Isn’t there some “pending physical” or at least some kind of physical required to validate the contract like in a trade?

Homer says – in the Inquirer article – “We had an MRI done. It didn’t show anything that was an issue”
The question then becomes, did it show “anything” at all?

If Leighton was already having these problems at the end of last season, and during the summer, I can’t believe the MRI would have been negative. I believe it would have shown the bulging disc, and perhaps it was ignored by team management as not a problem. Well, now it’s a $3.1M problem.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I’ll believe them when they say he didn’t have a bulging disc in June. I’ll believe them when they say he didn’t have a bulging disc on June 30th. I won’t believe that they thought he was perfectly healthy before signing the contract.

Well, if he was having the pain and leg problems back in June, then I don’t see how the bulging disc could not have shown up on the MRI. I had a bulging disc causing similar problems to what Leighton describes, and I went to the orthopedist and with a simple X-ray (not even an MRI), they immediately saw it on the film and made the diagnosis.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I know nothing about bulging discs, but I’d imagine a guy can have back pain and strained muscles before actually having a bulging disc.

Yeah but if they did an MRI then the MRI should show the bulging disc. It’s a matter of looking.

On the Bob write up
I’m surprised no one has mentioned how Bob has a tendency to make himself small when he goes in to the butterfly. It doesn’t happen all the time, but there were more than a few times he would let his upper body drop when in the butterfly. This is obviously something that can be worked on, and shouldn’t be a huge deal moving forward, but it’s something I have noticed, and was surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the Meltzer writeup.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Yeah, you know, I’ve noticed that too. Not surprising since the KHL doesn’t have nearly as many top-quality shooters. I agree that it’s nothing major, but another thing to work on nonetheless. I have to imagine it’s been great for Bob from a learning level to be with Reese all the time.

Even if they want to ride Bob this year, give it to the guy who was here for the playoffs. As someone attending the game, I’d be very disappointed to not see Boosh get the start.

Im going and I’d rather see Bobs. Nothing against Boosh, but Bobs is like a shiny new toy an I just want to get my hands on it.

I’ve seen him live, and I’ll continue to see him live throughout the year…and you could as well if you buy tickets to any number of games throughout the year. The team is dropping a banner, give it to the guy that helped get you to that banner.

Understandable, and I probably will see Bobs again anyway. But I still want to see him tonight. I’ll probably see Boosh thursday anyway.

Even though I’m not a big Boosh guy, this honestly pisses me off.

I see their reasoning, they want to show off Bob to the home crowd. The new, fast, shiney goalie is too much for them to resist! I have a feeling boosh isn’t very happy about that either. It’s like choosing to buy the Iphone 3gs, tried and true, or the iphone 4. Of course their going to pick the newer one. (and ya boosh should start, i mean he got us to playoffs last year)

Obviously
That’s why I said:
If they go with Bob again on Thursday, i will be less upset, but if they go with Boosh on Thursday, this honestly makes no sense to me.
Frankly if he plans on starting Boosh on Thursday, this decision doesn’t make any sense what so ever. Tampa Bay is far more familiar with Boosh than the Avs, so why would you split the games up that way. Give Boosh the start against the Avs, where he should have more of an advantage in theory, and give Bob the start against the Bolts. This way it makes sense both strategically, and he gets his banner night. The only reason why I’m assuming this is that they went Bob/Boosh in the first 2…
HOWEVER, if they are starting Bob for both games, I can buy it as giving him the shot to take the reigns, and won’t be that upset with it.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I hope they start Boosh on Thursday, otherwise the sign I’m making Erin has no relevancy.

I like this, if for only that it may help push the heavy weight, lightly skilled players out of the league.

