One minute everyone is saying Boosh is going to be the one to go when Leighton comes back, and the next Boosh is the “hot” goalie (as described by ASF this time). We’re gonna be carrying 3 goalies all year, I think.
I have to agree with you.

Now, I don’t have much of an opinion, since the Flyers don’t really save money by sending Bob down.

by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 14, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions
haha, that would imply they are worried about having those bonuses be a cap penalty next year. And if that was true, they wouldn’t have put Lappy on LTIR.

Geoff I know you are unhappy about putting Lappy on IR and how that affects things and it certainly is not that idea situation. But Lappy is really hurt and this situation is not something the Flyers planned for at the start of the season. I certainly rather have Lappy in the lineup then anywhere else. Couple this with Bob’s unexpected rise to NHL All-Stardom now we a problem a problem. Neither of which could have been planned for at the start of the season.
Blame BOB!
If BOB sucked more we wouldn’t be forced into this cap position. Damn it BOB we planned on having cheap and average goaltending and you have to come along a ruin everything by playing so well. Frigging goaltending in Flyerdom is always a problem one way or another.
And yet you’re completely ignoring the fact that Matt Walker is really hurt and this is something the Flyers knew at the beginning of the season. Then, they go and get even MORE defensive depth, but refuse to make the smart move.
Bob is not the problem. It’s the mentality that Matt Walker on a surgically repaired hip is three times better than Bartulis, Syvret, and every other Phantom, and therefore the Flyers will risk a cap penalty next year to pay this guy to not play.

Holmgren’s ultimate plan: Bobrovsky at Center, Leighton on the Right and Boucher on the left. An entire line of goalies. Opponents won’t know how to defend it.

That while Down Goes Brown article is hilarious:
April 11, 2009 – The Flyers eliminate the Rangers from playoff contention on the season’s final day when Chris Pronger scores the winner on a move he calls “glue the puck to the front of a stolen zamboni and then run over Henrik Lundqvist while he’s taking a drink from his water bottle”.The ones about Kaberle and Jokinen were my favorites though.

I’ve come to the reluctant conclusion that I cannot hate the Leafs until they become playoff competition. Down here, I don’t get any of their fans anyway, so DGB’s sheer awesomeness easily overwhelms the non-existence of annoying Leafs fans in Florida.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Back during the perennial playoff matchups with the Leafs and Senators in the early Aughties, I actually found Senators fans more annoying than Leafs fans.

I’d rather ask when RAJ has some free time to come across the street and mentor Homer….
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 14, 2010 10:10 AM EST up reply actions
That has been a total team transformation across the street. It be like taking this Flyers team and making it all wingers as opposed to centers, dmen, and goalies.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
I realize that, I’m just being facetious. It’s just the juxtaposition of how RAJ is viewed vs how Homer is viewed.
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 14, 2010 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
RAJ doesn’t have a hard cap to manage though. If he doesn’t move Big Joe to someone they basically just increase their payroll as opposed to being screwed. If money wasn’t an issue both Homer and RAJ have went out and gotten key pieces that their respective teams needed (although not entirely for some spots)
If I didn’t love both teams, I’d find this a great chance for a trading places scenario.
RAJ would constantly need to be reminded that the salary cap is real and all of his trades violate it, while Homer sits nervously in his office waiting for someone to catch him because he violated the imaginary MLB cap.
Jeff Carter is better than Alex Ovechkin.
If you aquate Pitching To Goaltending RAJ trades would have been something like this.
Get Giguere at the deadline 09’
Trade Giguere for prospects 10’
Trade better prospects and JVR for Ryan Miller 10’
Trade Leighton and Prospects for Lunugo at deadling 10’
Let Carter walk as a free agent
Sign Giguere as free agent for 2011’
All while having stellar Bobrosky making peanuts on the roster to begin
We would have all the goalies just to prevent other teams for getting them.
And then Lavvy would ride whichever one’s hot for 82 games and you realize that it’s not quite the same as rotating pitchers.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Dec 14, 2010 8:46 PM EST up reply actions
I am thinking he’d work great on a line of his own. Really with his command he can squeeze a baseball in any hole in goal, I’m sure he could just do the same with a hockey puck. And nobody on the ice will touch him since he’s wearing a Phillies jersey they’ll just think it was a drunk fan on the ice.
Too bad my idea will only work once… but it could be a clutch goal that we’d need!

