JVR, Pyorala, Syvret Crack Flyers Roster; Jones Sent to Phantoms
The Philadelphia Flyers announced their final 23 man roster today. Randy Jones is officially headed to the Adirondack Phantoms, two days after clearing waivers. Danny Syvret and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen both made the roster, meaning that the Flyers will carry seven defensemen on their NHL roster.
Finnish forward Mika Pyorala has made the Flyers roster as well. Pyorala had an impressive training camp and his hard work and good hockey sense impressed the coaching staff. He led the Flyers in scoring this preseason. Rookie James van Riemsdyk, also coming off of an impressive camp, has also made the roster.
Blair Betts is now a free agent. The Flyers did not complete a deal with the forward, meaning that he is now free to sign anywhere he chooses. Paul Holmgren had until today's 3 PM roster deadline to negotiate exclusively with Betts.
The Flyers have three goalies on the roster due to Brian Boucher's injury. When he comes back and Johan Backlund is sent to the Phantoms, the Flyers will have room for one more position player. If Betts is signed, which is looking unlikely at this point, he would presumably get that spot. Otherwise, they could look elsewhere for help.
With these moves, the Flyers sit $1.61 million under the salary cap, according to numbers from capgeek.com. After Backlund comes off the books, they'll sit $2.46 million under the cap.

And Manny Malhotra signed a one year deal for $700k.
Everyone who claimed Holmgren was trying to return to the Broad Street Bullies can stop now; it’s clear he’s trying to return to merely the pre-trap days.
Not signing either Betts or Malhotra is looking like a terrible decision by Homer. I don’t have as many problems with Powe as you do, but he’s nowhere near as good as Betts and if signing Betts/Malhotra meant making Powe a healthy scratch or sending him to the Phantoms, by all means, it should have been done.
So JVR starting as a Flyer this year huh? Pretty cool. Good for him.
What are you guys looking at or expecting stats wise from him?

Most of us don’t agree with Mario on JVR’s defense, Frank. We don’t have to drag you into that though.
20 goals could be possible. He’s going to have stellar linemates all season long.

The Flyers allowed 14 even strength goals in the preseason. JVR was on the ice for six of them. Draw whatever conclusions you think are appropriate.
Not to pick a side in either case, but who was on the ice with him also reflects. It’s not all on one guy – unless he was blatantly dismantled on his defensive game.

Fair enough, but he’s been playing with top line players. On ice when each goal was scored:
Goal 1, 9/16 – Giroux, Briere, Parent, and someone I don’t know who he is…
The next game the Flyers lost 4-0, but there are no stats, so no way of knowing what happened that night.
Goal 2 9/19 – JVR, Richards, Laliberte (minor leaguer), Coburn, Syvret
Goal 3 9/19 – JVR, Richards, Coburn, Jones (scored in OT)
Goal 4 9/22 – JVR, Pyorala, Giroux, Carle, Syvret
9/24 is a 2-1 win and JVR is not on ice for the goal against.
Goal 5 9/26 – JVR, Giroux, Asham, Tollefson, Parent (only goal of the game)
Goal 6 9/29 – JVR, Giroux, Asham, Parent, Syvret
Of the six goals and 24 total teammates on ice, only two were guys not on the roster, and only one more is a reserve. 21 of the 24 teammates were regular lineup Flyers.
Are you forgetting Jones is a minor leaguer? so I count 19 NHLers, 3 minor leaguers (Laliberte, Jones, and your unknown), and 1 reserve (Tollefsen).

Sure, we can pretend that. Even though you yourself admitted he’s a better player than the guys they kept.
It doesn’t make any significant change to the facts.
Agreed, but you can’t count both Syvret as an NHLer as well as the guy who’s job he took. So, whether you label Jones or Syvret as an AHLer, you can’t label them both as “regular lineup Flyers”. Just sayin.

