Andreas Nodl makes Flyers as team cuts seven more, finalizes 23-man roster
It's a busy news day today, to say the least.
In addition to putting Johan Backlund on waivers and releasing Bill Guerin, the Flyers have cut seven players, sending them directly to the Adirondack Phantoms.
According to reports from beat writers on Twitter during a conference call with Paul Holmgren this afternoon, forwards Mike Testwuide, David Laliberte, Jon Kalinski and Ben Holmstrom are among the cuts. Defensemen Marc-Andre Bourdon and Erik Gustafsson have also been sent down.
As a result, the Flyers have trimmed their roster by nine today. One youngster makes the team, and his name is Andreas Nodl. He had an impressive training camp, despite the fact that he can't seem to score as an NHLer. Either way, his two-way play and his defensive attributes make him a valuable fourth liner. That's why he's made the team and Guerin did not.
The 23-man roster is now set, thanks to injuries to Ian Laperriere and Michael Leighton. It's likely that Laperriere goes on long-term injury reserve to free up some cap space, while Leighton could also be headed for LTIR. We'll find out in due time.
Take an updated look at the depth chart after the jump.

Excited for Nodl, hope he gets some looks on the 3rd line though since it’s important to know if he can do what he was drafted to do, which is chip in offensively.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Also, excited to see if the value of my game worn Nodl jerseys have risen at all.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Answering both your questions no and no. But I am glad he is on the team smart fast two way forwards with hands of stone are good to have and with Powe I guess having two is better one.
1) I didn’t ask any questions…especially to you about Nodl
2) I’m sick of this hands of stone thing. There is a huge difference between not having hands, and not being confident. And I certainly won’t be relying on your analysis of any players skill set or skill level.
3) I’m already regretting responding to you
Is this the right room for an argument?
Almost, but it was up before I got the chance to ask.

For what it’s worth, it looks like the Phantoms will have decent D and goaltending.
The forwards are another story.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
He scored a goal last night !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Flyers will regret sending him down ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Haha, get this. Someone with the last name Testwuide registered on the site, yelled at Geoff.

Geoff’s man-crush on Boosh has to be the 1st member based tee-shirt just ahead of your hatred towards me I think we could at least agree to that.
You misunderstand…this is simply a warning to the Nodl haters. If I really hated you, I would have circled the woman in the yellow shirt and wrote Chris Lanci next to it.
If I hated someone I never met, I think I would hate myself. Do you frustrate the crap out of me at times, most certainly, but I don’t hate you…in fact, I don’t think I hate anyone I know, talk to, or interact with on any website.
With that said, if we are both at a BSH event, and you are bashing Nodl, keep an eye out for flying bats…but frankly, that goes for everyone.

So ....
Any guesses as to how the lines shake out? Does Noodle play 4th line, or does Carbomb? Who plays with Carter, since (in my opinion) having Zherdev and Carter together seems a waste? Does G play wing, center, or just ‘forward’, since Lavvy’s system doesn’t have such specific assignments and lanes? Will my dream of having G feed Carter’s high-slot shot for 50 goals in a season come about finally?
Hartnell – Briere – Leino
JVR – Carter – Giroux
Carcillo – Richards – Zherdev
Nodl – Betts – Powe
Shelly / Lappy (LTIR)
Pronger – Carle
Timonen – Coburn
Meszaros – O’Donnell
Walker / Barty
Boucher
Bobs
Leighton (LTIR)
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
Not liking the D pairings….and also increadibly suprised we didnt dumb walker and keep bourdon (which i cant spell) considering the last few games
What would rather rather see at D? We kept the top two pairs, which were the best defense in the playoffs last year. And the third is definitely an improvement.
well mix it up, put some of the proven D on with new. It has to many holes, and the top two would be played to much. I say
Pronger-Messy
Timonen-o’donnel
Carle-Coburn
put walker and bartulis in whenever, and as needed do Pronger and Timonen
I daresay O’Donnell would take serious offense at your referring to him as “unproven”. Somehow 1100 NHL games doesn’t scream ‘newbie’ to me.

