Game 8, Discussion Thread: Philadelphia Flyers at Columbus Blue Jackets
Philadelphia Flyers at Columbus Blue Jackets, Oct 25, 2010 7:00 PM EDT
Tonight's goaltenders:
After the jump, a look at tonight's lineups, questions to answer and our in-game discussion.
Projected Flyers Line Combinations
Leino - Briere - Hartnell
Powe - Richards - Giroux
JVR - Carter - Zherdev
Shelley - Betts - Carcillo
Pronger - Carle
Coburn - Timonen
Meszaros - O'Donnell
Projected Columbus Line Combinations (thanks, The Cannon)
Questions to Answer
- Nikolay Zherdev returns to the place his NHL began. Does it provide the spark he needs to get going offensively?
- Brian Boucher is playing in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Is that the right move?
- Mike Richards was a force on Saturday against Toronto. Can he keep it up?
- What about the top line? (Yes, the top line is Leino-Briere-Hartnell until further notice.) Do they keep it up?
- The Cannon calls one of the Jackets' keys of the game "Shooting." Basically, when they get pucks on net, they've had success this season. Seems basic enough... can the Flyers block shots effectively, as they did against Toronto?
- Jody Shelley returns to his old stomping grounds. Jared Boll is back in the lineup for CBJ (how convenient). That's a fight waiting to happen, right?
- Backup goalie in for CBJ tonight. Nightmares for the Flyers?
Seven might be a record for most pre-game questions. Will have to check the records. Tonight's game is on CSN and WIP at 7 PM. Go Flyers.

Actually, I made slavery be a monster which is the Souths pet and they were mad cause North hated it. So they got in a “very bad fight” Children believe anything. I baby sat a kid and called it toaster and it kept responding (so does my dog, just say the word with the same connotation and syllables as their name).

As stated by Travis in the previous post, it is now Quasi-Hockey season (Real Hockey season does not begin until after the Eagles are eliminated IMO, but since Football is only on the weekends it is more Hockey season today than it was last week). That means that Flyers mistakes will warrant yelling at the TV, as they are no longer excused by the “its only October, and who the hell cares anyway the Phillies are playing” logic. Im keeping my eyes on Zherdev tonight, he has shown very little so far
Was hopin the word on Z was only wrong place wrong time and was optimistic with his preseason. Not to impressive. Few flashes to wow did you see that but all in all pretty week

2011-12= No football or Basketball.
Well next year might be the ultimate hockey season.
Unfortunately that will also mean the winter classic will be the Penguins vs. the Capitals again.
However it will motivate ESPN to make a big bid for TV rites and games will be on every night!

I’m pretty sure SI wrote an article on him and that incident. It was a really great article, saying how he never recovered from that. But it wasn’t in a bad way, kind of a he had so much remorse and empathy, that he couldn’t get over blaming himself to play.

I get NHL center ice automatically re-subscribed every year , and every year when the free preview ends we have to call and tell them that we’re not getting it. Then have to tell Comcast that we have paid and WHERE THE HELL IS IT????
Currently on the phone with the idiots, on hold, staring at a blank screen that says “Philadelphia at Columbus. To subscribe call….”
“Hold time 10 min. We are currently experiencing higher than normal call volume. Your call will be answered by next available Comcast service representative”

Well I’m going to be honest and say that there is a consistent 45 goal scorer somewhere within Jeff Carter. It’s just stuck beneath a lack of motivation and effort (or at least that’s what it appears like; the alternative is that there never was a 45 goal scorer and he just got lucky).

Have your starter go down to injury, use a waiver wire pickup to play well above his head, get an unknown for nothing (hint: He’ll become a stud in the playoffs), lose in the 81st game forcing a win or go home, and then pull it out in the shootout.
Oh, don’t forget “Get incredibly effin’ lucky in the playoffs (in addition to all that above) and only face teams that ALSO got incredibly effin’ lucky, and out luck ’em.”

17. Columbus Blue Jackets
Blue Jackets was the winning entry in a name-the-team contest. According to the team’s website, the name "celebrates patriotism, pride and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio and, more specifically, the city of Columbus." Ohio contributed more residents to the Union Army than any other state during the Civil War.

That was a terrible shift by Carter there. He coasted on the forecheck, skated to the top of the circle, loses the puck in a 1-on-3, fires it into the boards to nobody, then fails to keep the puck in the zone.

I wouldn’t be so quick to knock Columbus. They have some really talented guys on the roster, but just had the wrong type of coach (Hitchcock). If Scott Arniel has them playing as tough as they played tonight, they could make some noise out West. I don’t know if they’ll make the playoffs, but I don’t think they’ll be bottom-feeders.

It pisses me off because he could be one of the top players in the league if he wanted to be.

Clarke:MacLeish::Richards/Pronger:Carter
Rick MacLeish was the Jeff Cater of his day. Insanely talented, made everything look easy, and sometimes coasted along. Clarkie always got in his face at the right time, and it paid off.

