Remembering Pelle Lindbergh, 25 years later
It's been 25 years since the death of Pelle Lindbergh.
We've stumbled upon these 25 year old videos from Channel 6 Action News. Their sports staff, including a very young Scott Palmer and, of course, the late Gary Papa, put together these tributes in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
Pretty powerful stuff, even after all these years.

Thanks very much for sharing this. Does anyone know who Ann-Christine Bärlund was? It looks like she’s buried with Pelle?

Ahh, yeah, that makes sense. Did a quick search and Bill Meltzer mentions that she unfortunately died of cancer just two years after Pelle’s passing. Thanks.

Jesus Christ. That must have been terrible. Imagine being their parents. No wait… rather not.
I'm in love with the Lightning, the Flyers are my fling and I have a crush on the Flyers fans.

I remember Pelle and how excited we were as Flyers fans. It was just devastating not only as a Flyers fan but as a human tragedy in general.
It was the morning of November 10, 1985 and as it was most Saturday and Sunday mornings my father and I loaded up the car at about 5 am to set out on our way to at least one hockey game for the day. This day our game was scheduled against the Gladiators who played at the Coliseum in Voorhees, NJ. On our way to the game we were detoured and in the distance noticed the commotion of police and emergency vehicles. We later found out that we had passed by one of the largest tragedies in Flyers history. If you haven’t read Behind the White Mask you are doing yourself a disservice as a Flyers fan. Whether you are old enough to remember Pelle or not, this is a step back into the history and tragedy that shaped this franchise. As a fan it is a must read.

If it was available over here, I’d buy it.

The English version is translated from a Swedish version which might be available over there. Not sure if you speak Swedish, but you Euros all seem to speak each others languages, so I’m sure you probably do, haha.

Never saw him play as I was born 6 years after his death but just his story makes him one of my favorite Flyers of all time. What happened to him was terrible and going off of what my dad has told me he was going to be the best. Favorite thing about him was him telling his teacher “it didnt matter cause he was going to be the goalie for the Flyers” nothing beats that.

Thank you for posting these videos. Channel 6 Action News was my favorite news station in Philly (a bit of a sad coincidence that I rememeber three such tributes on that station: Pelle’s tribute, and the tributes for both Jim O’Brien (a very colorful and funny weatherman on Channel 6 news who died in a skydiving accident – further irony, it happened at a local airport about 2 miles away from where I lived at the time) and, of course, for Gary Papa).
I always wondered how the team would have developed had he stayed alive. I always felt so bad for his parents too. Losing one child is absolutely dreadful; I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose more than that…
R.I.P., Pelle – a Flyer forever.
