Oh Sheldon Souray, you silly SOB. I feel for the guy at this point.
Also, Meszaros grading is on the recap, get to work you 3.
Is this the right room for an argument?
can we stop the mez rating yet? Seriousy, it’s just leads to bad blood and people are gonna start rating everybody. We should just keep our ratngs to ourselevs and rate them during the offseason when we give everybody grades.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
Absolutely right. As fans and paying customers of this team we shouldn’t be calling attention to a player whose play has yet to even come close to justifying his gargantuan price tag.

Price tag – Not Meszaros’ fault.
The acquisition of said price tag – All Homer’s fault!
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Price tag – Not Meszaros’ fault.
That’s one reason why we are grading, we aren’t taking in to consideration his cap hit when we watch the game. We are just going oh, he played well he got x/5.
I had no idea it was causing such issues on this site.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Oh, I know. And I have no issues with your grading him.
I was replying to Mandrake:
[Meszaros’] play has yet to even come close to justifying his gargantuan price tag.
I hate mutli-million dollar sports contracts. I really do. But I refuse to attempt to “justify” what someone makes based on the job they do. There’s no way to do so objectively.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Haha fair enough, I was just trying to point out why were are doing this.
So many people complain to us about analyzing value too much, or bringing up too many advanced stats, so we did this. And now that we are doing this, those same people are complaining about us doing this. I can understand if they worry about it clogging the threads though, and have no problem moving it to email.
Is this the right room for an argument?
So comparing his salary to other players in his league, playing his position, in his age range and with similar production levels isn’t being objective?

Meszaros has been the 2nd or 3rd best D-Man on the team so far this season. He has played better than both Carle and Pronger. And the 3rd pairing has been the most consistent. He is also playing close to 19 minutes per game.
If you want to put him behind Kimmo and Coburn that is fine. Even though Kimmo is a -3 and Meszaros is a +1 and Kimmo hasn’t registered a point yet.
Coburn is also a -3.
He hasn’t been a turnover machine and a complete liability like everyone predicted when we have acquired him.
Based on points he’s the 4th best defenseman on the team. Based on +/- he’s the 4th best defenseman on the team. Based on time on ice he’s the 5th best defenseman on the team. Where are you getting that he’s been the 2nd best from?
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room."

From what I have watched and comments and stories around here. Pronger and Carle have been prone to major gaffes that led to goals. Meszaros that is not the case. He has been very consistent and noticeable on the ice with the physical play.
I agree with this. Carle has been better in certain games – much better – but he’s also been worse in other games – much worse.
Where you want to rank Meszaros is really up to you, but he’s been steadily solid.

I’m sorry, I thought we covered this before – in what way are you qualified as a hockey expert to the point where you can anoint Meszaros as the 2nd best defensemen on the team?
If that’s your opinion, fine, but quit stating it as fact.
Everything is opinion when it comes to sports. You can only use stats to support your opinion but it is still. Even if everyone agrees Pronger is the best D-Man on the team it is still just a consensus of opinion. Everything I say is just my humble opinion.
Since when is Kimmo paid specifically to put up points? And hanging a guy like Kimmo out to dry on plus/minus is awfully harsh, when he’s facing better competition at 5 on 5 with worse teammates… besides, I can’t help but think of a story from Jonesey’s book about when he was in the AHL and he had a night where he was -7, but the next day the coach showed video showing he had his man covered on every one of the goals.

