The National Hockey League has fined Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Carcillo $2,500 for a throat-slash gesture made towards the Toronto Maple Leafs bench on Wednesday night.

Carcillo, who is a considered a repeat offender under the NHL's disciplinary guidelines, made the gesture after scoring his second-period goal to put the Flyers up 3-0.

We see progress in the little guy and hope he can reach his potential, but the League doesn’t seem to share our view.

The way he’s playing of late, I’ll pay the fine. If I had that kind of cash laying around that is.

500 people chipping in five bucks would get the job done. BSH gets, on average, between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors a day.

I would chip in $5 in a second. This could be an awesome thing. I highly suggest it if you think 499 other people would be on board.

Vote in the poll. If we get 500 people, we’ll collect the money.

Does Bettman have nothing better to do? A day late too on the fine. Maybe ther’re still trying to figure out if Gange’s goal went it. Maybe they shoud fine those idiots in the “war room” for F’ing up

Much like the NFL, the NHL focuses on granular stuff instead of things that could really help to fix their sport, like improving officiating or getting rid of those clubs that are dragging down the rest of the league.

I’m sure Bettman is trying to figure out how to fine him for the “devil horns” gesture he makes now….

Wow, I would consider this a step in the right direction that he is not suspended for a game. Usually it is confounding how they levy punishment on the Orange and Black. The throat slash is more dangerous than the incidental contact to that diving frauds helmet last year and we know how that went. Stevens could probably use those shekels back right now.

by MJDII on Jan 8, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions

While it is a meaningless, trivial, gesture that carcillo made, he can’t be doing it. There are other ways to get fired up out there without making (and I use this phrase very loosely) “death threats”. I know there was nothing to the gesture and that there was no actual threat to anyone on the Leafs bench, but in this PC world you have to be careful what you say and do. Overreaction by the league? Definetly. Should Carcillo have known being under constant surviellance by the leagues disciplinary commitee (aka Colin Campbell and the rest of his Gestapo) that this might cause a bit of a stir? Without a question. Just be glad he wasn’t suspended for it.

I have to wonder if this was someone other than Carcillo, would they get fined?

Oh Ovechkin or Crosby, hell no. Donald Brashear sure why not. You should check out the Discipline Flow Chart someone made up a little while ago. It’ll all make perfect sense.

I can’t figure out how to do graphics on SBN, but here’s a link to that flow chart: clicky clicky

I beg to differ. They would fine Ovechkin. Crosby is too busy walking on water to to be fined though.

You know what I’d like to see in all leagues(NBA NFL NHL etc) is when a Referee screws up, bad cal whatever that they get fined. I therefore fines last nights ref $1000 for missing Gagnes goal.

by Crosby sucks on Jan 8, 2010 2:46 PM EST reply actions

Ahh, now there’s progressive thinking. But why fine the ref (or why fine the ref that much), when in all actuallity it should be the War Room in Toronto getting fined. While a ref has a tough job of always trying to be in a perfect position to make the right call on every play while moving on the ice and trying to focus on the whole ice, which is actually really hard for any of you that have reffed at lower levels. The twits sitting in their comfy leather chairs with 8 million views on the best equipment the NHL can buy (probably a step lower then the NFL) in Toronto’s infamous “War Room” should be the ones to blame. It seems like broadcasters on second view seem to be able to make the right call 99% of the time, while these putz’s in Toronto can’t seem to make the right call on the easiest of reviews.

Like the way u think man. This year has be absolutely horrid when it comes to refs in all sports! So bad in fact that most of us know about the three SEC college Football refs that got fined for such a horribly officiated game this season! I was so glad to see this as refs do this many times a year, but get away with it and dont get punished! Yet, when a coach, GM or player criticizes a ref (s) in all right due to a horribly called and lop-sided game, the person who criticizes gets fined and punished! There is a difference between human error and flat out bad/lop-sided calls! Fining refs would also help hinder crooked refs. The ones that bet, play favorites, and get paid off (not saying this happens everyday, but it does in fact happen more times than not)! Point is, the league be it, NHL, NBA, NFL ect..fine players inorder to scare/deter them away from doing something they view as “Unprofessional”! Bad officiating/lop-sided officiating is also “Unprofessional”! So if they are gonna fine players and coaches, then they should also fine refs! The refs control the game as they make the calls and determine if ur actions are within the rules! Refs more times than not can determine the outcome of the game! Im NOT saying all refs are bad! Many are fair and square.

"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."

screw finning a ref. i say all the fans get together and sue the league for emotional distress caused by screwed up calls from the officals and everyone above.

And while we are at this idea I want to be the one that hands the invoice to Leon Stickle, then I want to kick him in the nuts. I am still friggin’ bitter.

Im not going to come up with some flowery way to say it, thats just stupid.

by philiafan14364 on Jan 8, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Haha, maybe, but could you explain your point. Our ideas, while maybe not the best, are at least an attempt to fix (and when I say fix I mean ramble collectively) the problems we see. If your going to attact are ideas at least explain why, or come up with your own.

by Pondhockey on Jan 8, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, fine.

Ive been making a “throat-slash gesture” since I was like 4 years old. It clearly doesnt mean anything besides “haha, we win”, the same message as a simple fist pump. Would you fine that?

Next time the Flyers are up big, Carcillo should go near the other teams bench and “scratch” his nose with the middle finger just to see what happens.

by philiafan14364 on Jan 8, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Oh your definetly right, but in the world we live in, it’s just not exceptable, whether you feel it means nothing or not. And when your already on a short leash from the league you don’t want to being doing anything that might draw their attention.

by Pondhockey on Jan 8, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

Its really sad just how true this is.

by philiafan14364 on Jan 8, 2010 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

That is just too funny and also too true. Although I think a new box should be opened for Crysby, Is it Sid? What he do?…..punch someone in the sack? unintentional…. and never suspend him……….

Did you mean our inane ideas were dumb or the actual gesture?

by MJDII on Jan 8, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think he thinks it’s stupid that Carcillo was fined. At least that’s the way I read it.

by doubleh on Jan 8, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

I thought he meant just the overall gesture as unnecessary. At least, I rather liked my idea of kicking Leon Stickle in the nuts.

by MJDII on Jan 8, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, no, I actually havent read through your so called inane ideas because, honestly, I dont think theres that much to discuss here. Fining that action is so dumb its funny. I think the discussion begins and ends there.
