While Stevens fell short of saying there is an open competition for the sixth defensive spot, it is clear that if [Ole-Kristian] Tollefsen, who has an NHL contract, and [Danny] Syvret, who has a two-way deal, outplay [Randy] Jones, the native of Quispamsis, New Brunswick could find himself placed on NHL waivers by the middle of next week.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren skirted around that possibility, but acknowledged center Blair Betts and left wing James van Riemsdyk have played well enough to earn NHL contracts. If that's the case, the Flyers' current salary cap cushion of $1.9 million will evaporate quickly, making Jones' salary expendable.

I am OKT with that. The 3rd pairing will have very little offensive upside (OKT and Parent) but should be dependable to not get abused during the little playing time they we be allotted. Pronger – Carle 25 minutes, Coburn – Timmonen 25 minutes, OKT and Parent get the remaining 10 minutes. Jones is not worth 2.7 million for ten minutes of ice time.
I don’t want to get my hopes up too high! However, this could be a very wonderful speculation! Now, they just need to ditch Cote . . .

It really is amazing that last year most people here still held out hope Jones could bring something back in a trade. Now, they’re fine with just getting rid of him.

A draft pick would suffice.
No doubt there is a team out there who can use a mobile defenseman. Since we’ve ditched a bunch of draft picks in the process of getting Pronger and Carcillo, we can always use those.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Oh yea that would be great. I would be perfecting happy with just dumping him but if we were able to doop some team into taking him and actually get something … anything really, in return I would ecstatic!
Maybe now that Homer knows Jones is expendable (whereas earlier in the summer he might not have considering he had not seen what the team was really gonna look like i.e. Betts, JvR, Pyorala and Syvet) he will shop Randy quite aggressively these next couple days and see if he can pull a rabbit out of his magic hat. You are right, there has to be some team out there with cap space that can use a mobile defenseman as a late addition to sure up their blueline. Jones isn’t completely worthless, just not worth $2mil as a 6th defensemen.

From CapGeek:
There are a ton of teams with $5 million plus available in cap space:
NJ, FLA, STL, TB, COL, LA, ATL, DAL, CLB, NAS, PHO, NYI. Take your pick. We’ve definitely had luck robbing NYI, PHO, NAS, and ATL, so I’d start there. More realistically, TB is always a solid trading partner.
