- Get your misguided laugh tracks, which can't really be considered really recaps because nobody half of a brain saw what these people did behind their blue-tinted glasses: The Bergen Record, NY Post, NY Daily News, and SBN's Blueshirt Banter.
- Ray Emery looked a lot more sharp in his third game back. [NHL.com]
- Someone stole Ian Laperriere's teeth (in Louisiana, commence redneck jokes... now), and now he struggles when trying to help the needy. [SB Nation]
- Despite not putting up the points, Claude Giroux is still impressing. Yeah, real shocker. [Daily News]
- Laviolette on Asham: It's probably the best I've ever seen him play." Keep in mind that Coach had Arron in NY with the Isles. [Inquirer]

- "The Flyers will be lucky to make the playoffs" and therefore are shrugged off in this article about the Caps being the Penguins chief rival, despite not even being in the same division. [Beaver County Times]
- Kevin Allen says that the Carolina Hurricanes of 2009/10 look a like like the Flyers of 2005/06. [USA Today]

Torts vs. Media
Lol!!!! That transcript is hilarious.
Torts just needed to pick up his puck and go home. Your team got schooled and you threw a temper tantrum on the bench. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa………..
Holmgren quoted as saying he’s after a 5th or 6th defenseman at the trade deadline.
“There haven’t been many trades,” general manager Paul Holmgren said Thursday night. “It’s difficult because so many teams are operating at or near the cap. You have to make deals that match money for money, and you need the right partner to do that. I think everyone is going through that process, trying to find something that works.”
Holmgren is likely to be looking for some depth on his backline.
“Obviously we’re very comfortable with our first four guys (Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle),” Holmgren said. “After that it’s mix and match. Ryan has playoff experience, but he’s going through some issues; so that’s an area we probably will be focusing on.”

What does he have as assets though? A month ago, I’d have said, trade Carter, but now this team has seemed to “gel” again and I’d hate to see Holmgren pull an “Upshall” again.
Granted the 5th and 6th guys (on defense) are terrible.

Carcillo is much more productive for this team than Upshall ever was, we finally have a legitimate 4th line. Right now Carbomb, Betts and Lappy are one of the best checking lines in the NHL. Upshall may be a more skilled player, but quite frankly he was useless here since he wasn’t good enough for our top lines. Plus without Powe we pretty much have his replacement. Carcillo has been one of our most consistent players, heck he is a +5 as a “goon.”

I absolutely agree with you and I think you really hit the nail on the head. The problem with Upshall was that he wanted to be a top 6 forward (and on a lot of teams he would be) but with the Flyers depth at forward, Upshall just wan’t going to crack the top 6. I know he somewhat accepted the role of an agitator (especilly in the 07-08 Playoffs) but he was always holding out to be partnered with the top lines.
Carcillo on the other hand knows he is a bottom 6 forward and is certainly one of the better true agitators in the game. His role is clear (as we saw last night in NY) and he does a great job at it. Obviously, productivity for Carcillo is not necessarily in goals. What he brings to the table are not stat based but just as crucial for this team to succeed (i.e. what he did last night against the Rangers. Did you see how badly he got them off their game?)
I think just having that affirmation in player roles helps the clarity on the ice of who is supposed to be doing what.
With that said, I have no idea what the Flyers could give up for a 6th defensemen without ruining the present mojo of this team…

No, what I meant by Holmgren “Upshalling” the team is making a panic move because he clearly has no idea how to manage the cap and trading away someone and ruining the chemistry of the team.
As far as the upshall trade itself, I can get behind it if it’s a straight up move, but Homer had to throw a pick in to the deal, which was ridiculous. As Upshall has proved this season, he’s been more than worth the price of Carcillo alone, nevermind an additional pick.

Oh yea I knew what you were saying. I totally agree with you about Holmgren "Upshalling." I like that saying haha

Would you trade Carter for Frolov, Jones, and a 1st?
I think thats the only deal that works at this point.
ugh, they don’t have someone marginally better than or equal to Jones? Frolov and a 1st are good.

Would you rather have Sean O’Donnell? He’s also a UFA and makes basically the same money. But he’s 37 years old.
Jones has chemistry with these players and can slip right onto the team.
I’d rather have Jack Johnson. HAHA.
How about Teubert? Seems to be a decent prospect that maybe the organization is a bit down on.

Jack Johnson doesn’t?
I know it doesn’t, but I’m against trading anyone at this point anyway. They should have signed Vanaanen before he flew off to Europe.

Jones has played well with Los Angeles so far, too. Well, at least from what I’ve read.

Well according to the idiot who wrote the article for the Beaver County Times said “Granted, the Flyers, Devils and Capitals are in the Atlantic Division and things have — and always will — get heated,”
Maybe that is why he thinks the rivalry between the Caps and Pens is so great…because they are both in the Atlantic division…does anyone check facts anymore before publishing things?
I hear that defenseman Darrol Powe is playing well lately.

Haha, I called the Metro about that editor and he told me he’d call me back after checking with his writer.
He never did.

I love this quote:
With apologies to the Flyers’ sideshow duo of Danny Carcillo and Scott Hartnell, they’ve got nothing on OvechkinWho is their right mind is comparing Scott Hartnell and Dan Carcillo to Alexander Ovechkin? As aspects of rivalries go, this is like comparing apples to oranges . . .
This is a good one too:
Pittsburgh fans waited eight months to let Ovechkin, but they definitely let him hear it Thursday night.Yea and Flyers’s fans chanting “Crosby Sucks” is so ridiculous. "Stuff Ovechicken", “Bet you didn’t know what Ovechkin means in Russian?” Really, that is the best you can do?
That was evident on T-shirts seen outside Mellon Arena (Bet you didn’t know what Ovechkin means in Russian?). It was evident on the sign around the F Balcony that read "Stuff Ovechicken" and it was evident by the cascade of boos that greeted the reigning MVP when he skated off after the pre-game skate (Marian Hossa never had it so good).
Oh and this:
Martin Brodeur and the Devils? Nope. New Jersey has certainly stymied the Penguins this season but . . .But, but, but . . . I love how the writer tries to discount the Devils despite the fact that the Penguins have yet to beat the Devils this year and managed to score a meager 2 goals in four meetings with the Devils, being shutout twice by Brodeur. As if gettting nothing less then dominated for 4 games is irrelevant.
Remember when we were talking about superiority complexes between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia? I feel like Pittsburgh has a new superiority complex for Overchkin. That might be a stretch but this article sure gives that impression.
by Mitchell Green on Jan 22, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions
It mainly comes from the Pittsburgh media; this superiority complex stuff. Just this past year when the Pirates had their 17th consecutive losing season, breaking the record held by our very own Phillies, one of the Pitt writers wrote, “But at least the Pirates still aren’t as bad as the Phillies.” I sh*t you not. The whole crux of his article was that these are tough times for Pirates’ fans now, but man, oh, man, did the Phillies realllllly suck 50 years ago.
It’s as if 2008 never happened!
Thought I’d add this to the Morning Fly By. Anybody else see this? Alex Auld’s Major Screw Up

haha, yeah. Goalie plunders like this are always hysterical.
Did you see when that almost happened to Brian Elliott? He dove back and got lucky.

Alright, who's from Antigua?
Check this out:
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/broadstreethockey.com
We’re the 167th most popular site in Antigua and Barbuda. 7.5 percent of our traffic comes from there, compared to 4.5 percent coming from Canada.
What the hell?

I like how when you click on Antigua to see what the top 100 sites are there, it tells you there’s no data available for that country.
