Around SBN: Troubled Yankees Join Troubled Red Sox In Last Place

Rather lengthy opinion article by a relatively unknown Leafs blogger (once linked to by Down Goes Brown, so he's legit) about why the League should do more to promote the Flyers. Well written, though it does hit the usual suspects of Flyers-are-goons-Richie's-a-bully-fans-booed-Santa-Claus...

It’s entertaining, I’ll give him that. But the stuff about the Flyers being the scourge of the league/lowest form of scum is BS. Plenty of other teams have cheap-shot artists so for him to say Richards is being hypocritical by calling out Subban is a stretch. He’s a good player who happens to be a captain and is entitled to his opinion.

And the fan stuff is tired. /yawn

Flyers fans booed the Canadian National Anthem? When?

Oh, it most certainly did happen when we played the Habs in 2008, but the Habs’ fans started it by booing the US Anthem—not that it makes it right, however.

I feel kind of guilty for enjoying every minute of reading that, but I thought it had a bit of satire running through it and I interpreted it as such. It helps that I knew it was coming from a Leafs fan, so I was able to keep that in the back of my mind. Sure some of the comparisons were tired, but I certainly agree with the early premise; that the NHL needs to market teams rather than certain individuals (or at least do some of both), and ours certainly has a compelling narrative.

Oh, totally. The NBA route of superstar promotion will not work in the NHL.

Plus, no one in the NHL will be taking their talents to South Beach any time soon.

Took it the same way. It was thoroughly enjoyable to read.

It was a good read, but he acts like other teams don’t get suspensions and have dirty hits. The Flyers just can’t shake the 70’s persona. It was then, this is now. They are an elite team no matter how you cut it. They pretty much always are and should be marketed because of that fact. If you want to then throw in how badass they are, cool. But they are always in the running because they’re just as elite as pitt, wash, and det. The only ones out of those four that have a long-lasting greatness(fanbase-wise) are the flyers and the red wings. They should be marketed because of that.

Some of it is tongue and cheek, and should be taken as such, to make his point IMO. I think you are taking it a little too personal.
