It’s really not up to us fans to decided that unfortunately. Sid and Ovie make these decisions for the league.

The rest of the NHL is starting to take notice
Carter is going to act like a spoiled brat when Giroux and Pronger gets voted into the All-Star game and he dose not.
I don’t want him t be known as an elite player yet because that means he’ll be coming with an elite price tag this summer. Lock him in long term Homer with a cap hit close to 5 hopefully.
I want to see “G” get a 7+ year contract with the Flyers

I had the same thoughts but its too late.
Now I hope he proves without a doubt that, if the Flyers can only afford one player, they HAVE to sign Giroux over Carter.
I think I’d rank Leino higher too. G first if they can only sign 1, but I’d rather keep Ville second if there is room for two.

So if he ends up looking like Scott Hamilton he’ll end up playing mid 80’s Tim Kerr?

He’ll top out at about 30 goals a year, but the shorter his hair goes the less he’ll fall over.

If Johnny gets into the HHOF, what does he go in as? Canadien or Flyer? He won hockey’s ultimate prize with the Habs but do all those years in Philly counter that? Thoughts?

I think of his 2 OT winners when he was with the Habs that he scored against the Kings in the ‘93 finals. I’d be fine with him going in as a Hab or a Flyer.
Is this the right room for an argument?
‘93? Oh the year I wasn’t even attending grammar school yet. I sure remember those OT winners ;)

That was kind of the point of my joke though, what you remember depends on how old you are (though I was only 13 when he scored those, but I’ll remember them).

You have to be kidding here Krieder. LeClair won the cup as a Canadian and scored sum big goals in that series but he scored the same number of goals in 1995 as a Flyers as he did his entire five year career as a Hab. He never scored more than 19 goals in a season as Hab. He played more games and scored more points as a Flyer include 5 straight 40+ goal seasons. That is what is going to get him in. Two Game Winners in the Cup Winner year doesn’t get you into the HHOF.
He won the cup. Neither you, nor I, know how that feels and how much it would effect a decision of this magnitude.

I don’t think it that matters he was a nobody on that team. Remember he was just a throw in the Recchi deal Desjardin was the main piece. Probably the best trade in Flyers History.
He scored an OT goal, didn’t he? I’m pretty sure no one who scores and OT goal in the SCF is a nobody after that.

That’s true, but go back on Youtube and find the interview Coatesy did w/ Rico on Eric Desjardins night. Rico said he’d rather be remembered as a Flyer, not as a Canadien, despite how integral he was to the cup win. LeClair could realistically feel the same way.

One things for sure...
My brother sees John on a regular basis, and even though he’s been out of hockey for a few years, he still gets recognized everywhere he goes in the Philly area, and hounded for pictures and autographs. There will never be an area that has the same amount of affection and adoration for the guy. Since he chose to stay here in the Philly area and raise his family here, something tells me he would go in as a Flyer.
If John Leclair gets into the HHOF it will be only on the coat tails of Eric Lindros as was his career success. I like Johnny but for real he should not be in over Eric, ever!
Just Call Me "M"!
The problem, though, is that Lindros played 200 fewer games and won 1 fewer Cup. That goes a long way.
I see your point – Lindros was a much more dominant player and has an MVP award to go with it – but longevity is crucial for the voters.

He was also able to keep his production up when Lindros was out of the lineup. And in those last few seasons, that was quite a bit.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
His production was virtually cut in half when not playing with Lindros. Going from 100 point per season to 50 points per season is no slouch but hardly HHOF worthy. He was great but a one trick pony that benefited from an absolute all world superstar taking the most attention.
Just Call Me "M"!
What are you referring to when you say “cut in half”? I don’t feel like looking it up, so are you saying when Lindros was traded, injured, or what? Because my initial thinking is: if LeClair’s production dropped in the early 2000s, it probably had something to do with age as well as the lack of Lindros.

His point totals. They were never as high when he didn’t play with Lindros. That is both in Montreal and after the Lindros era in Philly. All I am saying is LeClair isn’t a HHOF based on the guy who affords him consideration is not in yet.
Just Call Me "M"!
It doesn’t matter to you that the time he was with Lindros was from age 25-30? Surely Lindros had an effect, but penalizing the guy for hitting his prime with Lindros and declining with age has to account for something.

I can completely agree that age and the back injuries have to be factored into his performance decline. Bottom line is that LeClair’s career was never forecasted the way it ended up. He was a throw in on the Recchi for Desjardins trade and made the most of playing next to arguably one of the best players of his era. This is just my opinion of why he isn’t HOF material. I loved Johnny for being a great Flyer and an american player, Lindros first then maybe LeClair. Jari Kuri isn’t in the hall of fame if not for Gretzsky.
Just Call Me "M"!
Yeah, I don’t think we disagree. I was just curious.