Bob
I totally understand and agree with the fact that he needs more seasoning and needs to learn the north american game. But it seems like some people on here are nitpicking the hell out of his game just because they would rather see Boucher start. I personally like Boosh as a person but he is not the answer for a long term goalie, neither is Leighton in my opinion. We obviously know Bob needs to learn and grow as a goalie but it seems counter productive to be so down on him. I’m not saying we need to over confident either, I would like to watch him grow but come here and not see so many negative remarks about his game
I’m nitpicking the hell out of his game because I want to see him improve. Honestly, I’m excited to see Bob start. I know that this team is just continuing the seemingly decade-old tradition of pushing Boosh aside, but we don’t have goalie prospects to watch try and transform themselves into an NHL goalie all the time. It’s fun, but I think we need to continue to keep our expectations tempered.
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
by Ben Feldman on Oct 11, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t agree with the pushing Boosh aside, the flyers did ressurect his career and gave him a chance to get back in the NHL when no one else did. They also gave him the starting job in 2001 and he didn’t perform. I also think we need to keep our expectations tempered but we know he has a lot to work on coming over from Russia and it seems like every thing that he does wrong is talked about when we know there will be growing pains. Now, I was all for him being sent to the Phantoms to learn but he wasn’t and it doesn’t look to be changing until atleast Leighton comes back.
it seems like every thing that he does wrong is talked about
Such as?
And honestly that is people trying to get a handle on the kid, figure out what he brings, and if he does have limitations right now, are they easily correctable. Plus Geoff linked to 3 positive articles, and one article that listed possible issues, while still mentioning positives. I don’t really read much negativity.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I’m not necessarily talking about today’s articles. This was just the first time I was able to comment. I’m not going searching through prior threads but there were some things that I have read that made me feel this way. I also want to get a handle on him but we can’t expect the world from him and some people are beating that point into the ground it seems.
I guess I disagree with your perception then. I don’t see much point in commenting on the site if we aren’t going to talk about player performances. I can get plenty of ra ra comments or negadelphia from people around the office. But coming here gives me the opportunity to discuss what each player brings to the table and what their shortcomings are…sometimes we nitpick, but that nitpicking is done to promote the conversation.
Is this the right room for an argument?
May I ask what you are referring to? B/c really all I read as far as “negativity” are people, who want Bob to succeed, so they are worried about the Flyers organization not handling him the right way. This team has had a history of mishandling goaltenders, so I wouldn’t read that as being negative about the kid, but rather wanting him to have a long successful career with this team, and voicing their concerns about rushing him.
But honestly, I’d like to know specifically what you are referring to so I can better understand your comment.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I guess the negativity comes from the whole he shouldn’t be here to begin with. Like I said above I also was for him being with the Phantoms rather than being brought right up. What is done is done though and I think we should enjoy watching him mature rather than nitpick every little thing. I personally am not on the Boucher side and since Bob is here he should get minutes also. At this point its trial by fire and I trust Lavvy to make the right decisions.
I guess the negativity comes from the whole he shouldn’t be here to begin with.
That conversation ended a while ago. Then it switched to the need to start him in the opener against the Pens. No one is saying Bob hasn’t earned his spot here, so I’m really confused, again, as to what you are referring to?
Is this the right room for an argument?

If the past 18 months have taught me anything, the role of franchise goaltender in the NHL is becoming obsolete. Niemi wasn’t one and he was dropped by his team mere weeks after winning the Cup. Lundqvist and Luongo are franchise goalies and how many Cups have they won?
My point is Bob isn’t a franchise goalie yet. However, he doesn’t need to be one to be effective for the Flyers. So far, he’s as effective as Boosh and that’s more than good enough for now. Bob will struggle this year, but EVERY starter in this league struggles at times.
… should have said, “Bob will struggle at times this year.”
by memphisbrando on Oct 11, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
True and false. I dont think teams need to spend more then say 3 mil on a goalie, but you cant just put in any old scrub either. I would say Boosh is at the lowest level you can have for a cup winning goalie, above Leighton IMO, but I think Bobs can be above Boosh before the season ends.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Yeah, that Brodeur guy definitely can’t be considered franchise…he kind of sucks…but I guess his success wasn’t in the era you referred to anyway…
But I do agree to an extent. I think as the goalie market resets itself, you may see some more of the premier goalies lifting the cup. But right now, the money spent on a “franchise goalie” is better spent on a decent goalie and upgrading the defense. If the market drops for goaltenders, then you might see some more success. But as it always has been, if your goaltender gets hot in the playoffs, that may be all you need anyway.
As we all said in the off season, pretty much anyone can start behind this defense. The only concern is mismanaging an asset, and frankly none of us can answer that one anytime soon.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Im still expecting every goalie we have to chip in and get as as far as they can until trade deadline and we lick up a real goalie.
5-6 mil is outrageous but 3-3.7 for someone who can be a franchise goalie is worth it.

The Eagles had their many years in the sun. It’s only fair that they now share the spotlight. I can’t believe how many Eagles fans were dissing the Phillies because they think only football should be played on Sundays. Remind me of the douches that can’t wait to bash soccer at every turn.

Well, if I were an NBA fan in this city I’d be fairly bitter, too. The Sixers are the forgotten team and have pretty irrelevant for years now. Even when they were good, college basketball was king.

