Game 11, Discussion Thread: New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers
New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers, Oct 30, 2010 7:00 PM EDT
Tonight's goaltenders:
After the jump, questions to answer and our in-game discussion.
Questions to Answer
- It's the first time a Flyers goaltender has played in back-to-back nights this season. Does Bobrovsky look as good as he did last night?
- Danny Briere needs two assists to reach 300 in his career. Does he do it tonight?
- The Flyers have won 10 in a row against the Islanders in Philadelphia. Does that continue?
- Both teams played last night. Any sluggishness to start?
Tonight's game is on CSN Philly and 1210 WPHT. Go Flyers.

Bob makes his third straight start tonight in goal, CSNPhilly.com has learned. No surprise. He earned it last nite in PGH
What on earth has Boosh ever done to Lavi?
I didn't perform well when it mattered most.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Boosh but if the team plays for Bob, play Bob whenever you can.

Bob is 22-years old. While my concerns may be unfounded, I am worried about playing him too much. This will be the 1st time Bob has played on back-to-back nights.
I didn't perform well when it mattered most.
Yeah, it’s not the 3 starts in a row that bothers me, it’s the back-to-back days.

I agree but if Boosh starts Monday, Bob wouldn’t play again til Thursday. I don’t mind seeing if the kid has it in him against the Isles.

+1… I would have went with Boosh tonight.. I don’t see the reason for needing to start Bob against the Islanders (unless it is to get his first career shutout) when Boucher would have been adequate.
I don’t think we’re in a position to afford the luxury of underestimating the opponent.

True — but how many games has Bob ever started in one season? I don’t care how young he is, he can be worn out by being started over and over again.

Well I agree with you on that, I’d rather start Boosh. I just reacted to what edbro said about the shutout etc.

Agreed that the Flyers underestimate a lot of opponents — they play up to them when they’re good and play down to them when they’re perceived to be bad.

Don’t remember there being a giveaway at Halloween games. Usually just a costume contest. Maybe one year I think I got a mask…really cheap, kind of cool, but it smelled like plastic. Couldn’t wear it too long.

Do you lift weights for the same group of muscles, with the same load and intensity on back to back days? Because that’s very similar to the stresses a goalie can be exposed to. When a goalie goes into the butterfly position the amount of stress on the hips and legs is the equivalent to an Olympic weightlifter doing an clean and jerk. Not to mention the strain to the adrenal system that an athletic activitry like goal tending has. Sports that place a premium on speed will require more epinephrine to fire fast twitch muscle fibers that the body needs to perform explosive movements.

They don’t have to. They can say it was for salary cap reasons – which it would be. Or they could say he gave the best return – which he probably would.
If they can’t spin that, they need a new PR department. If they can’t see that’s the right move to make…

Watching this game with a feed of the Ladies’ Free Skate from the Skate Canada competition in the background on my computer.
The music from the skaters’ programs is fitting strangely well with what’s going on in the hockey game at points. It’s kind of hilarious.

And BSG was a fracking great show.

Yeah it was…well I’m almost done Season 3. Lost track when it was on so decided to wait until it came outr on video. Great to watch it with out commericals. Man, did the SyFy blow it with this show. People who never watched sci-fi were into it…totally had a chance to really do something….but you know all that straight to video shit and Ghost Hunters are low overhead quick buck fixes. Maybe it was recession related. I suppose Caprica is cheaper. I’m guessing no space scenes. Haven’t seen it yet.
I loved BSG, one of my favorite shows of all time. Great ending too.
Caprica is pretty weak IMO. And no, no space scenes.
There are also one or two straight to DVD movies as well.
They are actually going to make a pilot for a new show that takes place after Caprica but before BSG about the final year of the Cylon war. Of course Moore is not involved so I wonder how good it will be.

Now the situation with Zherdev finally makes sense! They are just getting things ready and opening up the roster so we can see Zac Rinaldo bring some of his offensive magic to the NHL. I mean c’mon he’s probably a 7 goal per season OHL performer!
Yeah I can hardly wait for the jump we’ll get from Wellwood’s -11 so far this year. Probably Pat Maroon’s fault, i’m sure. Now that he’s gone, this will give the other guys 4 or 5 games to catch up to his goal output, so there’s a plus.
I would gladly take rinaldo in orange. He’s such a boss.

I’m on the fence. I’m glad a penalty was called, but I don’t think it warranted a 5 and a 10.
It looked like he went high, it was a tad late, but it wasn’t an elbow, it wasn’t a charge, and it wasn’t a textbook boarding.

Blindside is only in the new rule, which does not cover that hit. If anything, it would be checking from behind or boarding, which is why I’m not sure how I feel.
I think that needs to be called, but I don’t think it warranted the penalty that was called, and I’m not sure what it technically is.

If I was calling it, I’d say boarding – although the refs never agree with what I think. I’ve seen Hunter hit guys high before (mostly because of his size). I do agree it doesn’t fit under the new rule since it wasn’t to his head. The damage came from the whiplash of his head on the boards, still under the old rules I think you would have seen the same call that we got.
Guy hit Mez after he had released the puck, from behind—called boarding, gave him 5 and a game misconduct

I found a clip on YouTube already about the game from the CBC’s site. They did a good job of showing the fights and reasons behind some of them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssg5VJjWPNQ
If you watch the Briere “cross-check” in slow motion(start the clip at 0:50, watch closely), the stick goes over Nielsen’s head (or at least grazes it). He will probably still get a suspension for it being intentional; however, visual evidence might make it more lenient (hopefully)

Carcillo, Nodl, and Zherdev should be in every night. I don’t think these last two games are indicative of who should be in the lineup. Shelley should not be. If we’re playing a heavy weight scratch Carcillo or Nodl. That’s how it should be. I know you said not to pay attention to your post, i’m just voicing my opinion to the masses via your comment..
You think they played well against Pittsburgh?

I think they played alright. Not spectacular, but alright. And tonight they beat the Islanders. So, I’m withholding judgment.

Im fine with discipline in Lavys system, but our playes play well under fire(playoffs, when the coach rags on them after a couple bad games, and these games where they play scrappy). Its like they play good when a loss would be embarrassing.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
He is a good coach and I trust him to handle it all. I know Lavy has played a different style elsewhere but he doesn’t seem to be clashing with the Flyers by any means. They just need to reproduce the dominating effort every night. Not saying they will dominate every game, but they need to strive for it. Lavy seems to expect this and nothing less, which he should.
Nodl tells me he is fine. Went into board early in game. Several sources say Meszaros is OK. Players told taken out for precaution
I didn't perform well when it mattered most.
