Tuesday Morning Fly By: Parent's Surgery and Joni Pitkanen 'Superstar'

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Last night's NHL scores... PIT 4 - NYR 2; STL 2 - CGY 0; VAN 3 - BUF 2
  • A lot of stories on Ryan Parent's surgery yesterday, which was a success. [Inquirer] [CSNPhilly] [Daily News]
  • The other common story was Coach Laviolette's interesting practice:  "The forwards, and some of the defensemen, were playing with sticks whose blades had been chopped in half.  Guys in front of the net were wearing shin pad as players teed-off from the points." [CSNPhilly] [Daily News]
  • JFein put this up in a fanshot yesterday, but the Flyers defended their actions on Twitter against ESPN. [The700Level]
  • Behind the Net asks "How Little Can One Man Possibly Play?" Riley Cote isn't on the list, but I asked in the comments.  He's "Close." [Behind The Net]
  • News out of the AHL yesterday surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes affiliate - Albany River Rats - appearing to be going to Charlotte.  How this affects the Phantoms, go to Tim McManus' Post-Star site. [SB Nation] [Post-Star]
  • A clever Shakespearean spin on the Flyers latest loss: "And so goes the tale of the Montague’s and the Capulet’s, a modern day tragedy with two star-crossed hockey players, acted out in the NHL rinks of the Penguins and the Flyers. Every plot twist and turn is present, even the biting." [Hockey Outsiders]
  • Last night, Travis discovered how awesome NHL Game Center Live is, mostly thanks to CSNPhilly's Sarah Baicker, but here's another ringing endorsement.  [Puck The Media]
  • Lastly, former Flyer Joni Pitkanen is apparently a highly sought-after piece for the "rebuilding" Hurricanes.  They even call him "the Finnish superstar." [Canes Country]

Hilarious
Juliet, played most auspiciously, by Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby (come on the parallels are endless) is also central to the feud.

The people on Canes Country seem to think that Joni is like a younger version of Lidstrom or something. Most of them even said they wouldnt trade him for a top 5 pick.

I dont get it. Hes not even having that good of a season.

I was really hoping somebody would comment on this. I included it simply because of the ridiculous factor.

He’s a decent defenseman who does a lot offensively. If people really covet a Mike Green-lite, go ahead. But he’s nothing special.

I’d rather have Joni than Mike Green. One of those players plays good defense.

Mike Green isn’t as bad at defense as everybody thinks. When he got snubbed from Team Canada, there were posts everywhere on the subject.

I’m aware.

His play consistently demonstrates, however, his total lack of interest in playing defense.

Mike Green is not good defensively, but you would be hard pressed to find many decent defensive blue liners who can pot 30 goals in this era. Green has a unique skill set that is pretty much unmatched in this league.

And leads the league in ice time, no less.