You have two pairings—or at least two D-men—who will chew up 20+ minutes a game. Your third pairing is only getting 9-14 minutes, anyway. Why waste your three and four there? Treat your third pairing like your fourth line: give them a small, specific role and make sure your better players decide the game.
The whole point of shoring up the third D line was to take minutes away from Timmo and Pronger. it would be a waste to not use them.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Take some minutes away, yes. Make it so any of the three pairs can be played in any situation, yes. Mess with the chemistry between the current pairings, no.
It’s still not an even 20 minute split between the pairs, and Sean O’Donnell can’t handle the same minutes as Pronger or Kimmo, if paired with them. A good third pairing means reducing their minutes from high twenties to mid twenties, not low twenties.
Then it was an absolute waste to go out and get any defensemen they did this off season. If you do not reduce their time on ice to lower 20’s, then ANY money spent on that 3rd pair was pissed away. Pronger averaged about 25 minutes a game last (regular) season, anyway. That is mid twenties, so it would have to be lower 20’s if it’s reduced.
I agree that the pairings should stay as they were. And they should be able to play in any situation.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Well, the last sentence explains why you spend the money. The third pairing needs to take a chunk of the minutes in regular season games and, more importantly, allow less goals than they did last year. The upgrades should suffice to do that.
Come playoff time, it’s down to 4-5 defensemen, and I don’t want Kimmo, having played the entire season with O’Donnell, now forced to manufacture chemistry in the opening round.
You switched over to argueing against me with my own argument.
I never mentioned breaking the pairs from last year. I said that the 3rd pair was built to take minutes away from the top 2 to keep them better rested. Which means they go from around 25 minutes a game to around 20. (Very rough and situational numbers). Come playoff time, you should be able to raise their time on ice up, but not feel the need to HAVE to hide the 3rd pair AS MUCH as they have in the past.
The whole point is to not wear down Kimmo and Pronger as babdly as they had to last year.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
My last response was lost. But it seems you’re arguing against me using my argument. Which is kinda like agreeing.
The point of boosting the defensive 3rd pair is to lessen Kimmo and Pronger’s time on ice during the regular season and Playoff time and keep them fresher. Preferably, I don’t want to HAVE to cut down to 4 defense men in the playoffs.
I never said to break up last year’s pairing. In fact it would be pure idiocy to do that, especially in the beginning of the season (except that Pronger won’t be playing for a little, someone will be moving up.)
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
I really want to see a Giroux Richards Zherdev line.
But then the third and 4th lines I’m not so sure about.
Obviously Hartnell Briere Leino should stick together.
Then maybe Carter JVR and ______ (nodl? powe? carcillo?)
the fourth line centered by Betts with whoever’s left…
We have so many D-men… fuck it let Lavvy figure it out.
Hexwall.
Nodl is actually not useless in the offensive zone. On a line with Carter and JVR have a 2 way guy who can skate and has reasonable(albeit snakebitten) offensive skills might not be the worst thing. Especially if you see Carter and JVR having big/breakout years.

Lindros rates up there, but he isn’t the greatest. The Flyers turned around a lot when he got here, but until Desjardins and LeClair and that other guy (Gilbert Dionne … ) the team really didn’t take off.
You can argue that they had to bring Desjardins and LeClair in FOR Lindros.

