OT: Good Statistics Software
Hi folks,
Anyone know of any really good cheap or free stats software? I'm considering doing an NHL-related project (because I'm a nerd) based on the cap, points, and avg points per team. I have Excel but I'd rather not use Excel. I had a copy of STATA on my comp but it finally realized I graduated from college 5 years ago and it doesn't work anymore. So, if you want to help a fellow Flyers fan and amateur statistician out, please let me know where I can find a good stat program.
Thanks!
ETA: I found what I needed offline! Thanks for the replies, though!

What are you looking to do, certain programs/software work perfectly fine for some things but are horrible at others.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
I was primarily looking to plug in numbers and do a 2-tailed t-test then ANOVA but I got STATA to work.

Excel is ok for those things, the graphical output just looks like crap for the most part. Typically what I do for creating figures is use SigmaPlot. It’s damned expensive, but you can download a trial version for free (I think it lasts for a month). I know people who use STATA and love it, but I never have.

have you worked with command line stuff before? I recommend R if you have, or even if you haven’t and you think you could learn. It’s open source and has lots of diffrerent downloadable packages for doing different analyses. It has a pretty steep learning curve, so wouldn’t be ideal if you just want to plug numbers in.

Go to Beyond the Boxscore – as well as Behind the Net both are SB Nation stat geek sites. It’s just that baseball has been doing this for alot longer and if you go to Behind the Net, you’ll see that the blog lord has worked with baseball advanced metrics but be wary – he’s a fargin Giants fan. Although as someone as knowledgable as he is in sabermetrics damn well knows that Team Scrappy-Do has to have been one of the luckiest teams in recent World Series. Yeah, I’m still bitter.
I’m a Giants fan? I hate them with a passion. I left town so I wouldn’t have to see them and their fair-weather fans celebrate a World Series win.
What, you mean Brian Sabean didn’t build a fantastic team that performed as they should have, winning a World Series??
