Phaneuf Preseason Hit
I am posting this out there in support and the my belief in the anti-Flyers conspiracy that exists in the NHL specifically with Colin Campbell the "Rules Czar". If you haven't seen it here it is Phaneuf puts Okposo out on a strecher following a flying shoulder to the head with Okposo looking the other way. I haven't read anything about a suspension but the hit reminds me of the Downie hit a couple of years ago that got him 25 games and pretty much cost him a spot with team. Here are links to both please let me know what you think I can see that the Downie hit might be a little worse but Phanuef still deserves at least 15 games for what he did based on the standards set by the Downie suspension. Please let me know if I am crazy at least Downie made 1st contact with MacAmmond's chest. Both MacAmmond and Okpose left on stretchers. Also if you think the Asham in the last game was dirty this is what he could have done if he had "intent to injure".

EDIT - NHL has reviewed the Phanuef hit and deemed it legal, no suspension except for the Islander that jumped of the bench to fight him.

WOW
The hit is even being advertised on the Flames website as “THE BOOM IS LOWERED” no controversy no word of suspension apparently the Scott Stevens rule exception as been passed down to Phaneuf.
Now, I will say that there is one BIG difference between Downie’s hit and Phaneuf’s. When Phaneuf hit Okposo, Okposo was in possession of the puck. When Downie hit MacAmmond, MacAmmond had since passed the puck and was out of the play.
However, I understand your comparison. Phaneuf hit Okposo high and it looked incredibly dangerous hence Okposo needing be taking off on a stretcher. But, Okposo had his head down. He was looking at the puck and Phaneuf made him pay. Couple that with the fact that Phaneuf is two inches taller than Okposo, Phaneuf’s is gonna be “high.”
I couldn’t really tell from the video if Phaneuf made contact with Okposo’s head or not. Minus the potential “hit to the head” I have no problem with Phaneuf’s hit. This is hockey, by nature it is an incredibly physical game. And that is the way that I want it to remain. You have players like Cindy who fall and cry, get special treatment and ruin the “toughness” aspect of the game for everyone else because now the league has to baby players. I never want to see a player get injured. You play to hurt but never to injure. There is a big difference. Okposo had his head down and Phaneuf caught him good. If we yell and cry about every “big” hit, soon there will no hitting allowed. I want the players to be safe and I am glad that the league makes it a strong point to stress safety for the players but they know what they are signing up for and they wouldn’t play if they didn’t like players being able to check.
I will agree that there is some level of biased against the Flyers that Colin Campbell has but I do not think that this is a good example of that. Go back to the playoffs last year and compare Dan Carcillo’s cheapshot at the end of the Game 1 of the playoff’s to Mike Cammalleri’s almost identical punch on Martin Havlat during last year’s playoffs. Carcillo was suspedned and Cammalleri was not.
Now, if this had of been a Flyers defensemen laying out an opposing forward, would we see a fine, suspension or both? I think there is good chance. I would be pissed because to me, it is a clean hit and I love the physical aspect of the game. I hope Okposo is okay but I am glad that there are players like Phaneif who haven’t become so watered down by our new “no touch” league that they are still willing to “lower the boom.” I am hoping for a bunch of highlight reel hits from Mr Pronger too . . .
“Minus the potential "hit to the head" I have no problem with Phaneuf’s hit.”
I do. His blades are a good three inches off the ice when he hits. Giordano also looked to have left his feet to jump into Morency (although Morency came off the bench to start the fight, which was bloody stupid).
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
That is knit picking. When players are moving at high speeds, colliding with one another there is a tendency for their skates to come off the ice. Ok, Phaneuf’s “blades are a good three inches off the ice” but he is not leaving his feet in a jumping motion to hit Okposo. Watch the Downie hit again. He leaves his feet and spears MacAmmond. That is an example of leaving your feet to make a hit. Big difference when compared to what Phaneuf did.

No question Downie’s hit was bad. But the Phaneuf hit was bad too. He left his feet to make the hit. Period. Downie deserved 25 games for that, without question. Phaneuf deserves a fine and suspension too.
I’m pretty sure there’s a rule in place stating this too. But I could be wrong.

Bottom Line he left his feet and made 1st contact with the guys head you don’t get concussions from checks to the chest. If that is the way legal as it was in the playoffs with Kunitz and Cooke running at Kimmo’s head that fine but when I don’t like those hits, the Stevens hits to the head, it clearly is intent to injure. I keep hearing hitting to the head shoulder or not is “something the league wants to cut down on” and this a perfect example of such a play. High hits to the head serve no purpose but to end your opponents season or career a clean BODY check would have accomplished the same thing without the risk of injury. A hit like that is illegal in the NFL where you move 5 times slower and have 2 times the head protection. Did you listen to the comments in the Downie video by the Ottawa announcers every point they make applies the same to the Phaneuf hit.
I disagree
Downie and Phaneuf hits are completely different. Phaneuf does not leave his feet leading with his shoulder. Okposo has his head down and possession of the puck. Downie leaves his feet, spears MacAmmond, and does it all away from the play. Yes, regardless of a hit, if it connects with the head there is a problem. But, from the youtube clip, I really can’t say certainly that it was a hit to the head. To me, it looks like Phaneuf catches Okposo clean in the chest. And if Phaneuf did hit Okposo’s head it was not a blatant head shot. Downie’s hit was cheap and dirty. It was like Donald Brashear’s elbow to the side of Blair Betts’ face during the Playoffs last year. Phaneuf merely laid a hit that, if Okposo’s head had of been up, would not have been as devastating.
I really don’t understand how you can claim that the two hits are similar. I would not be opposed to Phaneuf being fined or suspended as a way of staying consistent in cutting down on hits to the head but I really don’t think it was a blatantly high head shot. Imo, comparing these hits is like comparing apples to oranges.

this is what your supposed to do when someone has their head down

i am not saying Phaneuf hit is worse than Downie or he deserves 25 games but something lesser is certainly in order plus glorifying any hit where a guy leaves on a stretcher is not going to help cut down on head hunting