Or they just raise ticket prices 5 bucks. There is no cap and they are swimming in money with the new stadium and selling out every game.
They already did that. They can’t sell out any more than they already did last year. The money has to come from somewhere and they don’t have their own network like the NYY or Red Sox. There are limits regardless of a lack of a salary cap. And thank God there isn’t one in baseball!

I agree. If you send Bob down he might get the feeling he has to be perfect in that league since it’s such a drop in talent. Plus the Phantoms don’t exactly have the team to put in front of him if you want him gaining confidence and a knowledge of the game. Even his ridiculously fast reflexes can’t save him from the horror of ADK.

Yeah, it’s a disaster down there anyway, we don’t have to subject Bob to that. All of the goalies have horrific numbers, so it’s hard to figure out how bad they’re really playing without watching the games. If we keep Bob here, he gets to keep working with Reese and he’s probably better off in the long run.

Perfect in this league? And then he can watch videos of Kovachuck’s penalty shot, or the final goal of the SCF last year, laugh and not worry about it.
And if I remember correctly, his team in Russia was pretty bad too. He may just feel more at home. .

That’s not to say I don’t want him back later… I do.
I just want him to work on those aspects of his game which need improvement. Where better to do that then The Phantoms, where he’ll face 50 shots a night?

I’m sympathetic to the argument, I just don’t know how much it will improve his game.
On a team that is as poor defensively as the Phantoms, why would Bob stop being the athletic goalie and become more of an angle and percentages goalie? If anything, he’ll be forced to make athletic saves even more because of the team in front of him.

I guess it depends though. Frankly, when I’ve tried to explain LTIR and the cap to the people in my section at the Flyers game, if their eyes glaze over, I just end up giving up on it and say it doesn’t count against the cap while they are on LTIR. So hopefully his reasoning is that he is capped on Twitter as far as characters in order to explain, or he is lazy, or he might not actually know.

I can see if he doesn’t care to explain why it’s a problem – that part is difficult – but it’s not hard to say “You can go over by that amount” instead of “it takes the amount off the cap”.

A few headlines from Penguin land...
Chris Kunitz missed practice yesterday but it looks like one of Bylsma’s maintenance days and he should be ready to go.
Malkin also practiced on the Crosby line yesterday but there’s all sorts of conflicting reports that he will play/will not play and I have a feeling if he does, it would be used only situationally, like PP only, not near his usual 20+ minutes.
Has definitely been a role-reversal of sorts this year, you’re almost always the ones leading the league in PIMs, but it’s us this time around leading the league in fighting majors. Too bad Shelley is suspended, so we probably won’t see the Godfather tonight but Engelland will be in for good measure.
This will be Asham’s first game back in Philly, what’s his reception going to be?
By all indications MAF should get his 15th start in 16 games tonight.
Good luck fellas and let the battle for the Atlantic commence!

To be fair, the Pirates are finally doing a rebuild properly. No sense in acquiring (well, trying to acquire) big name, expensive players when there isn’t a team already constructed. And this year should be another step in the process for them. Alvarez, Walker, McCutchen, and Tabata should continue to improve, now you just need pitching prospects.

I’m not saying we go after big names, there’s no point like you said. But we definitely could have got J.J. Hardy if they offered the right pieces and we also lost out on De La Rosa. But there is a lot of optimism around El Toro, Walker, Cutch and Tabata, now we just need a few complimentary guys.

Fair enough. I admittedly don’t know much about the Pirates, but that’s still probably more than most people. I have no idea whether they have pitching prospects or not, just that they need pitching prospects to start pitching well for them.
I like De La Rosa, but Hardy is nothing to miss.

I don’t blame you. Some people don’t even realize Pittsburgh still has a baseball team.
We liked JDLR too but apparently not enough to pay him, which should probably be Bob Nutting’s motto. But when your starting SS is Ronny Cedeno, Hardy looks pretty good, especially at the price Baltimore got him for.

haha, I had no idea it was Ronny Cedeno. I think Eric Bruntlett is better than him…

Asham: He’ll get a good reception. I think everyone respected him, and it’s not like he chose to pursue free agency. Then the game will start.
Fighting: I think the middleweights will more than make up for Shelley’s absence. Carcillo is certain to throw, and I think we’ll probably end up running Cooke a few times until he drops em, too.
Crosby: There is absolutely no way his point streak comes to an end tonight. Bastards is a lock to pot at least one against us.
I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. I’ll be interested to see if he throws down tho, there’s plenty of middleweights on each team.
I’d probably put the over/under fights at 4. Engelland and Rupp are normally good for one, then Cookie possibly and some other random one.
Sid’s point streak almost ended against Buffalo. They did everything humanly possible to lock him down and it ultimately killed them because they completely forgot there were 17 other Penguin skaters on the ice.

