Giroux, Flyers Pound Penguins for Bloody 3-2 Win
The puck had barely hit the ice by the time Mike Richards' helmet came off. His gloves, and the gloves and helmet of Matt Cooke soon followed. After Richards' comments on Cooke blew up on YouTube, this one wasn't a surprise. But the ferocity and length of their fight was fairly unexpected, and decidedly awesome. I think Richards won it, but I'm biased. He did land some pretty awesome punches after Cooke was already down, which can be excused given the circumstances.
Sadly, the Richards-Cooke throwdown was not accompanied with a Carcillo-Crosby tussle, as Richards had predicted. Aside from being a parallel match-up, Carcillo and Crosby really should fight at some point in the playoffs when both of their mustaches are at equal weakness.
Then in what has to be the highlight of a lifetime for anyone named "Deryk" with a "y," Deryk Engelland beat the everliving crap out of Jody Shelley. There was blood on Shelley's helmet from being struck so many times by the fist of Engelland, which itself was also covered in Shelley's blood. Also covered in Shelley's blood? The ice, which was actually fairly gross in HD.
Because the whistles hadn't been used enough by that point, the referees decided to call five minor penalties (none matching) in the next 66 seconds, resulting in some rare 3-on-3 action. The officials largely seemed to have it out of their systems by then, and the rest of the game was fairly well officiated.
Oh yeah, there was some scoring in this one, too. The always awe-inspiring Claude Giroux, whose awesomeness seems to be growing eXponentially (I know you see what I did there). Giroux notched an absurd third short-handed goal of the season, meaning that he's on pace for around 24 for the season, a number that would be more than any team had ever gotten in a season. He also added an eventually game-winning power play goal in the third, one of a garbagey variety far different from the works of art he has become known for. The Flyers other goal came from finesse specialist Daniel Carcillo.
The Flyers were outshot 28-24, but Sergei Bobrovsky was sufficiently stellar in the win. He's quickly establishing himself as yet another reason it sucks to be from Pittsburgh. Bob's grasp on the starting gig seems to be more and more cemented.
After the jump, questions answered, and a comment of the night.
Questions Answered:
- How long does Nikolay Zherdev stay on the fourth line? Answering this question is sort of like trying to divide by zero. Zherdev was a healthy scratch tonight. Lots o' questions surround Zherdev these days.
- Does Sergei Bobrovsky match his opening night performance in Pittsburgh? Little known fact: Bobrovsky is actually Russian for "flightless bird smasher."
- How much do we hate Arron Asham at the end of the night? Since it's me (Ben) writing this recap, I can say that my love for Asham is as strong as ever, and I still have mad respect for the guy.
- Marc-Andre Fleury hasn't started a home game since October 10th or something like that. Can the Flyers keep him unbalanced and shaky in the CONSOL net? Fleury didn't have the early shakes that have done him in before, but he still was a sideshow next to Bob.
- Is tonight's game generally more entertaining than the Sixers game, thus making the decision to throw the Flyers on TCN while the Sixers get the CSN top-billing seem silly? I know nothing about the Sixers game, but I'm sure the answer to this one is "yes."
Comment of the night:
Fun Fact:
Number of home wins by the Pens this year….2
Number of Flyers win in Pen’s arena: 2

Also. Shelley Got his ass kicked after a great fight by Richards, and took two terrible penalties. Seriously, why is in in full time, yet someone like Carcillo plays every 3rd game.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
That ass beating was rather suprising. He’s been solid so far but what I can’t understand was that " I am going to throw a right." BBBBAAAAAMMMM. “Ok that sucked.” “I am going to try that again cause I think I can do better”. BAAAAAAAMMMMMMM. " ok that hurt". “If I throw that same punch again, maybe it will be a different result”. BBBBBAAAAAMMMM BBBBAAAAAMMMM BBBBBAAAAAMMMM. “Damn that hurt.”
Now after what looked like a very stupid outlook towards the fight, why the fuck, after gettin rocked HARD, three, four, five times and feeling the red juice run down your face, wouldn’t you try something different???? As painful as it was for him to be on the receiving end of that, but to actually watch him throw a punch and know he was going to get tagged was even harder. Just for the fact that you could see it coming. Every fight he has had so far, that left throwing jabs, which I might say looks real fucking annoying when you trying to line a guy up, seemed to be his thing, but not a one. What hurts the most is the money he gets to get his ass handed to him by a FUCKIN PENGUIN? Damn it man, anyone but them you dumb ass.

If all Shelley does if play 4 minuets of hockey, lose fights, and take two awful penalties, I’d rather have Klotz for league minimum(and a farm player) in that role.

