So I’m confused, do ONLY the rookies compete in the skills competition or do they just get mixed in with the regular NHL All-Stars throughout the events?

Ok good, I was hoping that was the case but a couple times it made it seem like only the rookies would get to do stuff.

Yeah seems that way. Very disappointing. Those were always a lot of fun.

Were they? Were they…..really?

by Snevik on Nov 11, 2010 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, yes really. When I was at the Atlanta All Star game, that was easily the highlight of the weekend…it was a 3v3 pick up game and it was extremely entertaining.

So I’ll say it again, yes! yes…really!

Maybe they just didn’t translate to TV well. That was always was the time of night that I would yawn and think “Well, it’s Saturday night, I could be doing something else.”

Yeah, I’m with you.

Actually that’s what I say about the entire All-Star weekend. But I’m going this year. Do’h.

Honestly, I was mostly kidding anyway. I don’t usually watch the All-Star Game on TV (although I always watch the skills comp) but I think going in person is going to be pretty awesome.

I know, I’m just giving you crap.

I think going changed by attitude about AS Weekend. It was a lot of fun watching the practices, getting closer access to players you usually don’t get to see, etc. Plus I was in a different city, having fun with my friend.

I think it being on Saturday night has a lot to do with it.

Is this the right room for an argument?

by DLJr on Nov 11, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely. But I’d stay in to watch a Flyers game, or a close Blackhawks game (only because they are easy access and I enjoy rooting against them). I’m just saying that it wasn’t exciting enough to hold my attention, and therefore not “a lot of fun.”

by Snevik on Nov 11, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

I was confused on how the captains got selected. IMO it would be cool if the SCF team captains were the ASG captains with whichever captain that won the cup getting first pick.

by srv1084 on Nov 11, 2010 11:24 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The players that are selected to attend the All Star Weekend will vote on captains and Assistant Captains, so 6 players in total will be divided up into two teams ahead of time, and they will then pick their teams on that Friday.

by Prometheus74 on Nov 11, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

That’s kind of what I thought after reading the yahoo article. Is bettman going to pay players to vote for Crosby?

by srv1084 on Nov 11, 2010 12:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

If he is not a Captain, he will be assigned an Assistant Captain, just like he was on the Canadian Olympic Team

Datsyuk is my favorite non-Flyer. Before last season (when he did drop off a bit), I consistently argued that he was actually the best all-around player in hockey, not Crosby or Ovechkin.

by cocon1120 on Nov 11, 2010 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I don’t actually think that anyone said that Crosby & Ovechkin are the best all-around players. Best forwards more like it.

The debate is always “Who is the best player in the NHL?” And it’s usually framed by the media as being a choice between Crosby and Ovechkin.

It’s just that I view “best” to be best all-around, whereas the media views “best” to be highest-scoring.

by cocon1120 on Nov 11, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I hate saying but it is still Crosby. He is that good and makes every one around that much better. The only thing he can’t do is fight and keep Malkin’s jock out of his mouth.

by chrislanci on Nov 11, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s Crosby now. He’s become a better shooter, better faceoff man, and better defender over the past two seasons. But before last season, I believe Datsyuk was the best player in the NHL.

No fair. Nobody on the Caps is asked to actually play defense, so ti’s not a fair comparison.

I go Corsby, Datsyuk, and Ovie in that order usually. If I’m building a team to win and have the fantasy first pick, I’d go with Crosby or Datsyuk, if I’m building a team to sell tickets, I may take Ovie.

Is this the right room for an argument?

by DLJr on Nov 11, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Ovi will stop selling tickets if they stop winning. Winning is more important Devils being the exception but there location is shitty.

by chrislanci on Nov 11, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Okay…I’m just offering my perspective in fantasy Owner/GM hypothetical land. I think Ovie is the most exciting player to watch, so I think I could market him the best, get the best TV contract and more national televised games with him, sell the most jerseys with him (though since Crosby is Canadian, this might not be true), and bring in the most casual fans with him. Obviously winning helps, hence why their would be more than one round to this fantasy draft.

Is this the right room for an argument?

After reading The Phantoms Forum, it sounds almost like Paddock coaches long enough to get the team winning again and then installs Joe Paterson as full-time coach. It would be an easy transition—Paterson’s learning as an assistant now and, at some point, Kjell will be back from Sweden and ready to resume his assistant coaching duties then.