Sorry… yes, I caught it on Twitter when I was following the Cliff Lee saga last night. It’s pretty funny, and as Puck Daddy said, what’s worse is that they didn’t fix it by the time they showed the answer.

I liked the PD commenter who said
“Gretzky averaged just 0.71 games/game, while Crosby has been holding strong at 1 game/game for his whole career. That should settle the debate.”
If someone wanted to do it, I’m sure they’d get a discussion going.
You can always do an as a Penguin segment here, I’d be happy to answer crap

Well, that would only work if you’re an actual member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Or a former member.
Please tell me you’re not Tony Tanti.

Nope, just a fan. Sorry to disappoint. Although I have met the ol 29er a couple times

I see. The “Ask A Flyer” segment was one of the Flyers’ beat writers asking our questions to certain members of the Flyers, and videotaping the interview.
Even though Phil Bourque was a Penguin, I did enjoy watching him play. He seemed to enjoy the game a lot. Unfortunately for me, I was at this game, which he won for you guys.
Fortunately, I also got to go to this game.

I got your meaning wrong
We used to do a thing where a member of Pensburgh goes to the opposing site and answers some questions, so that’s what I was talking about.
But your version sounds cool too, I’d like to have something like that.

We’ve done that too… or, I should say, Travis has done it.
The “Ask A Flyer” thing was new this year and it was cool. Hopefully it comes back.

I remember that, before each game it was like “5 questions for Pensburgh” or something.

If I remember right we’ve occasionally had prospects and draft picks come on but nobody of any particular significance.
But either way, you can ask the Pens fan whatever, I’ll try to answer to the best of my abilities. While we’re at it, who’s getting the start for the Flyers today, is it Boucher or Bob?

Boosh, according to all the beat writers this morning (and they were reporting that yesterday, too).

Right, i was wondering what happened with Carcillo. I know we submitted questions way back then, and then it didnt’ come since they were on a road trip. I forgot about it, but now I want it BACK!

So RAJ for Flyers GM?
I think he is smug enough that he might just try it, just so he can prove that he can do it.
BOILER UP!! 2010-2011
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
He was the Flyers GM, his name was Bobby Clarke.
Neither were great talent evaluator but had strong scouting staffs.
Both handed out awful contracts like candy.
Neither believed in long-term planning and were VERY reactive.
Both had some utterly awful trades (giving Cliff Lee away, the Gratton trade, the AWFUL Falloon trade, the Lindros trade)
But they also had some outright brilliant moves (trading for Leclair/Recchi, the Langkow trade, the Kapanen deal, the Oswalt trade, the first Lee trade).
And when in doubt, they could throw money at the problem (Roenick, Lee).
The only thing missing is the accent and juvenile diabetes. I really think they’re the same person.
Jeff Carter is better than Alex Ovechkin.
I was thinking the other trade – we gave up a ton for Lindros:
Peter Forsberg
Steve Duchesne
Kerry Huffman
Mike Ricci
Ron Hextall
Chris Simon
1993 RD1 pick (#10 overall Jocelyn Thibault – other available players with that pick included Saku Koivu and Jamie Langenbrunner)
1994 RD1 pick (#10 overal Nolan Baumgartner – other available players included Mattias Ohlund, Patrik Elias, and Ethan Moreau)
$15 million dollars
Honor is no substitute for victory.
It always hurts seeing that, especially considering Thibault was a centerpiece for the Roy trade. But that was Russ Farwell still.
Jeff Carter is better than Alex Ovechkin.
I tend to feel hurt seeing the name Peter Forsberg on the top of that list. Especially because no-one knew how good he would be. Having prime Lindros and prime Foppa center your top two lines…how amazing would that be?
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Bobby Clarke was a really good hockey player; RAJ was a 4th outfielder. I think it’s still too early to declare first Lee trade a failure. It’s possible, but not certain yet.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
I, and Baseball America, would beg to differ. Those three prospects are absolute garbage. I’d bet you an autographer Mike Richards jersey against an autographed Riley Cote puck that none of those three will ever become useful contributors for the Phillies.
Jeff Carter is better than Alex Ovechkin.
Define “useful contributor” – are we talking regular starter or defensive replacement/pinch hitter for the replacement guys, and starter, reliever, closer, and/or LOOGY for the pitchers?
Honor is no substitute for victory.