So Nodl and Carcillo both had strong games. Do the Flyers scratch one for Zherdev or does the Russian Enigma stay scratched due to the “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” mentality?

Something about this Zherdev thing is telling me it will not end well. I would love to be proven wrong because while Zherdev cannot play defense some of the skills he shows on offense are wonderful to behold.

What could possibly not end well about scratching a notoriously moody player after his best game of the year? I mean, it’s not like he’s already having trouble assimilating into the team due to cultural and language barriers.

Zherdev was scratched because they needed another ass kicker in the line up and if he was gonna play on the 4th line it would be pointless. I don’t think they needed an offensive gun tonight, they planned to go out and fight the Pens and he doesn’t fit that plan.
i’m really hoping the Z scratch was a matchup decision that has been taking for a ride by the media.

Whatever works, do that — in this case, scratch Zherdev, play Carcillo, Nodl and Shelley. Hopefully some team in the NHL wants Zherdev and would be willing to give up a roster player who makes <$2M for him.

Sixers spent the majority of the game trailing anywhere from 8-15 points before coming back at the end and nearly tying it with a 3 at the buzzer. The 3 by Nocione was blocked and the Hawks won the game. In short, the Flyers game was the better game to put on Comcast. Now tomorrow (although technically later tonight), the Flyers are on CSN while the Sixers are on TCN
I didn't perform well when it mattered most.

Why do I keep waiting for the Bob ceiling to cave in? Is this what we’ve been waiting for? While he hasn’t been perfect, its still like were dreaming that a very high functioning goaltender is between the pipes. And he’s only 22..
Because it is eventually going to happen to a 22 year old? It just is, he’ll have a very rough patch of about 5-7 games and he’ll need to be able to rebound from it.

Zherdev just came off his best game of the season in which he scored a goal on a pretty move and was constantly around the puck and involved in the play. Why scratch the guy?
And if we dont officially have a #1 goalie now, I don’t know when we will.
From what I understand, he got mouthy with the management and they wanted to send a message. I’m not sure if this is true, but it would fit his past.
People mentioned at the beginning of the season that Z on the lineup helped out Bobs in regards to acclimating to the US and learning English. Now I’m hoping the reverse, that Bobs work ethic rubs off on Z.
Man, when Shelley was taking that beatdown I was having flashbacks to Gary Roberts destroying Ben Eager!! Not long after that Eager got shipped out of town so maybe we have something to look forward to.

by zachtbhood on Oct 30, 2010 3:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Richards is the man. That is the exact fight Richards needs to have as the leader and Captain of this team. Everyone is being a little ridiculous about Shelley getting beat. You can’t win them all and he has won and lost tons of fights. Englland didn’t want the rematch so as for his prowess, well it is still intact. For the record this is why Shelley is on the team because Pittsburgh sent someone out to fight as a back up to the Cooke fight and if Shelley wasn’t on this team that would have been Carcillo or Hartnell getting beat up ten times as bad.
Just Call Me "M"!
I beg to differ, sir.

That is a LIE. Blatant lies. Carcillo kicked ass out there, layed a few punches which he didn’t get called for. And scored. An they had multiple camera shots on his face, which is just a bonus for me.
Let's do it again
by Cillo stache on Oct 30, 2010 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions
last i checked on hockey fights
Carcillo had a career win % of 63%, Cote was 27%(barf), and Shelley was 48%. So Carcillo wins more fights and scores more goals then the “heavyweights” that we’ve had.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
And Carcillo would not have fought Engelland, as that fight was entirely started by Jody Shelley failing to goad Brooks Orpik into a penalty and then getting his ass beat. The Pens enforcer is a decent D-man, they aren’t going to sacrifice him for the sake of it. We won, but I wished we could have seen Zherdev after what I thought was a break out game.

Did you just say decent d-man? Englland is a journeyman AHL defenseman that has a career more known for fighting. He has been in the pens line up 8 games and has had 5 fights. He is a heavyweight fighter. Let’s not sugar coat it.

Engelland has been pretty good so far this year for them, he is their 6th defenseman who fights a lot but he plays a decent amount unlike Shelley.
Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"
by Ed Van Chimp on Oct 30, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
He is a defenseman. 1 out of 6 not 1 out of 12. He is not even as talented as O’Donnell. But my original point was that this is who you want your heavyweight to fight against. Having Shelley in the line up last night was an asset to the team. Richards took Cooke and his stupid hi-jinx right out of the game last night. He was a little school girl. Even in the new NHL fighting is an effective game strategy.
Just Call Me "M"!
Wait… You want Shelley to take out Engelland, because Engelland is more valuable to the Penguins than Shelley is to the Flyers. Ok, I can get behind that.
But Richards fighting Cooke was also effective, despite the fact that Richards is more valuable to the Flyers than Cooke is to the Penguins?
Don’t you want to merge that and say you want Shelley fighting Cooke?