I ust think it’s funny when I say I would rater watch say the kings and vancover play a playoff game over mami and lakers(only teams I can think are good), and people look at me like I’m freaking crazy. When I was at ASU, my friends would always ask how good the sixers were gona do, and I always had to explain why phillly doesn’t care about the sixers. I compared us to the penguins in pitt, we only care about them when they win. We are fake sixers fans, I’ll admit that.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Speak for yourself. Although they have been tough to watch, I’ve actually become a bigger Sixer fan the emptier the stadium gets. I go to more games than I ever did before, and I follow them far closer than before as a result. However, I’m probably the exception, not the rule.
Is this the right room for an argument?
do you live in the stadium? Haha you sound like your there every night.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Haha no. But I used to never go to Sixers games, and was a casual fan at best. But since all the promotions (via Flyers tickets) and cheap seats became available I started going to some games. As I went, and had a decent time, I got to know the game a little better, and wanted to follow the team closer. So, by them being bad, that gave me better “access” and increased my interest as a fan. On the other hand, with how expensive Eagles games are, and the limited tickets available, my interest in football has decreased from what it was in past years. Similarly, with the Phillies, each year I get to go to less and less games b/c of how popular they have become, so I haven’t followed them as closely as I did pre-world series. I’m still a bigger Phillies fan than I am Eagles or Sixers, but as it gets harder to get tickets to games, I lose some of my “passion” for the team.
Not sure if that makes sense at all. Granted I want the teams to be successful, I’m not saying I don’t want them to be…I just like being able to afford to go to some games. Hockey will always get a pass since I was skating since I could walk.
Is this the right room for an argument?
do you have any stats for this or can you direct me to any? my friend and i have an ongoing argument(years) about which is the better sport, which one draws more fans, which one dominates in philly(i think that’s obvious but then he brings ncaa into the mix). and he always vehemently argues that basketball requires much more skill and hockey is not a real sport

I fought that easiest way to define sport and shut up everyone who brings up this argument is this simple definition.
A sport has to have another player or team actively trying to prevent you from achieving your goal. Basically there needs to some short of defense involved.
By this definition Golf/Bowling is not a sport, neither is anything that is judged. Those are games or athletic competitions or civil unions or whatever PC term you what to use.
Nascar however is a sport by this definition so all those people are happy and leave you alone.
I don’t want to start this stupid argument but if you agree with that definition it is a great way to end the argument next time it comes up at a bar during the Masters or PBA championship or the Olympics.
A sport has to have another player or team actively trying to prevent you from achieving your goal.
Basically there needs to some short of defense involved.
Those are two different things. Because in golf, for example, your goal is to win, and every other player is also trying to win, therefore trying to prevent you from achieving your goal.
Just a nitpick, but that second part needs incorporated in your first sentence, b/c that is not self evident as you imply with the word “basically”.
I also find it hilarious that by your definition, curling qualifies as a sport, but golf does not. I’m not trying to take a stand here, I just think it’s funny.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Actively or you could use physically trying to prevent you. That might remove Curling but keep Nascar.
For the record I Golf a lot or used to before I became a parent and can afford it anymore, damn daycare. I hate NASCAR and never Curled.
so you would consider goldeneye a sport? Ans all thses years thought I was just a loser, now I’m an athletic freak haha.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
BTW, the Eagles site has lots of people bashing this today. I just don’t understand why you have to bash one sport in order to appreciate another. You get guys asking, “Where is the loyalty (to the Eagles)”? My response was to note all the Eagles chants Phillies teams had to endure when they weren’t winning—where was the loyalty to the Phils? Why can’t someone be a fan of multiple teams? It’s not like it’s cheating to love a baseball, hockey, football and basketball team equally.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Seriously, I view “die hard” Eagle fans to be the most disloyal of all Philadelphia sports fans. They are the only fans, that come into another one of the city’s sport team’s building and start a chant for another one of the city’s teams. Eagles fans need to stop living in a fantasy world and start respecting the fact that there are other teams in this town, and if you don’t care about them, at least show them some respect….especially when they are continually out performing your personal team of choice.

No Washington?! But they’re Hockeytown! Or HockeyCapital!

Ugh, don’t get me started. Living down here is bad enough with all the Caps talk, but after the decisive win over the Devils on Saturday, there’s alot of annoying swagger among the bandwagoners, er, I mean, fans….
Sarauj, Latvija!
Im sad to know that by the end of the night either the Devils or the Penguins will win their 1st game

So am i screwed or not? what time are the Phils supposed to play on Saturday? I got tickets to the Flyers game for my birthday, which means Pauls boycotting is over, and im not trying to never be able to go to a game. (paul is my dad and the last few games hes tried to go to he couldn’t because the Phils were playing and he couldn’t park, so he “boycotted” going to games last year)
i knew that but sharp…? im a little slow today….

Since you are still in school, I’ll use this example: class starts today, 8am sharp. It means right at or on the dot, etc.
Is this the right room for an argument?
hahah sorry wow that was a dumb question on my part. But it wasn’t nessicarily in that context with a time so i guess maybe it wasnt uber dumb. How do you know im still in school? Since I’m on a dumb question streak, how do i put pictures in a comment? The picture box thingy didn’t work

Based on our conversation about the women’s league at Aston, and how you said you are probably too young (just an FYI on that front, I believe they have something for all different ages of women there).
As far as the picture goes…just make sure you have the right URL in there and that it is an active link.