It is and it isn’t. It’s hard for me to say exactly what a person in a given profession with a specific skill set should be making. Say you have two teachers in a school. Both make the same salary, but Teacher A is better than Teacher B. Can you justify who makes what? If Teacher A is better than Teacher B, shouldn’t Teacher A make more? What if Teacher A and Teacher B are making too much to begin with? What if they’re not making enough?
Player X could be making half a million less than Meszaros and producing at slightly lower levels, and we could do one of the following:
- We could decide that Player X is a better deal because he makes less money.
- We could decide that both players make too much, given their production.
- We could decide that Meszaros is the better player but he should be making no more than Player X.
- We could decide something else entirely.
All of these “decisions” are moot because Meszaros is on the team making $4 million a year, and that’s not going to change regardless of what we say.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Which is why Meszaros is overpaid :)

He is certainly not the worst 4 million dollar D-Man in the league. He is probably somewhere in the middle.
And we aren’t trying to claim that.
I apologize if I come off like I am trashing him here. I am just trying a fun experiment for the season, it’s all based on my opinion, and I’m doing my best to be as fair as possible with how I grade him (meaning not one dman has earned a 5/5 this year from me in any game b/c I’m a tough grader in general, and a 3/5 should be looked at as above average, not a bad grade).
And the player I have chosen to defend a lot on here, Coburn, came from having to listen to everyone at games bitch about him based on one mistake he made at the beginning of the season. So I took it as a fun challenge to try to defend Coburn’s season last year with advanced stats and his dman pairings. But for some reason, people take that as me saying Coburn can do no wrong, and Meszaros can do no good. I apologize if that is the way it seems, b/c that’s not they way I intend. I will be far more critical of Coburn now that he makes so much more now (frankly he has been a great value before). But everyone is jumping at this type of thing like I am saying this guy is infaliable, and that guy should be shot b/c he is a waste of life, and that’s simply not the case.
Hopefully this clears the air a little.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Actually I have no problem with the rating thing. Except that it is done in a vacuum without grading the other D-Men it is really hard to put it into perspective.
Valid criticism.

Completely understandable. Here are two points I’d like to make just to give you a better picture as to what goes through my head with this stuff:
1) I do make every attempt to not compare Meszaro’s play to any other dman on the team or opposing team (which had been initially tossed around as an idea). Meszaro’s should perform like Meszaros and no one else, so the vacuum in this case I view as a positive since I don’t say he had a really good game, but Pronger was even better so I’m docking him 1 point for that.
2) I do grade everyone individually in my head (dmen), but I pay far more attention to Meszaros in order to try to be as accurate as possible for this exercise. Pronger has gotten a 1/5 from me this year, Timonen has had a 2/5 from me. I view an average game as a 2.5/5 and try to go from there if that helps you understand what I am doing any better.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Those were individual games, not an overall average for Pronger and Timonen. I wanted to make sure I clarified that.

You may be ignoring his price tag while grading him on a game-by-game basis, but the whole reason he’s being graded over any other player is because of his price tag.

Most definitely. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with him. My major complaints have been his abilities as an offensive defenseman so far (I just want more since that’s what is expected of him), and how he has at times looked lost positionally on the PK.
But I am very comfortable when he and O’Donnell are on the ice, which is meant as a compliment to both players.

I just cheated and looked at his stats – well, not cheated. I’m compiling Corsi and Zone Start, and just got his yearly totals. I can tell you what the stats say, but I think we’re supposed to ignore that.

John..
The point of this is to keep a log, Geoff is tracking the numbers. We are trying to see if our game by game impressions of him match up to what we get out of the advanced stats at the end of the year. Do you really think me giving Meszaros a number out of 5 is any worse than someone saying Carter had a bad game offensively despite having those 3 points? Everyone voices their opinions on the game and players performances in the recap, I don’t see how applying a number to a specific player on this site so Geoff can keep track is any worse (or better) than someone saying Carle had a terrible (or great) game last night and someone elkse disagreeing with that opinion. I can see how you don’t want a ton of grading out there, so maybe we’ll move it to email, but bad blood, really?