The point I was making was from a mildly different angle; that JVR isn’t going to be out there with any better teammates in the regular season than he was in preseason.
But you’re correct.
For what its worth, I think Syvret should be the 7th man, not in the AHL.
Giroux was a constant
Hey I know we all love Giroux but he was out there for most of those goals as well so I guess he should be sent down as well. As center he has a lot more defensive responsibility than a winger so why is JVR hater MarioD calling for his head? Plus they were getting a lot more ice time then they will be getting when the regular season starts. In preseason the coach was not playing line matchups or putting out top D pairs with the Giroux line since he was giving the 3rd pairing more ice time. In the last game against the WIld with the full lineup JVR was out there a lot with Pronger and Carle and won’t get abused. If you want an all DEFENSE team full of muckers and grinders like the 80’s – 90’s Flyers teams that won how many stanley cups, ZERO I suggestion to MarioD is a move to NEWARK the home of exciting (NOT) Devils hockey.
Because Giroux has shown himself to be a very good defender, even when he was paired with Danny Briere.
Its possible he had a terrible preseason… but more likely that it was JVR.
How do you argue with a statement like that, out of the six players on the ice for the 6 goals scored against while JVR was on the ice, JVR is the sole person to blame for all of those goals. Not the center, goalie, or the either defensemen but of course it is all the rookie left wingers fault without a doubt. So JVR gets all the blame for the goals against and none of the credit for the goals which MarioD claims are lucky or garbage goals that he put in the net or assisted. I have to stop wasting my time with MarioD. Is there a way I can filter his posts?
The organization has plenty of depth between Powe and Lappy (and Kalinski and Ross) for 4th line center to at least wait and see if they can be as effective as a Blair Betts (or any other “defensive” forward specialist).
If it looks like that is a gaping hole after the first couple weeks, then they will have the option of signing someone like Betts, Peca, Zigomanis, etc…
They don’t need Betts to start the season.
No room?
No room for a guy like Betts but Cote is still there? This ranks up there trading Upshall for Carcillo.
I doubt it was about room – it can’t be when they have cap space and a contract slot – and since Homer was talking to him for weeks, it had to be about either money or years. Since money wasn’t an issue for the team, would Betts really have wanted a 2 or 3 year deal? Or would Homer really quibble between a $600k and an $800k cap hit if it was only 1 year?

My buddy Mario
I’d love to hear you say one fully positive post. It would really make my day. Cote will play 3 minutes a game against the division squads in place of a Powe or something like that. We need Riley when we play teams with heavyweights, he might not win em all, but him being on the ice (sometimes being a punching bag) regulates the game. He’s about two inches and twenty pounds lighter than most of these guys and holds his own. Say what you want about him but I love him on the roster.

Frank Seravelli
has some great quotes from both Homer and Betts here. He also says Homer was willing to do 1 or 2 year deal with Betts, so as Betts said, "I have no idea."

Another case of an agent not communicating with his player. Betts has given the impression that he wants to be here, be it for one or two or however many years. They would be stupid not to sign him for one or two years around that $600-800k cap hit range, and Homer and Stevens have said as much. The agent probably thinks he can milk Homer or get some 3-5 year deal for a fourth line player (not to understate Betts’ importance with faceoffs or the PK, but come on). This whole situation is a little disappointing because Betts would fill a large hole in the team very well, and if Homer can’t sign him here, I have no doubt he’ll be signed somewhere else very quickly.
Much agreed. One of the stories I read said the Flyers were willing to go $650k, but not higher. For a guy earning $615k last year, I can see not signing that deal 2 weeks ago. Maybe the Flyers would go up a little bit. But if Max Afinogenov signs for $800k, and Erik Christensen signs for $750k, Betts should ask for $750k, and the two should meet in the middle. But to haggle over $100k seems petty.

To be fair, there have also been plenty of cases where the player lies in the press about what he’s actually telling his agent…. Its not impossible that Betts said something like “Get me $750k or your fired” and expects his agent to get that from the Flyers. Then, in his head not contradicting himself, tells the press “I want to be a Flyer”.
100K seems petty?
100k cost us our beloved Scotty Upshall last year.

I always thought it was because he was going to be an RFA. And he signed for $1.5 million, so while it may have been for $100k, it was more than that soon after.

And Upshall wanted between $3-4m a year in a longer-term contract. He said he is a 30 goal scorer and deserves to be paid like one. Just don’t tell him he’s never scored more than 15 goals in a year. Upshall agreed to sign a one year deal for less than he wanted because Phoenix told him to put up (at which point he’ll get the money he wants) or shut up.