Flyer. No doubt. (I was born in 1990, so I don’t remember anything else). He had 49 goals as a Hab and 24 as a vomit Penguin. He had 333 as a Flyer, scoring 50, three times. No way he goes in as anything but a Flyer.

I was born in 1990, so I don’t remember anything else
You can stop there. If you can’t remember it, than you really can’t voice an opinion that speaks of knowing John as both a Hab and a Flyer. Though I understand the argument made by Chris and you, it means more from Chris since he is old enough to at least remember the ’93 cup run.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I was born 3 days before 1990 and I remember his first year in Philly(feels old now). I hated him soley because he was a former Canadian at first, but he became my favorite Flyer of all time.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
That’s fine. I’m just saying it’s hard to take someone who can’t remember him having two OT goals in the Stanley Cup FInals opinion ahead of someone who can remember both his time in Montreal and his time here in Philadelphia.
That series was very exciting to watch as a kid, and I’ll always remember it. Of course I always remember his team as being the Flyers, but if I had to single out an accomplishment of his, it be those 2 OT winners in the finals in 1993.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Well, I think that stats are #1 for entering the HOF, and his stats came as a Flyer. Yeah he won with Mont. But he was his best as a Flyer. Besides, he still lives in the area and stuff, he obviously like it here.
Flyers 10-11 season slogan: "Remember Emery?"
That’s fine, I think he will go in as a Flyer as well. But, he was drafted by the Habs, and those 2 goals were the biggest of his career. It’s not that he just won with Montreal, he was a huge reason they won with those 2 goals, winning games 3 and 4 for them. Desjardin’s hat trick in game 2, and the blown call on Carbonneau covering the puck in his own crease in game 3 were the other big stories. I just don’t think you can appreciate the other side of the story unless you watched it and lived through it…the seres had 3 OT games out of the 5 games, it was extremely entertaining.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Funny thing is that those two overtime goals were his only goals of the that entire post season. Really if not for Desjardins on that Habs team they might not have won that cup.
Just Call Me "M"!
Yeah, he was just Johnny on the spot for those two (not trying to be clever). I just think that would be special for me if I were to try to put myself in his shoes. Eric was a HUGE reason why they won that year; Roy didn’t hurt them either.
I agree with your over all assessment of him as a potential HOFer though. I think his nationality may help him get in if he makes into the HOF.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Haha. Agreed.

Hartnell did something hilarious at the first intermission. He started skating out during mites on ice like he was going to grab the puck and go. He towered over all the little kids playing. I wanted him to take it in for a goal. He would’ve gotten the hat trick.
Nice. Wasn’t he the only one that looked like he was actually happy to bump fists and see the kids on the ice during the home opener team introduction?

Bob & Carcillo
Not sure if they showed this on TV. But as Carcillo was getting up after he blocked that shot, Bob skated out of his net and gave him an appreciative stick tap. It’s not something you see very often, but I enjoyed seeing it…Bob seems to be endearing himself to the team quite well.
Is this the right room for an argument?
There were many comments on this on the game thread. Very cool of Bob. I think it’s great for the team that even though he’s got a huge language barrier they still seem to communicate and have a sort of camaraderie.

Even my wife, who is a casual hockey fan, is wondering why #93 doesn’t hustle on the ice. It’s quite obvious that all the talk about his was spot on, and the Flyers chose to ignore it.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I thought he looked far more responsible last night. The only times I noticed him coasting back were when the Flyers had 4 guys back to cover only 3 Canes b/c their Dmen were so far behind the play.
Is this the right room for an argument?
There was at least one play where Zherdev watched the puck sail right past him, and didn’t even attempt to get a stick on it. Stuff like that drives me crazy. He definitely can give more. Look at JVR, Leino or others. Those guys are giving everything they have. I just don’t see that from Zherdev…yet.

They definitely showed this on TV, and Jonesy commented about it, saying what a good guy Bobs is for coming over to give Carcillo a pat on the back thanking him for blocking the shot. But, they also were joking a bit that since Carcillo was writhing in pain, he may not have appreciated the stick tap on the back at that exact moment!
Sarauj, Latvija!
I found it freaking adorible. Puppies and kittens don’t make me go ‘aww’ and melt inside, ice hockey does. Hahahah, sad but true. I hope Carcillo and Bobs are freinds, cause then it would be two for one, if your me.

You need to keep Boucher over Leighton for reasons not related to the cap.
Boucher was the last Flyers rookie netminder to come in and play well and generate hype. After that rookie year he could never quite get back to that level on a consistent basis. You need to keep Boucher to be a mentor to Bobrovsky to help him avoid a similar pitfall. All Leighton is going to help Bobrovsky with is how to be a 3rd string goalie that catches lightning in a bottle for half a season.