You are on a pretty high horse for tossing around the F word (not the 4 letter one) at Richards the other day. I wanted to scream at you for using that word for personal reasons, but I didn’t, b/c I realize you are young, passionate about hockey, and voicing your opinion at the moment.
We are doing this to give us more information about Meszaros at the end of the season than we would have with just the stats. He may have played better than his advanced stats showed us, and this might benefit Meszaros at the end of the year in our eyes. So it’s just as likely to reflect positively in our end of the year grading of Meszaros as it is to negatively impact his grading. At the end of the day, all we are doing is voicing our opinions, no different than you, and we aren’t using any offensive words in the process.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I’m all for MORE people subjectively grading Meszaros too. It would be interesting to see the spread on any given night, and an overall total difference in my opinion.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I thought meszaros played a good game he wasn’t spectacular but you don’t need that from a defender he made a few good plays and took some good shots on the powerplay I think he played better than Pronger and Timonen today so I would say that he was probably the best or second best defender out there on ice the turnovers happen to all the defenders and today it happened to Timonen and Pronger too and just because it cost us a goal doesn’t really make a difference also he had a point. 5.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

trends
Score 3 and win
4-0-0 all of the Flyers wins this season.
versus the backup goalie
0-4-0
versus the number 1 goalie
4-0-1
record when scoring on the PP
3-1-0
shorthanded 4 or fewer times
3-2-0
(this has been the case the last 4 games)
Hmm…yes, all of our wins have 3 or more goals, and our losses have 2 or less. Clearly this concept of scoring goals is important somehow. They should award points for when this happens, to promote it.
Seriously though, what the hell is it with us and backup goalies? They’re our Kryptonite!

Has Gagne looked as bad as his stat line. 6GP 0G 0A -8 and he is getting over 4 minutes of PP time. Tampa is playing well 5-2-1 so its not that the team sucks. I am just curious as a Gagne fan.
In the Tampa game earlier, Gagne kinda looked motionless out there. He was getting into low percentage spots and not moving from them, and he passes the puck almost instantly when he got it. Maybe its the system or a learning curve, but he didn’t look that great out there that night.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
I was at that game, and the telling thing for me is that he went unnoticed after his big ovation. I’m guessing the neck stiffness that has him DTD or on IR now may have something to do with that. Or he’s getting older …
I love the Flyers so much I even went to Bobby Clarke Day Camp.

He is. He was apparently sick, and now he’s on IR. So says my fantasy team.

He’s got a stiff neck, which is a crappy injury if you consider that he had to move away from the doctor who has given him neck treatments in the past… I hate to think that he could possibly get that cleared up more easily if he was back in this area. But I’m just speculating, of course.

He keeps hurting his neck whenever Katie walks by. Or is that the other way around? Hmm.

Barry Ashbee was very, very good
It is probably the most underplayed aspect of the 1970s Flyers. Parent (rightly) got acclaim. But the fact is, Ashbee, along with Watson and Van Impe, got rid of the “routine shots” in front of the net, so that Bernie could focus on the more difficult ones. Of course, this made Bernie appear truly phenomenal (since only tough shots were being faced), but without the D-men there would have been a barrage of shots, and more would have gotten in.
I’m sad that the tribute video had more talking heads than highlights. But that is the point. Ashbee was not spectacular, just effective. Ashbee also played in a slower era, and there were more spectacular D-men (not just Orr, but Brad Park and others come to mind). He did the little things (the one highlight, clearing the guy from the front of the net, was apt). He rarely made errors (Carle and Coburn, are you listening?)
The one comment I liked was Clement’s: Barry was the ultimate Flyer.
33 years since his death? Wow.

Nice Post Bud!
From an older dude around here that was young in the 70’s, I totally agree with everything you said. Parent was spectacular when he had to be which is what separated him from the average goaltenders. But like how the Flyers and Leighton were successful this spring, Bernie new exactly what the defense in front of him was going to expect him to save. Ashbee however was more of a veteran presence and mentor in the locker room during the transition of a team from average to great. He really was not around for the Cups but was instrumental in the development of the guys that became a very underrated, shut down, defense corps. He was a rock on defense when he played and a leader in the locker room. That banner ceremony was really about the Bullies generation of players and management. He truly was an inspiration to everyone in the organization in those days. He also helped me learn how to ice skate when I was a kid.