Something that had been bothering me was that I kept seeing Darren Jensen’s name when Bob was closing in on 7 consecutive wins in starts as a rookie. ESPN and CSNPhilly had graphics that said Bob Jensen had 7 straight wins as a rookie, but everyone here and elsewhere said that it was Pelle. I looked it up today and Pelle had 7 straight wins as a starter. However, Darren Jensen did get seven straight Ws for the Flyers as a rookie (only having played one NHL game the season before) in 1985 – 1986. One of those games he came in relief for Bob Froese and in another game during his “streak” he actually started and got replaced by Froese who was saddled with the L.

Knock-off Jerseys?

Has anyone bought a Flyers jersey from websites like YukiJersey, TaraJersey, SaleJerseys, or similar? They’re labeled as Reebok jerseys, but I assume these are fakes, not unlike buying a knock-off Rolex watch or Louis Vuitton bag — but are they worth it? For around $50 plus shipping, they seem like a great deal, but I was wondering if anyone has purchased one of these and regretted the decision? Thanks.

I’ve bought one from YukiJersey and it’s totally good by me. If you don’t care to know in your head that it’s a knock off, it’s really hard for anyone else to tell that it is unless they know jerseys extremely well. I actually just bought a jersey for one of my friends from there last night.

Yeah for me it doesn’t work…but if you don’t care, then it works just fine. I can go to a game and pick out fake replica vs real replicas and fake authentics versus real authetics pretty easy. But I’m a huge jersey snob. If you don’t care about it at all, they are perfectly fine to purchase from, they won’t steal your money or anything.

I got a Richards jersey from a similar seller two seasons ago, although it was through eBay. About $70 after shipping. Its the orange jersey, which at the time was the alternate 3rd. The orange is a little off compared to what they wear now. Its not as bright. Also the the white arm stripes are a little wider and the numbers fit in them.

Anyway, the jersey fit well, was a Reebok with the tags although it had a fight strap which I don’t think is standard. The logo crest, captain ‘C’ and numbers all looked good. BUT the name plate was awful. You could tell it was done by hand, and not very well. The letters are skewed and the white name plate background was all stretched out, even over the seams of the shoulder.

So that’s the only complaint. Might be better off with a blank jersey, but it seems like alot of those sites only come personalized. Richards is the first player jersey I ever got, after years of almost getting Lindros, Brind’amour, Recchi…only to have them get traded away, I figured Richards was a safe bet after he signed that 12 year contract.

I got mine from SaleJerseys and it looks legit. However, the guy who put the order through for me got scammed so be aware that there are not so honest people using that site in order to make money. The people who actually work for the site are fine, somehow someone else got his order details and ripped him off

A couple of months ago, I bought a Richards Stanley Cup jersey and a football jersey from Tarajersey.com. I’m pleased with both.

Between my friends and I, we’ve placed 3 or 4 orders through jersey101&tarajersey and we’ve yet to have a problem.

I don’t know … I think the unofficial retirement of the number is good enough of a tribute here. While it is tragic what happened imagine explaining the retired numbers to someone younger: “Yeah #16 he captained the team to 2 Stanley Cups and embodied what it was to be a Flyer. Yeah #7 he was the most prolific goal scorer in team history, a major component to the teams success those years. Yeah #31 he won a Vezina Trophy then died in a car accident.”
… it just doesn’t quite flow well.

But there’s a Barry Ashbee precedent you’re overlooking. I think Lindbergh has to be just as deserving, it’s just a timing issue at this point. It’s been a long, long time.

My parents were hit by drunk drivers 10 years ago, my mom will never walk without assistance. When it happens to your family, you have a whole different outlook on things.

The guy was a hell of a goalie, but I don’t care for him and the decision he made that day. If that makes me a jerk, so be it. He injured 2 other people, and the accident was a school…those things just don’t sit well with me.

It’s okay, not your fault. I still get emotional about it, and I kind of unknowingly set up a trap, my apologies.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish that he died for his mistake or anything, I just wish he never made that decision (but he did, and I still can’t forgive people for that yet). My parents don’t hold it against him, but I do for whatever reason.

Thanks for that perspective — I never really thought of it that way.

I think the Lindbergh story will always be a tragedy because he had so much potential, was so dedicated to the franchise but in the end, literally threw it all away by being reckless. I hope his story continues to be shared among players and fans, because it’s a good example of how much we stand to lose by taking life for granted.

If you are interested I would suggest reading the new book, it gave a lot of insight into Per-Eric and the circumstances that led to him drinking (rarely drank ever during the season, 4 days off from Keenan) and mistake of driving (took Porsche b/c Mercedes broke down on way to game).

But I am with Don on this one. Look at the time. Pele’s accident occurred when the MADD movement was just starting and drunk driving wasn’t seen as a serious crime.

While I agree with you, I disagree on why.

