add a power forward like Bertuzzi to our lineup to replace Knuble. One he is younger than Knuble not as good but 800,000 or something like that it is low risk high reward. If can’t play then you are out 800K not a big deal it is not like they are giving anything up for him. He is not going to be playing 1st line minutes either which is also good. Just put all your money on the Flyers for winning the PIM race this year.
- He wastes cap space unless he gets signed for $700k or less.
- He is not particularly talented. (15g, 44p, -15, in 18 TIO last season)
- There’s a reason he’s been on four different teams the last three seasons
- He blocks a younger player from getting NHL experience and delays that younger player’s maturation process.
There are four quick reasons.
If Bertuzzi does sign on the cheap, and if he puts up 15 goals on the 3rd line next year, that would be fine. Not that I want him to sign here, but that would be acceptable.
Bert has to realize that his best days are far behind him. Part of his problem last year was playing for Mike Keenan, who used him far too often. The Calgary media called him on it, too. He gave some BS excuses like “Bertuzzi is so talented that he’s going to draw two defenders toward him and open up the ice for the other players! Why not use him for half of the game?”
I understand Homer wanting a veteran presence on the team but I really don’t think this is the way to go.
