Nikolai Zherdev was finally told he had to speak to the media in Philadelphia and not duck interviews or hide behind a translator. Zherdev came out of a meeting with GM Paul Holmgren saying he would talk to everybody "but the Russian reporter" and he pointed at Flyers.com [sic] writer Tim Panaccio. When told Panaccio was Italian, through and through, Zherdev shrugged. "Well, he looks like he’s in the Russian mob."

Whoops, just noticed Ben Feldman had this in the FanShots already. Oh well.

Haha, no worries. I don’t think any of us post things so that our names are on the front page.

Something else from that article
- Flyers coach Peter Laviolette isn’t a big Daniel Carcillo fan. He likes his toughness, but feels that he takes too many penalties, and is not as versatile as winger Andreas Nodl.
I would have been better if it had a quote or source. Carcillo played well last game, maybe him and Nodl could be in the same lineup one day…

Mourning Gagne forever.
Yeah, here’s a quote for you from Lavi:
"I thought Danny played a strong game. Physically, he was trying to bang bodies and he got going in that fight. It seemed like they came out and they had some good skating legs and they’re coming off a couple of decisions and they probably wanted to turn the tide on that. They came out ready to play and I thought Danny did a terrific job with his energy and getting involved in the game."
I trust that more than an unattributed mention in an Edmonton article.

Why do people think that Panotch looks like he is in the mob? Z is not the only one who has thought this.
Of course all us Italians are really in the mob, so I guess it makes sense. ;)
The bullet of justice caps evil's ass!
Shouldn’t he have just said, “I know a guy who knows a guy”? ’Scuse me, I gotta talk to that guy about that thing…

When I was little, I thought that was the case.
I’m Italian (half, anyway) and just assumed that, when my father had to stay after work for a “meeting,” he was doing business with Nicky Scarfo.
Most of you are too young to remember who that is, but oh well.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I don’t generally trust the “more hockey” from the Edmonton Journal, they don’t quote or cite anything in it. Not to mention i think Lavi is actually a huge Carcillo fan. Carcillo wasn’t playing like himself the first few games it was like someone gave him a lobotomy, but last night he played his game and i think Lavi will reward that.
Not to mention Panaccio doesn’t write for “Flyers.com”
who the (bleep) does zherdev think he is? am i the only one that thinks this guy is a huge prick? no need for these snide remarks. i miss seemone, regardless of the cap hit and zero points/-8..
Firstly I think people forget exactly how highly touted Nik Zherdev was in the juniors. He was meant to be a superstar, so he might still have that background.
Secondly, I don’t think you can derive that he’s a prick from this little exchange…..
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

i 100% recognize that zherdev was a blue chip prospect. i also think he is a russian diva. the prick comment comes from more than just this article. his rep precedes him… nobody liked him in columbus or nyc and it’s quickly trending that way here. i hope he gets his act together because i think he has the talent to put in 30-40 goals.
Ahh OK I see where you are coming from. To be fair, I’m still giving him a shot. I know a lot of the fans didn’t like him in NYC and Columbus, but unless we hear that a lot of the players thought he acted like a ‘Russian diva’ I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt on being a prick. It does seem like he’s wasted his talent, and doesn’t work hard enough on and off the ice. We’ve been spending an entire offseason since Gagne was traded hoping that Lavvy can fix that.

You can’t judge him yet, he hasn’t even done anything wrong. Why listen to others, when you can form an opinion yourself? Maybe they don’t like him because they wish they still had him. In Columbus it was Hitch, who everyone has a problem with. In NY it was salary issues which doesn’t have anything to do with his play. Like I said in a fan post everybody loves to use the word enigma but maybe just give him a chance. He did just come from the KHL and is on a brand new team. You can’t be mad about the quickness of his cultural adaptation.
Well, Panatch isn’t exactly a sweetheart, either, so I for one find it rather humorous that someone’s giving Gramps the whatfor.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
I think the whole team should pick up and run with it. Could be a great running joke. And I would not be surprised if Pronger did put him up to it.

That would be really fucking awesome.

Yeah it would. I’m dreaming of every player’s answer to any one of his questions being, “I don’t know if I want to talk to you Tim.”
So Carchidi and Panotch can get together and write an article about the immature athletes of this city…

This is awesome. I laughed.
Panotch’s next tweet will be something like:
I luv making illegal turns on Broad Street while ppl call me a Russian mobster from their cars