Actually
Cooke is probably just as valuable to the penguins, albeit without any of the leadership. The guy has 3 shorthanded goals for the penguins this year.
Cooke, like Carcillo, can actually play hockey when he isn’t being a dumbass.

Wait…You are missing the whole deal. No one is taking anyone out based on value to a team. That goon Engelland was fighting someone because believe it or not, like it or not that is what he does. Having Shellley on the team is who you want him to fight, not Carcillo or Hartnell. Whether he wins every fight or not having him in the line up last night was an asset to the roster. Richards value to the team in reference to Cooke’s value to the PEns is mutually exclusive to the message that was sent by a guy that is capable and needs to send the message. That Pens team got punked last night.
Just Call Me "M"!
So your saying that Shelly should be in the lineup because it makes sure more talented players like Hartnell and Carcillo arent fighting. But at the same time, putting Shelley in the lineup means that a more talented player (carcillo, Nodl, Zherdev) has to sit a whole game. Sorry, but Id rather Carcillo sit 5 minuets then miss a whole game.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
I see those points. I now understand your distinction, and I will revert to my favorite retort:
You don’t need Shelley to fight Engelland. You simply don’t. How is it an asset to a team for Shelley to fight 17 seconds after your Captain just “punked” the Penguins?
And when he gets his ass beat as badly as he does, you essentially just gave the Penguins the momentum they needed to overcome the effect Richards’ fight had. His four minutes of ice time, momentum shifting fight, and terrible penalty in the third should be enough to convince you that last night, he was not at all an asset.

I think something weird happened with the Shelley fight. It is pretty obvious that losing Richards (strictly hockey speak, not “message sending”) for five minutes hurts us more than Cooke out for five hurts them. That said I feel like Shelley was supposed to fight Orpik to “even” the score with Orpik, but Engeland got in there instead. I was shocked that they didn’t go again, but glad also. Not because I think that Shelley would lose, but because we were winning and we didn’t need to fire them up.
As for him getting his ass kicked, Engelland landed his first punch squarley in Shelley’s eye, that is where the blood came from, so the fight was essentially over after that. These legitimate heavyweights beat and lose to eachother all the time. Shelley is 2-1 for us, which I will take, and I’m sure he will take any day. As for Engelland, he’s been great this year. He KO’d Colton Orr. Don’t say Shelley sucks as a fighter, that is rediculus. They will meet again. But those first five minutes of fighting were amazing.

Shelley said that he wanted round 2 but the game didn’t allow for it. Proving that the guy is actually smarter than he looks (not too hard if you see above photo.)

I didn’t say he sucks as a fighter, because that’s not the point. He fought 17 seconds after Richards – the Captain – set the tone for the night by beating down one of the most hated Penguins. What is Shelley hoping to accomplish by fighting 17 seconds later?
Then I took issue with calling him an asset last night, because he wasn’t.

Fine. But the problem is that it isn’t Shelley’s job to take a penalty just because one was missed earlier.
Pointing out that the officiating was inconsistent (SHOCKER!) doesn’t justify someone taking a penalty. It was a penalty. And a stupid one at that.

So basically we are stuck with a fighter who plays about 4 minutes a game, manages to get a penalty or two a game as well as loses fights, all for the ripe price of 1.1 mil a season…for three years. Aside from the Randy Jones fiasco this is the second biggest reason Homer should have been canned already.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Monkey see monkey do
See my post on the Pat Maroon axing; Flyers management is starting to seem like “fiascos R us” to me. Homer is just following in Flyer management footsteps. It will be hard for upper management to see Homer mess-ups since the messups probably would be what they would have done.
The best move Homer has made in the last year was the Stevens firing/Lavvy hiring. And note, that was way out of the Snider “Flyer family” mindset.
Only missing the playoffs would stop the insanity. And I certainly don’t want the Flyers to do that. But will we have to depend on Olli Jokinen again?
Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz. Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt.
Homer does make dumb decisions and he also apparently is really annoying to deal with (see Hartnell’s quotes on Homer harping on him to cut his mop — this even after the franchise had a very successful fan night celebrating it), but overall, you’re talking about a cup contending team that just went to the cup finals. Not gonna happen.
Live in LA, so I had to watch the NHL Net feed of the Pittsburgh broadcast. I had to mute the entire 2nd half of the 1st period. Their announcers are so bad, and seem to have such a hard-on for the Flyers. All they do is talk about things that happened 1-3 years ago. Where are the highlights from when the Pens sucked? I cannot stand their announcers. That, and they cheat.
