The Flyers have many issues to star t this season. Under achievers, bad chemistry, poor power play, etc. But in this article I'd like to give my opinion on why there are these issues and ways that may fix them. I've just seen a couple of comments on this site and on csnphilly.com, and I'd just like to give my complete analysis of the problems swarming the Flyers.
-The Struggles of Mike Richards. There is no doubt that the captain has been having difficulties this season. To be honest, I belive that the biggest problem facing the captain is the absence of Simon Gagne. Richie had Gagne on his left for the past two years, and Richards will have to get used to Gags not being there. Another thing is that Richards does not mold well with Carter. Richards should have Carcillo and Zherdev on his line. Two hard hitters and a finnisher. The answer is NOT stripping Richards of the captaincy. That would lower his confidence even more, and would create even more tension in the lockeroom seeing how that was the problem last season.
-The absence of Nikolay Zherdev. To be honest, Zherdev has no role on this team, period. He does not fit the Flyers' system, and has almost zero chemisty with any other player. The ONLY reason Zherdev was brought in was to provide a short term solution to the loss of Gagne. I think Zherdev has to play with Richards in and effort to get him going.
-The disappoiting power play. This has been a disgrace this season. The Flyers refuse to shoot the puck and are obsessed with these down low plays. The Flyers need to start blasting shots from the point with traffic and get these fancy down low plays out of their playbook. Honestly the Flyers have three defensemen in Kimmon Timonen, Chris Pronger and Andrej Meszaros who all have hard shots from the back-end. Scott Hartnell is good for the front of the net, and should be out there a good amount on the power alongside Danny Briere and Claude Giroux.
