Behind Enemy Lines: Winging It In Motown

It's been a while, but tonight we'll see the orange and black take the ice officially for the first time since being ousted by the Penguins in the first round of the 2009 playoffs. There are a lot of expectations for both the Flyers and the Red Wings this season, but not many questions will be answered tonight as the two teams take the ice. After all, it is just the first of seven preseason games.

There are several storylines tonight, though. Here are some of them.
  • How will Ray Emery perform? He's facing off against another NHL team for the first time in two years. Does he look up to the challenge?
  • As we mentioned earlier today, tonight is an important game for James van Riemsdyk. A solid performance could go a long way toward his chances of making the Flyers roster. He'll be on the Flyers top line with Claude Giroux and Danny Briere, going head-to-head with Detroit's top line of Johan Franzen, Pavel Datsyuk, and Tomas Holmstrom.
  • Chris Pronger will suit up for the Flyers for the first time. He'll be paired with Matt Carle.
  • An interesting bottom defensive pairing will see impressive youngsters Joonas Lehtivuori and Oskars Bartulis playing together. How do they handle the NHL pressure?
  • Mark Bell and Blair Betts, both in camp on a professional try out basis, will state their cases in game action tonight.
After the jump, the full lineups for both teams.

Star-divide

Flyers lineup:

James van Riemsdyk - Claude Giroux - Danny Briere
Scott Hartnell - Jeff Carter - Mike Pyorala
Andreas Nodl - Jared Ross - Krys Kolanos
Ian Laperriere - Blair Betts - Mark Bell

Matt Carle - Chris Pronger
Randy Jones - Ryan Parent
Oskars Bartulis - Joonas Lehtivouri

Ray Emery
Brian Boucher

Red Wings lineup:

Johan Franzen - Pavel Datsyuk - Tomas Holmstrom
Kris Draper - Justin Abdelkader - Patrick Eaves
Mattias Ritola - Kris Newbury - Jan Mursak
Johan Ryno - Cory Emmerton - Jeremy Williams

Nicklas Lidstrom - Jakub Kindl
Derek Meech - Brian Rafalski
Jonathan Ericsson - Andy Delmore

Jimmy Howard
Daniel Larsson

As mentioned, there will be no television coverage of the game tonight, but you can listen on 610 WIP online at the Flyers website. Talk it up here during the game in the first game thread of the new season.

Go Flyers!

Seems like WIP online has a pretty big delay.

I like that we’ve heard JvR’s name a couple of times already. It’s pretty surreal to hear Timmy talking about Pronger and realizing — oh wait, he’s on our team.

Emery out of position?

There’s a picture on the wall at the Skate Zone in Atlantic City where Beezer and the team are celebrating a win. Everybody else is about a foot taller than him at least. Hilarious.

But it sounds like Emery’s giving up rebounds? All he’s done is “knock down” the puck.

Riemer scores! 1-0 Flyers

Word of advice people. To make pre-season on the radio more interesting, you’d better be drinking like it’s the playoffs.

Damn. Emery is having rebound control issues

by flyrsfrk05 on Sep 16, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I get the feeling that Emery doesn’t have very good rebound control at all.

Emery let in a goal in preseason?!?!

Put that chump on waivers.

The Jamie Tardif goal puts the Flyers in a 2-1 hole they’ll never dig out of.

Here’s hoping we can at least get a good lottery pick in the 2010 draft…
