Meanwhile, our dear dear friends from Dirty Jerz got outscored 9-2 this weekend.
I guess they can be consoled by the fact that one of their 2 goals came from the 15-year, 100-million-dollar man? Aye ta taye, if it isn’t Billy O’Kovalchuk! He gives the Devils something with a bite in it. Puts them all into it, damn his soul. Father, Son and Holy Ghost and Jakes M’Carthy.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
were the Flyers discussing Simon Gagne...NO
So the mystery player that was a ~$5.5mil contract…I guess it had to be one of Gagne, Richards, and Carter if you look at cap hits. I can only see Richards and Carter bringing that kind of value in a trade. I highly doubt anyone was giving a 4th overall draft pick up for Gagne
However, if you look at salaries, Carter’s salary this year is in fact $5.5mil exactly. And if we are going by salary, that should rule out Richards, who is making $6.4 mil, and Gagne who is making the same as his cap hit ($5.25)
Yeah, I think they were talking Carter, and it would make sense b/c Columbus needs a center.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I think you are correct, sir. Especially since I gave The Cannon a scouting report on Carter June 21st.

And remember, Homer said last year that The Flyers would not trade Jeff Carter “This Season.”
I took that to mean that they would not trade him last season, but might be open to trading him THIS season if they could not negotiate a contract extension, or if the return was worthwhile.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Plus, the obvious: there’s no way Gagne fetches the #4 overall. He was never that good, and he’s old, and he’s under contract.
Excuse me!
He was never that good

Hrmm, I am being quite serious. I was never that big of a Gagne fan, didn’t really shed a tear when he left, feel no remorse for him leaving, but 5-6 years ago he was the bees knees. A late first round pick would have definitely fetched him, and if he doesn’t have those injuries later, I’d venture to say that he’s putting up 60-70 points a year currently

Considering Umberger brought in the 19th pick, Gagne probably would have fetched a hell of a lot more back in his prime around the 2006/07 season.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I think there’s a larger difference between a 15-20 pick and a top 5 pick. It’s just my opinion, but given fairly consistent injury problems, I don’t think there was ever point where Gagne was worth that. And by 2010, he certainly wasn’t.
I’m pretty sure after back to back 40 goal seasons he was worth at least more than a 19th and 3rd (for Umberger and 4th), which was where he was at after the 06/07 season (even if it wasn’t a higher pick, but more picks and or prospects). I think if we went back in time, and you didn’t have those injury problems, you could have had a lot more than 1 late 1st round pick for Gagne. But it’s all theoretical I guess anyway.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Yeah. But I’m standing by my point. They over-paid for Umberger because they wanted a center; he wasn’t worth what we got.
I just don’t think he’s analogous. Here’s a better analogy, really: right now, do you think Carter would be worth that 4th overall?
They over-paid for Umberger because they wanted a center; he wasn’t worth what we got.
I agree, but I also don’t think they ever thought he’d be their #1 center.
Also, I’m not limiting this conversation to Columbus for Gagne. My point here is, back in 2006, Gagne was worth more than just a late 1st round pick. It was basically in response to CCB saying that Gagne, back in the day being worth:
A late first round pick would have definitely fetched him
Is this the right room for an argument?
Basically my premise is, before the major injuries, after 2 back to back 40 goal seasons, Gagne was worth more than just a late first round pick to some team.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I do think Carter would be worth a 4th overall, just not in Columbus.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I don’t see it. I admit he has a hell of a wrist shot. Watching so far this year he hasn’t impressed. he seems to be one dimensional. His break away goal this year was sweet to give credit were do, but doesn’t seem to want to get dirty. He has wheels and the dental work he performed last week was outside the box. Just. not sold on him. Gagne is defensively responsible. Yes injury lowered his stock but you could count on his d. Carter is a big boy. Just question his heart. Yeah yeah two broken feet. I hear yah. Said nothing about being tough. Suckin up pain is different than heart.
Stick with me babe, moth balls the size of diamonds.