I see Ben’s point, and it’s a good point. But to me, the way the Phillies do it is the preferred route. If a number is going to be retired, that player should either be in the sport’s hall of fame, or have achieved some arbitrary amount of team records.

In other words, I disagree with the Ashbee retirement, and I don’t want Lindbergh up there because I think that club should be very small.

Where do I find a stat that would tell me single skater save percentage? For example, what is the save percentage of Flyers’ goalies when Jeff Carter is on the ice? I know people have used the stat before, I just can’t seem to find it. Thanks.

Thanks alot. I’m looking to write an article on O’Donnell, and one of the key caveats was going to be what I assumed to be his abnormally high on-ice save percentage.

by cocon1120 on Nov 11, 2010 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

The 3rd pair in general this year has been helped by an above average ESS%. But it’s early. Are you going back to previous years with O’Donnell or is this just a look at him on the Flyers?

Is this the right room for an argument?

by DLJr on Nov 11, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

A little of both, but mainly about whether his team-leading plus/minus is a mirage, and using that as a lead in for an explanation of his role on the team.

by cocon1120 on Nov 11, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

You mean something like this?

2. Sean O`Donnell’s plus/minus

Not to keep harping on plus/minus, but the most obvious outlier on the blueline is O`Donnell. Currently, he is tied for best plus/minus on defense with a plus-3. In over 136.5 minutes so far this year, O`Donnell has only been on the ice for one opposition goal, the overtime winner against St. Louis. As a result, Flyers goaltenders have a 100% save percentage at 5-on-5 with him on the ice, which cannot be sustained.

When you factor in that O`Donnell is giving up over 31.3 shots per 60 minutes and starting in his defensive zone 63.6% of the time (most on the team), there will be pucks that find their way behind his goaltender. Based just on how often he’s being placed in a difficult spot – his zone start – O`Donnell will see his plus/minus decline. Factoring in how many shots the opposition gets and that none of them have gone in at five-on-five yet, his plus-3 rating is bound to fall.

:) Don’t let that stop you though.

Geoff could you clarify again for me.

Could a high ESS% mean O’donnell does a good keep players to the outside and not giving up quality scoring chances.

Or he is playing against lesser skilled players and there poor shooters and finishers.

Also is the high shoots against not only a product of his high defensive zone start but also the fact he plays with lesser forwards who aren’t generating any sustainable pressure. When leads to more defensive zone starts and more shots against.

by chrislanci on Nov 11, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think you’re highly correct in everything you said.

A high ESS% is affected by the player’s contributions. In other words, it could mean he does a good job of not giving up quality scoring chances.

But when you see that his 0.982 is the highest among defenseman, his partner has a 0.963 (which will likely also decrease, though not as much as O`Donnell’s), and his QualTeam/QualComp rank 3rd and 2nd on the team, it’s an outlier. He’s playing with worse teammates than guys with a lower save percentage and against stronger competition than those with worse save percentages.

So, could O`Donnell finish with the highest save percentage at the end of the year? Certainly. Does he play a role in allowing that to be high? Certainly. But having the opposition record a 1.8% shooting percentage cannot be sustained. He’s getting lucky, the question is just how lucky.

Lastly, the high defensive zone starts definitely play a role in having him give up so many shots. As far as teammates not pushing the puck forward, his Corsi QoT suggests he has the best teammates outside of Carle/Pronger. So, his zone starts (second worst on the team) definitely increase the total number of shots, but that would suggest more goals against, thus a lower save percentage.

I hope that was easily followed. In general, you’re right – everything ties together. But none of it suggests O`Donnell can keep the opposition at a 1.8% shooting percentage.

He’s not limiting shots but any regards though, he has the 3rd worst shots against per 60 of the team. He does have the 3rd highest blocked shots for, but no difference from the rest of the team in missed shots.
A PDO of 1086 means he is going to regress

Just looking at PDO too, the only players under 1000 are Carcillo, Mike, Coburn and Carle. Four guys who haven’t had the greatest start to the year,

Definitely. Chris was making the distinction that the high number of shots were the result of zone starts and teammates, which they kind of are. Except none of it explains his GAON/60, SvPct, etc.

I’m secretly terrified of waiving Walker, because I have this lingering fear that Holmgren will call him back up later in the season and we’ll be stuck with a $850K cap hit for a non-player for the next two years.

It would make no sense, but I still wouldn’t put it past Holmgren.

No, but he would have to stay down for the rest of that season.

At the beginning of the next year, I believe he could make the team out of camp and not have to pass through re-entry. At least that’s how I’ve always assumed it worked.