Carter is the Flyers Ryan Howard. The team plays like crap, but he takes all the blame. Never Richards whos playing just as bad. Never Pronger whos playing just as bad. never Giroux whos playing just as bad. Im not saying hes playing well, but lets be fair and agree that he isnt the reason we are playing like shit.

I dont think he stands out more. besides 3 breakaway goals Giroux has been absolutely abysmal so far. Richards has been horrid. Hell, you could make a case that Meszaros has been our best defenseman. Like I said Carter has been pretty crappy too, but i dont see him being any worse then that 1 line that actually shows up.

Its kinda late for Giroux to still be showing “raw potential”. hes at the point of his career where he should be producing consistently every game. And yeah Richards came off oh his only good game of the season, and wasnt noticed once tonight.
And lets say Richards is the main reason we beat Toronto, can’t we say that Carter was the main reason we beat the Av’s?
Again, I must state, Im all fine with saying carter is playing like shit, But I just think its pure assinine, and just plane dumb fan-ism, to say that Carter is the reason we suck.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
I think no one put the blame solely on him. They just stated that he was the one who pissed them the most.

American Cheese, B!tch! ... #1 mission? Kill Holmgren.
So Carter’s not the reason the Flyers sucked tonight.—they suck as a team right now. And if our guy Giroux should be “producing every game” in his young career, what should Carter be doing? Neither of them scored? Shouldn’t Carter be leading the team by scoring, since that’s what he’s paid to do? His hands looked like stone tonight, and I don’t think it’s the first time this year
G, the second coming of Foppa.
by JerseyDriver on Oct 25, 2010 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
There is no reason why Carter isnt leading the team in scoring. And i put him at blame just as much as I do with every other top 6/9 forwards and all of our defenseman. But i dont think hes playing particularly worse then anybody else to warrant why he should be traded.
Let me rephrase my comment. If your willing to trade Carter for his play so far this season, you might as well say you want to trade Richards or Pronger or Giroux or JVR because they’ve played just as shitty as Carter. Like I said in my first comment, Like how everyone calls for Howards head even though Utley and Werth and Rollins were just as bad.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Notice how none of us are calling for Howard’ head on here. You’re right, it was the whole Phillies team who faltered. And you’re right, it’s the whole Flyers team who is faltering. The reason everyone picks on Carter is that he has a ton of talent but questionable desire at times.
Richards has bad games, but it’s ususally because he’s trying to do too much or is not effectively communicating with his linemates. Giroux always works his ass off but isn’t always rewarded. Pronger is still getting into game shape. JVR is in his second NHL season and is trying to learn his third system. That’s why people go easier on other players. When Carter skates around with his head up his ass, he’s no better than Joffrey Lupul.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
hes at the point of his career where he should be producing consistently every game
Entering his second full year as an NHL player you’re expecting him to produce EVERY game? That’s ridiculous. In addition, it doesn’t matter if you’re a 10 year vet, you can still show potential.
I didn’t see either the Avs or Toronto game so i can’t really comment on either.
Blaming any one player for our play right now is as assinine as saying we suck and won’t make the playoffs after only EIGHT GAMES.
Flyers Fans: We've survived Lock-outs, Lindros and Cooperalls. If you want to get rid of us, you'll have to split an atom or two.

No one is saying “Carter is the reason we suck.” Everyone is saying “Carter is not playing to his potential.”
You rag on Richards constantly. You realize that Carter wears an “A”, right? If Richards isn’t leading accurately, shouldn’t Carter pick up the slack? Yes. Well, why doesn’t he?
You can complain all you want about Richards. He is at least trying. I didn’t see anything in his game tonight which made me think his head wasn’t in it ore that he wasn’t trying. Carter skated in a fog all night.
Oh, and Giroux is what, 22 years old? Yeah, he should be the leading scorer in the league by now. Jesus Christ.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I think Carter and Richards need to get their heads straight. I never said carter was playing well. What I said was he wasnt playing worse then anybody else.
And I never said Giroux should be leading the team in scoring. Im saying he should be developed enough where he should be playing at least decent consistently. Like I said, besides 3 breakaway goals, I haven’t seen anything spectacular from him yet.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Fair enough. I think that Richards’ head is on straighter than Carter’s right now, but that’s just one man’s opinion. Carter isn’t moving his feet enough to create space.
As for Giroux, he is playing decent consistently. If he were bigger he’d be able to bump more people off the puck. For a man of his size, he is tremendously strong and works very hard. He just isn’t being rewarded right now.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
You know what would make him a better player? A winger like Aaron Asham…WAITAMINUTE!!

He looks very nice with the puck, but he always tries to do that one extra move, or gets a little too fancy with his passes. He plays like he guns for ESPN top 10 every time he touches the puck. he did it today, but he needs to lear to just put the puck on the net and try and force a dirty goal more then trying to break the goalies ankles.

One skill I would (seriously) like to see the goalie coaches work on is “What do I do with the puck now that I’ve stopped it”. It gets bad some nights, should reverse, goes forward. Should chip to a player, tried to hammer it around the boards. Just bad decisions all the time.