I’ve been playing men’s competitive soccer for a month now on either a broken foot or torn/severely strained tendon..everytime i move the ball with my foot it hurts but I love playing soccer so much I want to finish the season for my team..I feel like if i can play on my foot, why can’t he play on his?
I also think Carter has been much more responsible in the other end so far this season..in the playoffs I was routinely worried when I saw him in their own end, but this season he looks to actually be taking bodies and using his size so I’ve been pretty impressed in that department.
by KornontheKobb on Oct 25, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions
You are missing the point. The reason Carter would be worth a 4th overall is b/c if someone gives him an offer sheet, you are guaranteed to get a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounder at least if you don’t match the offer. So to make a trade for a pick, I’d want more than a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounder.
This has nothing to do how any of us view Carter as a player.
Is this the right room for an argument?
You don’t think anyone would have traded a top 5 pick for a 26 year-old multiple-40-goal scorer who had his last 40 goal season in the team with the worst record in the league?
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

As for the Gagne-to-Columbus article, I actually think name censored may have been referring to Jeff Carter.
If Columbus were to acquire Carter for the last year of his deal, they would have to pay his actual salary, yes?
Even though Carter’s cap hit is $5 million, his salary this year is $5.5 million, as referenced in the movie.
Tambellini mentions… he was talking about moving the 4th pick [to Philadelphia] if name censored was made available. Katz then responds " so he is going to give up the pick and take on 5 and a half million?"
Plus, they spoke of the deal like it would be a certainty; i.e., Scott Howson would automatically take on $5.5 million in exchange for a 4th-round pick. Gagne would have to approve such a deal; Carter would not.
I see Don beat me to this above, but whatever. That means we’re both right!

Possibly. Tonight is the first of a B2B so Bob might start tomorrow.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Bob has gotten 3, 4, 1, and 2 goals of support in 4 games; Boosh has gotten 1, 2, and 5 in support in 3 games. I think both goalies are falling victim to a lack of offensive consistency. It’s Boosh’s turn after Bob started the last 2 games (Pens and Ducks) before Boosh started the last one.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Notice how every report from Teemu about Jakub Kovar talks about him making at least 30+ saves a game? The kid clearly has no defense in front of him but manages to keep HC Mountfield in games and, from what I can tell, is their team’s MVP. Granted, he is playing against weak competition in the Czech Extraliga, but he had decent numbers when he was on the OHL during stints with the Oshawa Generals (12-3-0 with a 3.14 GAA and a .903 Save %) and the Windsor Spitfires (14-3-0 with one shutout, a 3.42 GAA and a .893 Save %) and seems to be excelling in the Czech Republic.
So, right now, Kovar is 22 years old. I’d say next season, Kovar come back over and start to play with the Phantoms so we can start to see what the kids got and give him time playing in North America against AHL talent.
Between Bobrovsky, Joacim Eriksson and Kovar, I am very excited about the Flyers’ group of young, talented goalies.

I wouldn’t get too excited about Kovar. He’s having a fine season, definitely. (2.05 gaa, 0.938 save percentage through 12 games). But this is his third year over there, and he’s had back-to-back 0.915 save percentages. He’s going to regress, especially with the apparently atrocious defense in front of him.
Then, when you consider all the goalies in the system for next year (Bobrovsky, Leighton, and Backlund all signed; Stewart and Riopel professional free agents; and Eriksson, Morrison, and Kovar looking for contracts) you are going to lose a lot of those guys. I think Morrison has to turn pro or become a free agent. I expect Eriksson to come over for rookie camp, then go back and play in the SEL another year. Kovar – I wish John Paddock knew him – might cease to be Flyers property after this year as well.
So… the Flyers will already have a Phantoms starter for next year barring a trade. They will have two young goalies coming off their rookie years to evaluate and sign. Then three more guys looking to play. You essentially have very little room. But yes, Kovar is having a phenomenal start to the season.

Hmmm good point. Didn’t think of a lot of that. Seems like a shame that such young, untapped talent be disregarded so easily. Do you really think John Paddock doesn’t know anything about Kovar? Man, if so, that is pathetic.
Undoubtedly, Kovar will not keep on the pace that he is on now but I wonder if he has more potential than either Stewart, Morrison or Riopel.
So, if the Flyers ditch Leighton, go with Bob and Backy in net. Eriksson goes back to the SEL. That leaves Stewart, Riopel, Morrison and Kovar to fight for the two spots on the Phantoms. Maybe, Kovar would beat out at least two of them. Granted, I don’t really know much about Stewart, Riopel, Morrison or Kovar because I have never seen any of them play so I really have no clue what I am talking about haha.