It's gotta be
1. Briere
2. Betts
3. Pronger
Our team is that much stronger
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I would too.
My list:
1. Walker
2. Shelley
3. Carcillo
Oops, thought you said bottom 3.
In all seriousness, Kimmo is fantastic.
"I wish it went back to, like, old school, like banana hammocks." Ryan Lochte on FINA suit ruling
unless our goalie is Luongo, Briggy, Miller, or fat Marty, kimmo should be higher then anyone. Hes a top 10 defensive-man in the league.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
I didnt say best player, I said most important. Just because he’s top ten doesn’t, to me at least, mean he’s more important than the man between the pipes.
But, a goalie will always be in net. So if I stepped in for the flyers, would I be top three? A goalie is important, but the way that the flyers are structured, defense comes first. Our defense saves the goalie, not the other way around.
I think that’s wrong. The whole idea of having the awesome defense is so that we don’t have to have a goalie of importance.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
If the goalie isn’t playing well it doesn’t matter how good the defense is. Conversely even if the defense is playing poorly the goalie can still bail a team out.
Ok, we’re talking individuals here. Given that “goalie” can refer to any of 4 current Flyers, they are completely interchangeable.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I guess i should have said whoever ends up as the starter. I’m not sure who it could be by year’s end.
So right now, your top three are still Mike, Pronger and unknown starter?
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I would think the playoffs proved that it’s less important who is in the crease than who is in front of it. Boucher gets hurt in 2010, we still advance to the finals. Timonen gets hurt in 2008, we were dead in the water.
The sense I’m getting is that more Predators fans know his value than Flyers fans. C’mon, guys: he’s really fuckin good.
Whoever it is, isn’t Ryan Miller. And because of that, or until that day, our goalie is not a game changer/ as important of a facet to this team as Kimmo. Not many teams can provide two number one d-men split on two pairings to shutdown other teams top two lines.
8 defensemen? why? I don’t understand why they didnt just bury Walker’s salary in the minors. 1.7 is a lot for a guy who will (hopefully) barely see the ice
I’m thinkin’ Pronger won’t play, but will play before 10 games and 24 days.

Noooo that was about Jordan Staal. That exact quote was used for Staal. Holmgren was interviewed today and said Pronger will practice with the team tomorrow and is “on pace” or some cliche saying like that for Thursday.
Oh yeah for sure. Not that that means anything but it’s more comforting than Staal’s status. I remember that specifically cause I was really glad to hear he won’t be ready for Thursday.
I’m no conspiracy theorist, but the Caps two top players have only missed a combined 6 games maybe less to injury since becoming Caps
Homer usually tells the truth, Like how he believes leighton is a starter and how he will trade Gagne, he did fulfill his promises. Now, obviously him being truthful is more depressing.

Um… he never said he would trade Gagne and even if he said that about Leighton, he is not a starter.

This is probably indicative of Pronger not starting the season. So we will be carrying 7 healthy d-men just in case. Once Pronger is healthy, that will change
I just hope that whenever Pronger comes back he’s 100%, no use rushing him back at all. Plus shorter season for him means he’ll have more energy in the playoffs.
And maybe he does mean Canadian Thanksgiving, but we’ll see. I hope after he comes back we waive Walker, unless he somehow has some good games.

I'm really curious how Zherdev is used.
The guy is on a nice roll entering the regular season opener. I’d like to see Lavy pair him with Giroux or Richards. If he can start off hot and bang home a bunch of Goals early on his confidence might really carry him to a career year.
Like somebody said earlier, Nikolay with Carter would be a bit of a waste, and I totally agree. So based off that principle, lets try to piece this together…
We all Know Hartnell-Briere-Lieno is a lock. Richards is obv the top line Center. The first question mark we’re gonna run into is whether Carter or Giroux is gonna play center on that other line. Personally I’m gonna lean towards it being Giroux, I think Lavy is hell-bent upon striking up a chemistry between Richard and Carter. That leaves Giroux with Zherdev on his right wing. Then fill in the blanks with JVR and Carcillo on each left wing. Either way, Its gonna be a win-win situation, Giroux with Carter is pretty sexy also.
...more thoughts
-what about Carter on the Left Wing? He shoots right, that shot could be deadly comin from that side with better angles on net. I was a righty shot with a great shot, always played LW and loved it. It creates great shooting lanes.
-didn’t even mention Betts. is it possible that Giroux and Carter both play wings? Goddamn this team is stacked.