Leighton lost a lot of respect from me with this injury. From what I have heard he kept the injury from the team. I don’t think the Flyers need an expendable player with integrity issues. If he had told the team he was hurt before they signed him, I would say ditch Boosh. Seeing as he did hid it though I say dump Leighton.

His was different. He alleges that he kept telling himself that the headaches we because of “this or that.” Leighton held back the info to get his new contract. I still think Lappy should have let the team know sooner, but Lappy didn’t hide his injury for a contract.

How do you know Leighton held back his info because of a new contract? Could it have been that he just wants to play and be a starting GT for the first time in his career?
I don’t even like Leighton and was against the signing, but I don’t think there was anything malicious with regard to Leighton’s intent here.

I dont have an inside source. I’m just going off what was published. I’m not saying his back did not get worse during the per season, I’m saying it was bugging him the playoffs and offseason. He should have been working with the flyer the whole time letting them know what was happing. Here is a link to one of the articles that made me think he was not totally truthful with the flyers.

Do you honestly expect Michael Leighton to tell the team he’s injured and should not be signed?
Further, if you believe Holmgren, Leighton passed a physical and an MRI before he was signed. Why do you lose respect for a player looking for his first ever contract over a team that’s unable to tell he’s hurt?

It needs to be a two way street. Homer said he knew about the injury but also said Leighton needed to let the trainers know what was happing. I see why Leighton would hide the injury, but I still would have liked him to be strait with the team. Just because you have an injury does not mean you wont get a contract.
Leighton passed the physical for the contract. Since the flyers missed the injury they are a part to blame. Some of the fault must fall on them. In the end though only the player knows if they feel hurt or not. He should have been working with the trainers the whole time, or at least right after the contract was signed if you feel he was right to with hold info to get a contract.
by midwestflyers on Nov 2, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Leighton was working with the trainers after the contract.
I just don’t see how you lose a lot of respect for a guy who wants to play through an injury, does what the team asks of him, they sign him to a contract, and he works with the trainers throughout the summer. You want him to say “I’m hurt, I don’t trust your physical that nothing is wrong”?

If that is how it played out, no I don’t loose respect for him. What I was basing my comment on was the reports that made it sound like he hid the injury from the staff. Everything I have read though makes it sound as if he hid it from the team. I understand wanting to play through an injury, and I understand wanting his first real contract. My reaction could all just be the Flyers trying to make themselves look good and saying he hid the injury. (God knows they would never underplay an injury) If thats the case I need to be looking at the Flyers not at Leighton.
by midwestflyers on Nov 2, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions
The team is saying he hid the injury because he didn’t tell them his back hurt either in the playoffs or before he signed. But he got tested before the contract, so the team is saying he hid it due to the fact that he didn’t say “I have pain in my back.”
I guess I just don’t see what the team is trying to say. Do they want Leighton to disagree with their physical? Do they want him to say after he starts the most games in his career that his back hurts? What exactly does that say, even if he does?
Really, I think the team is spinning it, because I ask “Well, team, what would you have wanted Leighton to do?” That answer is either counter to any athlete – complain about every ache and pain; counter to his personal interest and unreasonable to expect – he’s looking for his first actual NHL contract; or tell the team their physicians are wrong – he shouldn’t have passed his physical.
If I can’t answer what the team wants from him – or why they should expect that – I don’t blame Leighton. Laperriere, however, the blame is a a lot more difficult to pin down. He was playing it tough, lying to himself and the team, but the team also let him play with a spot on his brain. So…

Question for you as a Parent of a little Flyers fan?
My daughter is only 17 months and doesn’t care about much besides Elmo and Blue’s Clues. I got her doing a funny dance while yelling score and giving out high fives after a goal. However clapping is contagious at this age and when the Pens scored on VS. she started clapping and smiling with the crowd. I kinda of yell at her and made her cry. I don’t care how old you are nobody cheers for Crosby in my house.
Does that make me a good or bad parent?
Very mixed emotions there I felt bad but I didn’t know what to do.
This makes you a good parent. There are far to few parents teaching their kids right from wrong. When we watch hockey in my house, my girls always ask “who is the bad team the Flyers play tonight?”

Good parenting! 17 months should know that by now! Hahah. I’m on the reverse side, I’m teaching my older sister to like hockey. She’s in it for the guys, though. She hasn’t cried yet
Its easier if you associate it with color, by the way. Children are orientated with color faster than words.
Let's do it again
Do you want the honest or funny answer?
Honestly, negative reinforcement rarely works—it fosters negative associations for sports. Try using more positive reinforcement for the Flyers only and ignoring what the other teams do. It was easy for me with my son because he is soooo into super heroes. Flyers are the “good guys” and everyone else is the “bad guy” and the Penguins are the super, super bad guy like “Dr. Doom”. He understood that. It’s hard to do with Elmo and Blue’s Clues because they don’t have bad guys.