“I’m not sure of his age or whatever, but at some point you have to make a decision. I don’t know whether it’s next year or two years from now, I’m just coming to the organization, this will be my third year, and second as a manager, I’m not sure what year he was drafted…”
From my interview with him here.
haha, but don’t worry too much about not knowing Stewart, Riopel, Morrison, or Kovar. I like to think I’ve seen more of those four combined than about 97% of Philadelphia, and I haven’t seen two of them, and don’t know much about the other two.
A year is a long time. If Kovar has another year before he has to sign, I say keep him in Europe. See if he’ll go to the SEL or KHL, but delay the move. Also, I see no reason why Stewart, Riopel, or Morrison deserve spots in the organization next year. There’s a reason only one of them has an NHL deal right now.
Basically, you have every reason to be impressed with Kovar. He’s young, he’s succeeding, he’s finally healthy, and he’s finally a #1 on his team. Let’s see what he does this year. If he can impress too, then we can start getting giddy and using phrases like “aw shucks”, “by golly”, and “glut of goaltending talent”.

Columbus Blue Jackets activate Jared Boll after 6-game absence
Good timing, huh? Just in time to face the Flyers. This was a tidbit from The Cannon:
…the team will see the return of Jared Boll to the lineup, just in time to see his old mentor and occasional dance card partner, Jody Shelley.
When Boll was asked at the morning skate if he was healthy enough to fight tonight, he replied “I’m cleared to play. That’s what it means.” Boll has never recorded a fight against the Flyers in the regular season. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we see Boll change that with Shelley or Dan Carcillo tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how the team responds if he does.
Formerly known as "flyrsfrk05"
@Mitchman88 on Twitter
He has fought both Carcillo(2x) and Shelley(1X) to basically draws. But he is more Carcillo’s size but a pretty accomplished fighter and will go with bigger guys. Should be interesting because to activate a fighter against a team that has one definite fighter and one very willing fighter he has to be healthy enough and is most likely expecting to go. And when a guy who fights comes back off an injury he will more likely ask Shelley if they are on the ice together if he will give him a toss. I am sure shelley will oblige. Carcllo’s fights seem to be more organic then code.

Carcillo has the heart and the desire to be good but he needs a counselor. He has no control of his emotions and needs to improve his basic skills. Trust me what separates Carcillo from Avery/Cooke/Ruttuu(the better pests) is game smarts, the legitimate skills; such as skating and stick handling and temper control.
Just Call Me "M"!
He has fought both Carcillo(2x) and Shelley(1X) to basically draws.
Doesn’t this mean Carcillo is a heavyweight?!?!
Carcillo is a willing fighter but at 6-0/205 and guys like Shelley & Orr at 6-4/240 he is not a heavyweight. And he is trying to carve out a niche as a pest/energy checker. A heavyweight fighter is what Shelley is, salary and necessity conversations aside. Carcillo would be a much more valuable player if he could improve his skills while being annoying and actually fighting when only really necessary.
Just Call Me "M"!

I wanted to answer. As ridiculous as people feel fighting is in the NHL I have been long intrigued by the fighter and the code. I spent a lot of my childhood around the Flyers and the fighters always peaked my interest. There is a lot more to it then just bare knuckle aggression. Especially in the 70’s and early 80’s when a lot of this code stuff seemed to become unwritten.
Just Call Me "M"!
We agree on the necessity of a fighter, and we share an intrigue in the code. I just don’t like the price they paid for one, and I define fighter pretty broadly as “someone who will fight.”
Before we start this, I should just clarify that I don’t care enough to retread this ground. Feel free to have a conversation with a dinner room table.
But: yes.
Interesting! But I don’t want to take you away from all the important stuff you have to do. :-)
Just Call Me "M"!
Ha, I meant that I’m not invested in this argument. I clearly don’t have better things to do.
But, if you want the theory: as long as you have a player on the ice you will hold someone accountable for what they do, that’s what you need. No one going to pull up on a dangerous hit because they are thinking about Colton Orr, so I can’t believe it’s enough of a deterrent. Similarly, as long as the Lappys and Carcillos of the world will stand in for abuse every time Danny chops someone across the face, we have everything we need.
Scott Hartnell is a heavy weight. So is Rupp.
Just wanted to laugh again. Sorry.
